Typescript

The file comprises three similar typescript drafts of the text published in this volume as 'The Dying Gaul'. There are also four manuscript pages in David Jones' hand, and four photocopies of manuscript pages, and notes by René Hague.

Manuscript

The file comprises manuscript drafts of different versions of the Mass poem, with notes by René Hague and Harman Grisewood. They are arranged in the following order: manuscript draft for typing (numbered 108-119) with a copy of The Kensington Mass published by Agenda Editions in 1975 annotated by René Hague, and typescript and proofs for Agenda corrected by David Jones; manuscript draft of the beginning of the Kensington Mass (numbered 120-122); manuscript draft of the Kensington Mass (numbered 123-154); draft letter by David Jones discussing the Mass poem (numbered 155-156); manuscript draft of the Kensington Mass and the BBC Mass (numbered 156-165); manuscript draft of the BBC Mass (numbered 166-180); manuscript draft which is the source of the Kensington Mass (numbered 181-234); and manuscript notes for a poem callled 'The Mass' which is not the Kensington Mass (numbered 235-241).

Manuscript

The file comprises manuscript drafts of the Mass poem, with notes by René Hague. They are arranged in the following order: manuscripts reproduced as facsimiles A-O in The Kensington Mass by Agenda Editions in 1975 (numbered 242-255); manuscripts and photocopies of manuscripts of the Mass and the Kensington Mass continuation (numbered 256-277, 278-282, 283-289, 290-319, 320-324).

Typescript

The file comprises carbon typescript copies of the 'Old Quarry MS A' pages 1-103 (with gaps), 'The Old Quarry. Two' pages 1-33, and two copies of 'The Old Quarry : I' pages 2-22, with also notes by René Hague.

The Agent

The series comprises manuscript and typescript drafts of 'The Agent'.
David Jones writes about 'The Agent' in a letter to Harman Grisewood in 1962, stating that he is trying to 're-write a thing I did in 1940 (or thereabouts) about a conversation between Judas and Caiaphas'.

The Book of Balaam's Ass

The series comprises manuscript and typescript drafts of 'The Book of Balaam's Ass'.
Part of Balaam's Ass was printed in The Sleeping Lord. David Jones began working on 'Balaam's Ass' before In Parenthesis was ready for the press, but he abandoned the project.

Other literary papers

The group contains manuscript and typescript drafts of other writings by David Jones, including writing on the subject of 'Wales and Religion', research notes kept by David Jones, and material relating to literature by David Jones.

Catholic Mass in Bangor

The file comprises manuscript drafts of a writing by David Jones arising from a report that the Catholics of Bangor, co. Caernarfon, had been preparing for the change from Latin to English of parts of Low Mass (1964). For earlier drafts of this writing see CF2/3. Folio 23 is dated 'Harrow, March 1966'.

Art and Democracy / Anathemata

The file comprises Harman Grisewood's copy of The Changing World, No.1, Summer 1947 which contains 'Art and Democracy' by David Jones with manuscript amendments by him; and also a proof copy of Harman Grisewood's review of The Anathemata which appeared in The Dublin Review, pages 80-85.

Correspondence

David Jones was a prolific letter writer, and his correspondents were multifarious. He was part of a circle of young Catholic intellectuals, and was connected with artistic and literary circles, as well as a more aristocratic circle. He would often write many drafts of a letter before completing it, especially when writing to the press or to a scholar or critic. The correspondence deals with matters relating to religion, art, literature, history, Wales and more personal matters. -- The group comprises letters to David Jones from friends, acquaintances, publishers and art galleries; drafts letters from David Jones to friends, draft letters to the editors of newspapers; and copies of letters published in Dai Greatcoat : a self-portrait of David Jones in his letters, edited by René Hague.

Clarissa Eden

The file comprises fifteen letters and a telegram from Clarissa Eden, Lady Avon, 1948-1966, mostly 1956-1958, with a sketch by David Jones for an inscription for her, some newspaper cuttings with photographs of her, and a draft letter to her from David Jones, 1956.

Saunders Lewis

The file comprises forty letters from Saunders Lewis to David Jones, relating to David Jones' literature, broadcasts, and art exhibitions, and to Saunders Lewis's plays, Tynged yr Iaith and to his incarceration. There are two letters from Margaret, Saunders Lewis' wife (ff. 2-3), and a letter from Thomas Charles Edwards, 1937 (f. 1).
