Thomas Waterhouse, Highfield, Holywell, North Wales. Huw T. Edwards's resignation from Flintshire County Council and his other public offices in North Wales has come as a great shock to all his friends in the county and throughout Wales. Cannot understands why he has taken this dramatic step. They have always regarded Huw T. Edwards as a 'man of vision', but he is now becoming almost a visionary. Huw T. Edwards was appointed to the chair of the Education Committee on his personal merit and because of his forty years service as a member of Flintshire County Council. Appreciates Huw T. Edwards's kindness to the writer and to members of his family.

Edwards did not wish to continue his membership of the National Assistance Board after the end of the year. Will convey Huw T. Edwards's wishes to the Prime Minister. Was glad that Huw T. Edwards's term of office as a member of the National Assistance Board comes to an end at the close of the year, the writer enquires whether he may submit his name to the Prime Minister for a further three year term of office. Tom [Davies], BBC, Cardiff to EIC [Davies]. Does not like to see the recipient appearing on Granada's Welsh programmes as he broadcasts regularly on Maes Chwarae. The BBC has no legal right on the recipient, but they live in a highly competitive world, and there is no doubt that the BBC gave the recipient the opportunity to become one of the most prominent broadcasters on rugby in Welsh. The writer sees no reason why a commercial company should be allowed to profit from their work. The writer's sole objection is that the recipient appears on the two channels at more or less the same time. Feels that the recipient has to make a choice - the one or the other. Realises that the recipient can travel to Manchester only during the school vacations, but there is nothing to prevent him from coming to Cardiff to one of the TWW programmes. Although they have no legal right on the recipient, there are other rights, and he asks the recipient simply to make a choice. As the recipient has already appeared on Dewch i Mewn, it means that he cannot be invited to appear on Beunydd. Welsh.

Tom Henshaw as in A1/48. Would like the Advisory Council to take up the matter of rent from the RAF as indicated in the enclosed correspondence. Lady Megan Lloyd George, MP, did take up the matter, but made little progress. Has heard nothing further from the Superintending Engineer.

Hopes that something can be done about 'these military people' who 'seem to glory in trampling us down'. Does not wish to speak out publicly as he rejoices in the existence of a Labour Government. Tom Hooson, 25A Norfolk Crescent, London W2. Was very sorry to read the news in The Times. Does not always agree with Huw T. Edwards, but the Council has lost 'a decisive - if provocative! - leader'. Hopes that henceforth Huw T. Edwards will have more time to devote to the Welsh Tourist Board and Y Faner.

Has investigated the persistent allegations of extensive staff discontent, and has discovered simply that there is a vendetta against the manager, Mr Charman, by three people. Most of the staff are quite happy with Mr Charman, and appreciate that the new company is paying union rates of pay to all staff. Discusses the problems which existed with the organisation of the office staff. Has offered a new appointment to Mr Emrys Roberts who was dismissed by the Company in the previous January, but he preferred to accept an appointment elsewhere. The complaints of Miss Ellis. Encloses a copy of the memorandum (A1/332a) which he has prepared for the editorial committee on the question of the resignation of Dr Kate Roberts which he regards as 'light relief from these important frictions': 'My knowledge of Gwilym R. Jones convinces me that we can safely leave him to deal with the weekly grievances of this valuable prima donna!'. Would like to discuss these matters with Huw T. Edwards. Believes that the discontent at the press is 'merely a wild allegation of the three people whose cases I have discussed'. Thinks that the manager should be trained in improved personnel management. The new paper is to begin within five months; hopes that it will generate enough money to strengthen the whole of Gwasg Gee.

Edwards's book 'The History of the Union in North Wales'. The proposed funding of the publication of the book. An objection has been raised by Arthur Deakin [the general secretary of the TGWU] to the use of local funds for this purpose. The authority of the General Executive Council may be required. Urged Deakin to allow the Union to be responsible for the publication of Huw T. Edwards's work.

Edwards is prepared to serve on the Council of Management of the Welsh Land Settlement Society. Feels sure that the appointment of Huw T. If it is intended that the letter should come before the Council for Wales and Monmouthshire, it is important for Bala UDC to define what it means when it refers to self-government, Welsh National Business and Local Business coming under the control of Local Authorities. Passing resolutions alone is no longer sufficient, and there is a need to explain in detail the meaning of terms that are in common usage and are still interpreted in different ways by various individuals and authorities.

Tudor E. Watkins, MP, Bronafon, Penyfan Road, Brecon. Was disappointed not to see Huw T. Edwards at Colwyn Bay the previous week. Has enjoyed a rest at home. Congratulations upon the Report which will much encourage the rural communities. Has written to some of his colleagues to urge support for the report from the Labour side. The Education Committee agreed that copies should be circulated to all the schools in the county. Percy Morris says that there is a possibility of a debate on 30 [July]. TEW is most anxious to open the debate. Could Huw T. Edwards give him any advice or suggestions? Clement Davies does not like the Report, perhaps because it underlines his own inactivity.
