Files of unsorted papers from the office of Longueville and Co. relating to the Wynnstay estate, 1717-1909. Many of the papers concern purchases, sales and exchanges of property in Denbighshire, Merioneth, Montgomeryshire and Salop, mainly in the mid-nineteenth century. Typically they include draft deeds, abstracts, particulars, plans, valuations and conditions of sale. Some deeds relate to disentailment and the release of encumbrances on parts of the Wynnstay settled estates prior to sale, and to the right of the trustees to sell. Several documents concern the sale of Wynnstay land for railway development schemes and for water supply, such as the Vyrnwy water supply under the Liverpool Corporation Waterworks Act 1880. Several of the bundles contain papers of Watkin Edwards Wynne of Llewesog and of Owen Wynne, his brother and executor, 1785-1800. Other recurrent themes include the manorial rights of Sir Watkin Williams Wynn in the manor of Cyfeiliog, the sale of timber from the Wynnstay estates, Wynnstay finances, and the work of the trustees for the purposes of the estate sales and purchases. Several files contain statements of conveyances of parts of the Wynnstay estates and trustees’ accounts, 1858-1860. Most files contain routine accounts and correspondence of Longueville and Co., of the Wynnstay agents and other interested parties.

Miscellaneous legal papers accumulated during the routine administrative work carried out by Longueville and Co. solicitors on behalf of the Wynnstay estate. They include an account book for the Court of Great Sessions for Merioneth, 1782-1784; lawyers’ instructions, cases and opinions, drafts of crown leases of gold and silver ores, and plans for non-conformist chapels, 1865-1925.

Papers deriving from miscellaneous legal cases brought before the courts of the Council in the Marches of Wales, Chancery, the Great Sessions and the Exchequer, mainly relating to disputes over title, trespass and ejectment to try title, debts owed by bond or mortgage, breach of covenants in conveyances or leases, and detention of title deeds, predominantly in Denbighshire, Montgomeryshire and Shropshire, 1509-1819. The more substantial of the files describe cases of the Eyton family of Ruabon, 1531-1628, William Wynn of Garthgynan, 1639-1652; the bankruptcy of the Gough family of drovers, 1652-1653; Sir John Wynn’s claim on the Gwydir estate, 1660-1675; an ejectment from farm near Holt Castle, 1663-1667; a prosecution for debt against Richard Price for debt, affecting lands in Dinbren, 1663-1670; encumbrances on le Forrest and Kevenhire estate, 1664-1700; trusts involving Sir John Wynn, 1671, and 1672-1673; debts of the Grocers’ Company, 1672-1687; a breach of the peace at Wrexham, 1676; and numerous writs, mainly for summoning defendants to court. Several other cases involve Nicholas Purcell, 1562; Sir Richard Gwynne, 1606-1621; Sir John Wynn, [1664x1683], 1681-1684; Henry Wynn, 1666; Maurice Wynn, [pre- 1671]; the Kyffin family, 1644-1648, 1657-1666, 1673; and the Pugh family of Mathafarn [1636], [c. 1666].

Miscellaneous draft conveyances to Sir Watkin Williams Wynn and his trustees, Edward James Earl of Powis and Hugh Williams, of houses and lands purchased, exchanged or mortgaged, mainly in the parish and townships of Ruabon but also including properties in Llangedwyn, Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, Wrexham and elsewhere in Denbighshire, Llangurig in Montgomeryshire, and Llanuwchllyn and other parishes in Merioneth, 1842-1865. There is also an abstract of title to the Llwyn-y-maen and Horseley estates in Salop and Flintshire respectively, 1752-1782.

Miscellaneous files containing mainly draft and copy conveyances of properties belonging to the Wynnstay estate, sold by Sir Watkin Williams Wynn and/or the trustees of the settled estates in Denbighshire, Merioneth, Montgomeryshire and Salop, and the Maenan estate, Caernarfonshire, 1840-1938. Miscellaneous deeds and documents relating to the Earl of Arundel’s lands in Wales [tentatively placed here], the estates of Pentyrch and Glanyrafon, and the Caernarfonshire estate of Sir Richard Wynn, 1342, 1538, 1612-1639, 1771; deeds for properties in Llangian, Llaniestyn, Edern, etc., 1559-1615; and purchase deeds for a portion of the Gwydir estate, acquired by Sir John Wynn of Watstay, 1680-1681.
