I have been involved in the management of Azimabad Kothi for some time. I will be travelling to Chandi to conduct some business and on my way there I will be visiting Azimabad. With your approval I intend to leave for Murshidabad in the month of Rabi` I and after staying there for a few days I intend to march towards Chandi. As I regard you as my friend I am informing you about my travel arrangements in advance. I will be leaving behind my family members in my Haveli near the garden in Charchara. My intention is to go to Azimabad from Murshidabad. I request you to inform Mr Amit so that he is aware about my visit. He should also inform his associate Babu Suda Shiv so that he could look after the household affairs about my visit.

Envelope bears only one word: 'Ingrizi' [i.e. translated into] English).

Text of letter gives date as Friday the 20th of the Bangla month of Katak [i.e. 11th November 1757?].

I had received a letter from Divan Nand Kumar reminding me to send the money for the wages of the East India Company to Calcutta. I am passing on as much amount as I have been able to collect to Murshidabad. But now Mr Hastings has appointed a man to collect additional amount from Muradbagh. I will be grateful if you could write to him so that this could be postponed. -- Enclosure: I was not able to send Kishn Gobind Vakil; instead I am sending Bilram Bose Vakil who will be able to explain my circumstances to you. -- Another, contemporary translation of the contents is CC2/2, entry no. 80.

I had received two letters from you which you wanted me to discuss with the Nawab. When I went to see the Nawab today he was busy in the arrangement of a festival which takes place today. As he did not have the time to discuss these letters I came back. God willing I will go and see him again this afternoon or at night for this purpose and will let you know the results. -- Another, contemporary translation of the contents is CR8/1, entry no. 406.

Muhammad Barakat Khan Sahib, son of Nawab Muhammad Munir al-Din Khan Sahib, has reached here after a long and difficult journey. He is coming to see you to seek forgiveness and request some favours. I have already researched into the conduct of his father and his friendship for you from Nawab Vazir al-Mumalik. The letter I received from the Nawab Vazir confirming this has been lost, along with other papers when a boat capsized near Bhagalpur. He is a courtier of the Nawab and a friend of Muhammad Ali Khan.

I have received your letter demanding one Lac rupees for the upkeep of your men. I have tried my best to comply with your demand but I am short of cash at present and have not been able to pay even my own sepoys since the month of Safar. I have been able to collect fifty thousand rupees which I have given to your agent to forward to you for the upkeep of your army. As you have suggested, I have taken the case of Raja Ram Narayan to Huzur and it has been agreed that he will award him a Khillat on Thursday. And after enquiring about your wishes from George Camp[?] he wants to come and see you. Meanwhile, I have received a bottle of very useful kushtah from an Indian Hakim. If you wish I will be glad to send you this bottle to you. -- Another, contemporary translation of the contents is CR8/1, entry no. 408.

Thank you for your letter asking me to inform you about the opinion of the Nawab Sahib on the court case against Raja Ram Narayan. As a matter of fact, like the aforesaid Raja, I had myself fallen at the rear of the army but later on I picked him up and brought him near myself. As far as the court case is concerned, it has not concluded yet. I will get the opinion of the Nawab Sahib and let you know.

Copy of a letter sent on Jumada I 16th 1171 [i.e. 26 January 1758] in reply to a letter received from the East India Company. It was a great joy to have Colonel Clive Sabitjang Bahadur join with me in chasing Siraj al-Daulah, punishing him and then receiving the Diwani of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa. I consider Nawab Sabitjang Bahadaur who has bestowed gifts of a kind which are not available in this country as my own son. I regard our friendship with the Company with great satisfaction and pray for the wellbeing and strengthening of the power of the Company.

Thank you for your letter regarding the resistance put forward by the officials of Tilya Gadhi and [Sankrigali?] against the entry of your men into these districts. I have sent your letter to the Nawab Sahib and have suggested that he should ask his officials not to treat your men in this fashion in future.

Memorandum. On the advice of Khvajah Ashraf the following amounts of saltpetre was delivered to the Dutch Kothi on the 27th Rabi` II, reg.yr. 4[i.e. 8 January 1758] (details given).

Relates to Shamshir Quli-Khan, Ramnarayan, Nawab Ahmad Khan Qurayshi, Shuja-ud-Daula, the Nawab of Oudh, and to events in Azimabad. This enclosure bears the date 25th Rabi` al-Thani, reg. yr 4 [i.e. 6 January 1758], apparently the same date as a note in English on verso: 'enclosed in Mr Parkes letter of 5th Jan 1758'.

Yad-dasht -Receipt. The sum of one Lac rupees owed by the Nawab for the upkeep of the Company's army during the month of Dhu al-Qa`dah has been received from Maharajah Ram Narayan and salaries of the army paid from this amount.

Acknowledges receipt of two letters and two vouchers for payment of salaries for the years 1165 and 1166 Bangla. He will pass on the parvanahs sent to him to Amir Beg Khan and will send a detailed report afterwards.

Refers to a dastak of Mr Roger Drake, possibly that dated reg. yr 4, 11th Sha`ban 1171 [21 April 1758], enclosed in Nandakumara's letter of 25th October 1758 [i.e. no. CR9/11/29].

I have sent a petition along with the amount of revenue collected. I am surprised not to have received the receipt of the amount sent to you. Kindly do let me know the reason for this delay. I had collected twenty five thousand rupees as the revenue due for the month of Phagan and a draft of this sum was handed over to Raza Quli Khan, son of Kazim Ali Khan, an officer employed by Rajah Kishn Chand on the 25th of Phagan [i.e. March 16?] so that it could be delivered to you in Calcutta. He has received this draft accompanied by two or three other employees of the Rajah and the draft was sent to Amir Beg Khan so that he could pass this on to you. The remaining amount from the instalment for the month amounting to twenty five thousand rupees will be sent to you soon followed by the instalment due for the month of Jeth.
