Letter from Tho. Hayward from Llanidloes, to Viscount Clive,

Is writing on behalf of Mr Marsh, who left for Pool yesterday and has not yet returned. Peace prevails in the town. The arrival of the soldiers from Brecon is eagerly awaited. No general meetings have been held by the rioters since Tuesday (30th ult.). The mob did not wreck the cellar of the Trewythen Arms Hotel, as alleged in the Press. The soldiers will be quartered in the New Hall.

Letter from [Lord] J[ohn] Russell from Whitehall, to Viscount Clive,

Is a little uneasy at the notion of calling in the troops from Brecon. Will send copies of the proclamation, and suggests that a number of Welsh ones be displayed. MB1/71. 1839, May 4. Letter from [Lord] J[ohn] Russell from Whitehall, to Viscount Clive, MP. Suggests that warrants be issued for a search for weapons among the rioters, and offers a reward of £100 for evidence leading to the conviction of those who rescued the prisoners.

Letter from John Loxdale from the Clerk of the Peace's Office, Shrewsbury, to Viscount Clive, MP,

It is rumoured that some of the Llanidloes rioters are on their way to Shrewsbury. Their number includes one of the escaped prisoners. Should he appear in the town, he will be immediately imprisoned. As there are about 1,000 Chartists in Shrewsbury, he has thought it wise to protect the prison against a possible attack.

Letter from John Watton from St John's Hill, to Viscount Clive,

Has received a letter from Newtown relating to the Llanidloes riot. The writer is of the highest respectability and strictest veracity, but he is pledged to withhold his name. As his Lordship's cavalry have been ordered to advance towards Llanidloes, he feels it his duty to quote the following extracts, - 'Depend upon it no man will be taken at Llanidloes without bloodshed. I know the disposition of these men; they will fight to the last drop of blood, and the women are worse than the men. Neither your Cavalry nor ours can do any good, unless aided by regulars. They have guns and pistols, ammunitíon and pikes'.
