[T.] Mervyn [Jones], Wales Gas Board, 2 Windsor Place, Cardiff. Does not see that Huw T. Edwards's decision to change his political allegiance should in any way affect his membership of the Wales Gas Board. But the Minister, of course, reserves the right to decide in these matters, and the writer will make informal enquiries to decide whether Huw T. Edwards should send a similar letter direct to the Minister. Feels that Huw T. Edwards's letter typifies his 'open-hearted honesty'. For this reason, a letter to the Minister on similar lines would be appropriate.

[T.] Mervyn [Jones], Wales Gas Board, Snelling House, Bute Terrace, Cardiff. Wishes to thank Huw T. Edwards for everything he did for the Wales Gas Board during this the first week of his retirement. 'The depth of your affection, as the height of your enthusiasm, for the Board and all it stands for, was throughout, for it, as for us all, a glorious asset'. Appreciates that the Board was often forced to share Huw T. Edwards's precious time with a great many competing demands. But Huw T. Edwards's loving loyalty was never in any doubt at all. His sensitive kindness to the writer was always especially appreciated. Huw T. Edwards will always be most welcome in future at the congregations of the Wales Gas Board. He is invited to the Cross Foxes, Overton-on-Dee for the evening of Wednesday, 18 September for an informal dinner party. Also wishes to pay tribute to Huw T. Edwards's wife and family. For reply see A2/148.

Edwards to discuss some of the people referred to in the book. Welsh.

T. S. Norton, Secretary and Public Relations Officer of the Wales and Monmouthshire Sunday Opening Council, 7-9 Caroline Street, Bridgend. Wish to congratulate Huw T. Edwards on his resignation as Chairman of the Council for Wales and Monmouthshire. They were grateful to Huw T. Edwards the previous December for his support for the campaign for the Sunday opening of licensed premises. They feel that they are receiving 'a raw deal' from the Government which is refusing to consider the problem. They believe that the 1881 Sunday Closing Act is 'hopelessly out of date and should be repealed'.

T. Vernon Jones, Ardwyn, Ffordd Seiriol, Penmaenmawr, Caernarfonshire. Many thanks for Tros y Tresi. Admires Huw T. Edwards greatly, although he has not always agreed with him on political matters. Enjoyed reading the book very much, and knew some of the characters. Has found the course of Huw T. Edwards's life an inspiration to him, as it will be to a number of young Welsh people. The writer recently heard the story of Huw T. Edwards's election to the Penmaenmawr Council for the first time. Welsh.

T. Wynne Thomas, Chairman of the Sub-Commissioners of Pilotage for the Dyfi (Dovey) District, Trinity House Pilotage Service, Trinity Port of Aberdyfi, Meirion. As he has read in the press that Huw T. Edwards is taking an avid interest in the smaller ports situated on the coast, he sends on a copy of his survey of the one Trinity Port in Cardigan Bay. Hopes that it will be of some value to the sub-committee appointed by the Council for Wales.
