Pedigrees and letters,

A volume containing pedigrees transcribed by J. H. Davies mainly from the Golden Grove Book of Pedigrees, L1659-L1675, followed by a number of holograph letters, etc., the details of which are as follows: Samuel Roberts ['S. R.'], Conway to the Reverend D. Silvan Evans, 1882 (1) (an appeal - some friends are moving to reward the writer for his pioneer efforts to obtain Postal Reforms), J[oseph] Harris ['Gomer'], editor, Swansea to the Reverend Walter Davies, rector of Manavon, 1819 (1) (requesting a few communications for Seren Gomer), lines of verse in the autograph of John Ceiriog Hughes beginning 'Roedd Prydydd yn eistedd ei [sic] wrth ochor y tan ...', a (?) 'hir a thoddaid' and an 'englyn' by Ceiriog in memory of [Ebenezer Thomas] 'Eben Fardd', and a letter from J. C[eiriog] Hughes, Caersws to W. A. Swettenham, 1879 (permanent way materials on hand and wanted), a letter (incomplete) from [Robert John Pryse ('Gweirydd ap Rhys')], Bangor to an unnamed correspondent, [18]78 (the addressee's request to have his letters returned), A. J. Johnes, Garthmyl, Welshpool to the Reverend R. Richards, Caerwys, 1836 (1) (the writer has recently been attacked for inaccuracy by the Dean of St Asaph - a request for information), H. Jones, Dinas and Pen rhiw'r kiln [i.e. Hugh Jones, Maesglasau] to the Reverend Mr Richards, Darowen, 1816-17 (2) (the writer's unhappy state and condition), W[illia]m Owen Pughe, London to Mr Ed. Jones, Minffordd Cottage, Tal y Llyn, 1812 (1) (is glad to hear the addressee has succeeded in procuring a boat for Llyn Cau) and to the Reverend Mr Richards, Llannevydd, 1819 (1) (arrangements for the Eisteddfod at Denbigh on October 6), and writing from Segrwyd, Denbigh to Miss [?A. Lloyd (erased)], 1827 (1) (replying to the addressee's letter), David Thomas ['Dafydd Ddu Eryri'] D..., date wanting, to the Reverend John Jones, Rectory, Llanllyfni (damaged) (requesting the immediate return of John Owen of Ceidio's elegy composed and written by Goronwy Owen which the addressee has lent to Mr Richards of Llansilin, with a note from John Jones to the Reverend D. Richards), four bidding letters (David Lloyd and Gwen Saunders, Lampeter, 1807, Richard Dodd and Elizabeth Richards, Carmarthen, 1827, with a specimen of the handwriting of Alcwyn Caryni Evans when he was six years old, 1835, William Lewis and Eliza Thomas, Carmarthen, 1840, and Thomas Thomas and Eliza Evans, Carmarthen, 1848), A. Heber, place and year not given, to her Aunt Cotton (a farewell message on quitting England), and 'The Peteggree of Cernioge' in the autograph of David Jones, Trefriw, written on the back of a broadside (Trefriw, Argraphwyd gan Dafydd Jones) relating to stray sheep and beginning 'Mae Mr Lloyd o Hafodunos ...'.

Penillion, etc.,

A composite manuscript in the hand of D. Silvan Evans containing 'Penillion', numbered 83-93, being a continuation of the series ending on page 111 of Ysten Sioned (Aberystwyth, 1882), and inscribed 'sent off to 89 (inclusive) Dec. 4, 1883' (no. 93 taken from the Oswestry Advertizer, 29 November 1882), together with one additional unnumbered stanza ('The two last line [sic] by D. S. E.'); some Welsh dictionary material, in the form of 'cywydd' couplets and other quotations, illustrating the use of words beginning mainly with the letter C ; and transcripts of free metre poetry by Dafydd o'r Nant and Syr Huw Dafydd ('O Gelli Gaer').

A notebook in the hand of D. Silvan Evans containing a list of eighteenth century Welsh printed books 'Had from Myrddin Fardd, July 1, 1881'; a few glossary words; and brief notes on some Carmarthenshie and Cardiganshire river names. There are also some Latin exercises (Nos. [33]-40), presumably in the hand of the original owner of the volume.

A scrap-book of D. Silvan Evans chiefly containing 'Nugae Canorae', being holographs and press cuttings of Welsh poetry by D. Silvan Evans and of Welsh translations by him of poetry by [Johann Wolfgang Von] Goethe, Anacreon, Sappho, Plato, etc.; press cuttings of reviews, 1887-97, of parts of D. Silvan Evans, Dictionary of the Welsh Language ... Geiriadur Cymraeg (Carmarthen, 1887-96); copious holographs and press cuttings by D. Silvan Evans of family memoranda (entries of births, baptisms, marriages and deaths, press cuttings of obituary notices, etc.); holograph letters to D. Telyn y Cyssegr,

A volume entitled 'Telyn y Cyssegr. 1851', being a collection of hymns and religious poems, including translations, by D. Silvan Evans. Many of the compositions were published in D. Silvan Evans: Telyn Dyfi (Aberystwyth, 1898).

A composite volume largely in the hand of D. Silvan Evans containing transcripts of 'cywyddau' and 'awdlau' by Guto'r Glyn, Gutyn Owain, Sion Tudur, Dafydd ap Gwilim, John Rhydderch ('or Amwythig'), Tudur Aled, Lewys Môn, Owain Gwynedd and Wiliam Lleyn; 'Cedymdeithyas Amlyn ac Amic' (from the Red Book of Hergest), with notes and extracts on 'The Legend of the two faithful Brothers', 'englynion', etc. by [Walter Davies] ('Gwallter Mechain'), Hugh Evan ('Hywel o Eryri'), Rowland Hugh ('o'r Graienyn, Bala') and [John Jones] ('Tegid'), occasioned partly by bardic controversies at eisteddfodau held at Corwen and Bala in 1789 (extracted partly from a manuscript of Rowland Hugh); 'Ystoria Charles' (from the Red Book of Hergest); 'Cân am Orthrymderau'r Cymry' by Siencin Lygad Rhawlin (c. 1695) (transcribed 24 June, 1880, from Llanover MS[c]40 i.e. NLW MS 13127, pp. 399-401, and printed in Y Genhinen, 1883, pp 135-6); 'Marwnad y Tri Morwr o Aberporth -- ' by Evan Thomas Rhys; 'Hen ddywediadau neu ddiarhebion Cymreig'; an English translation by Walter Davies ('Gwallter Mechain') of 'Canu i Ddewi' by Gwynfardd Brycheiniog; etc. The spine is lettered 'Gwaith G. An incomplete annotated transcript by Daniel Silvan Evans of 'Ystoria de Carolo Magno' from a transcript made by Ll[ywarch] Reynolds, Jesus College, Oxford, June 16, 1870, from the Red Book of Hergest (Jesus College MS 1, col. 381 ff.). The present text corresponds to Stephen J. Williams: Ystorya de Carolo Magno (Caerdydd, 1930), pp. 1-31.
