Relates of his journey to Czechoslovakia via Germany. Describes the Rhineland, Frankfurt, Nuremburg, Bayreuth, Eger, Marienbad and Prague. 'Every bit of land [in Northern Bavaria] was cultivated ... - It was a veritable land of plenty - tho it was all primitive farming ... every other cottage with the Red Swastika flag flying - there is no doubting Hitler's grip here'.

Describes the scenery on the journey from Perpignan to Barcelona. Has received a 'splendid reception'. 'Everyone seems cheered up by the victory at Teruel'. Gives travelling plans and gives names of the members of the delegation. Hopes to meet the 'PM'. 'Life goes on here quite cheerfully they are marvellously plucky and in good spirit' .

His travelling plans mean that he cannot preside over the Festival on the 23rd. Has visited munition factories. 'They have had an awful struggle to build up their own industry and are now getting on top of the job. He can see at a glance how Non Intervention has hit them'. Describes Barcelona. People are 'composed' and 'very brave' and have given him a fine reception. 'They attach considerable importance to our British attitude particularly at the Non Intervention Committee'. (Continues letter at 6 p.m. Saturday evening) Barcelona bombed and has seen the results: 'I will not write about it'. Has seen the International Brigade, - '... a new kind of Foreign Legion'.

Describes the scenery on the journey from Barcelona to Valencia. 'War has really transformed this easygoing Nation into a serious sombre people'. Bullfighting is prohibited, football is catching on as a substitute. Has visited a convalescent home and is to inspect a 'Refugis' (refugee camp) and the 'protective measures' taken in Valencia.
