Nelson Mandela,

Material relating to Nelson Mandela, covering his early life and imprisonment in South Africa through to his role as Deputy Leader, and then President, of the African National Congress (ANC). File comprises leaflets, copies of speeches, newsletters, copies of public statements, news cuttings, a printed history of the trial leading to his imprisonment in 1964, the Order of Ceremony for the Honorary Freeman of the Borough of Islwyn, 1986, and 70th birthday tribute at Wembley, 1988.

Political prisoners and detainees,

Material relating to Anti-Apartheid Movement (AAM) campaigns for the release of political prisoners in South Africa including Walter Sisulu, the Sharpville 6, the Pretoria Twelve, the Moroka Three and James Mange amongst others. File comprises press cuttings, reports, press statements, circulars, copies of a letters written by various prisoners (including Ahmed Kathrada, from his cell in Robben Island Prison), a typescript copy of "Operation Mayibuye," SATIS publications, and letters and briefings from the ANC. Also Amnesty International reports concerning apartheid imprisonment and execution.

Southern Africa - the imprisoned society,

Southern Africa - the Imprisoned Society (SATIS) papers relating to their work on behalf of the peoples of Southern Africa and the political prisoners detained in South Africa. Material includes papers relating to the 'Emergency Campaign' against repression in South Africa and Namibia, copies of printed documents and memoranda.

Other campaigns and events,

Material relating to Wales Anti-Apartheid Movement (WAAM) activities in support of a variety of international, and national, campaigns against apartheid South Africa. Also material relating to events organised at a local level such as sponsored walks, boycotts of local shops and businesses, concerts, protests and rallies.

Apartheid and health,

AAM Health Committee papers relating to campaign work regarding the reality of health care under apartheid, and the need for better health care in South Africa. Material includes reports and papers, AAM and WAAM appeal leaflets, and draft articles.

Open letter campaign,

A briefing and flyer on the Anti-Apartheid Movement "Open Letter to John Major" campaign. The purpose of the campaign was to exert pressure via local MPs on the British government, so that they would take action to encourage the South African regime to enter into negotiations regarding a Constituent Assembly and Interim Government.

Solidarity with Namibia,

Anti-Apartheid Movement briefing paper on the campaign against British collaboration with South Africa's occupation of Namibia. Also a UN conference information kit "For Self-determination and Genuine National Independence for Namibia" comprising reports, flyers and printed material relating to political and social developments in Namibia, and a copy of the constitution of the South West Africa People's Organisation (SWAPO) of Namibia.

South Africa Freedom Day,

Material relating to the "South Africa Freedom Day Concert on the Square", held at Trafalgar Square 29 April 2001, comprising a programme of events and a copy of the invitation from the African High Commission.

Soweto walk,

Material relating to the Wales Anti-Apartheid Movement (WAAM) annual fundraising event, the "Soweto Walk", comprising sponsorship forms and covering letters, news cuttings, letters and circulars outlining arrangements for individual events.

Strike at Dunnes stores,

Material relating to WAAM support for workers of Dunnes Stores (Dublin), on strike in support of colleagues suspended for refusing to handle South African goods. Includes letters, press cuttings and a copy of AAM Boycott Special, December 1984.

Time to act,

AAM briefing documents relating to the launch of a national campaign "Southern Africa: The Time to Act" which called for a fundamental change in British policy towards Southern Africa. Also a WAAM conference programme and flyers, 'Apartheid - Time to Act', 1990.

Twinning with ANC regions,

Briefing papers, circulars, printed material and some letters relating to the campaign to twin regions of the AAM with regions of the ANC. The campaign to twin the Wales Anti-Apartheid Movement (WAAM) Region with the African National Congress (ANC) Western Cape Region was continued by Action For Southern Africa (ACTSA) following the dissolution of WAAM.

UK election campaigns,

Material relating to the AAM's campaign to seek support for their "Manifesto for Sanctions" proposals by General Election candidates in the 1987 and 1992 UK General Elections, in opposition to the current government policy on sanctions against South Africa. File includes copies of letters, the AAM Manifesto, briefing papers and campaign documents.

WAAM rallies,

Material relating to the organisation of Wales Anti-Apartheid Movement rallies and demonstrations in Cardiff including correspondence, applications to local authorities, instructions for participants, and publicity material.

War on want,

Papers of meetings of the War on Want (WoW) Cymru Committee including agenda, minutes, circular letters and notices, and a copy of the WoW constitution. Also copies of press cuttings, campaign handbook, reports, and some printed matter relating to the work of WoW Cymru.

Whites-only referendum,

Material relating to the Anti-Apartheid Movement (AAM) campaign to promote action in Britain - and internationally - to help ensure that the whites-only referendum did not impede the negotiating process regarding non-racial democracy in South Africa. File includes statements by the AAM, UK politicians, church organisations, and the ANC. In addition, there is a formal campaign plan, an outline of activities, press releases and press launch packs.
