Letters to Sir William Williams of Llanforda,

Letters to Sir William Williams of Llanforda from James Evans in Gray’s Inn, 1701-1704; various business and social acquaintenances, 1705-1733; his son, Watkin Williams Wynn, 1706-1735; his son, Robert Williams, 1709-1737; miscellaneous family members, 1711-1727; his daughter, Sidney Wynne, 1714-1735; his son, Richard Williams of Penbedw, 1717-1730; and his brother, John Williams of Chester, 1727. The letters provide a view into the private affairs of this influential family, their position in Welsh gentry society, and their involvement in local life and in parliamentary politics during the early Hanoverian period. Recurrent family topics include the death of Sir John Wynn, Sir William Williams’s second marriage, 1719, and private financial arrangements.

Papers, probably in their original bundles, deriving mainly from the election of a burgess to represent the borough of Montgomery in Parliament and concerning the corrupt practices employed in the procedure. The files comprise lists of burgesses in Llanfyllin, Montgomery and Welshpool, 1657-1679; election returns of the borough of Montgomery, 1661-1727; miscellaneous petitions relating to election of a burgess to represent Montgomery, 1679-1689; election returns of Edward Vaughan, MP, 1679-1705; the case and petition of Charles Herbert, 1685; and the case and petition of Robert Williams, 1727. Several of the cases and petitions are accompanied by copies of earlier documents to provide evidence of precedents, 1545-1685.

Miscellaneous papers deriving from various aspects of county administration and local government at town and borough level in Denbighshire, comprising copies of charters, [1424]x1700; receiver’s accounts, assessments and taxation records, 1529-1706, 1803; a case concerning the admission of burgesses in Denbigh, 1741; mayors’ accounts from Holt, 1745-1746; the Wrexham Improvement Bill, 1850-1851; and electoral registers, 1906.

Legal disputes of Sir William Williams of Llanforda,

Legal papers from cases involving Sir William Williams of Llanforda, also called William Kyffin Williams, 1674-1735, [1769], in dispute mainly with the Kyffins (his mother’s family), 1674-1689, and the Thelwalls, who were related to him by marriage, 1690-1717; other files include a dispute over the title to lands in Lloran and Trefonnen, 1713-1715, disputes with Edward Jennings, Elihu Yale and his own sons concerning legacies in the will of Sir John Wynn, 1719-1721, [1769]; and legal opinions on the remainders of the estates of Sir William Williams, 1734-1735.

Llansilin collection

The collection comprises property in p's Llansilin, Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, Llanarmon Mynydd Mawr, Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog, Llangadwaladr, Llansaffraid Glyn Ceiriog, co. Denb. Collectors: Samuel Lovatt, 1809-1837, David Jones, 1838, John Croxon, 1839-1851, Nathan Burlinson, 1851-1860. After 1860, property in p's Llansilin, Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog and Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, will be found in R116/3a and R117/2a (being rentals of estates in Shropshire and co. Denb. of which Sir Watkin Williams Wynn is seised in fee simple), then in the collection entitled Farm and Cottage Rents. Property in p. Much Wenlock collection

The collection comprises property in p's Much Wenlock and Harley, Shropshire. Also details relating to Wenlock and Westwood tithes, and lists of limeburners. Vale of Clwyd/Ruthin estate

The collection comprises property in p's Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd, Llanelidan, Derwen, Llanfwrog, Ruthin, Llanynys, Llanbedr Dyffryn Clwyd, Gyffylliog, Llandyrnog, Denbigh, Llanrhaeadr-yng-Nghinmeirch, Llangwm, and Llanhychan, co. Denb. RA28 includes a survey, late 1850s-early 1860s of the above collection (giving field names, details of acreages, and annual rent due), together with a plan of part of Plas-y-ward farm sold to the Denbigh, Ruthin & Corwen Railway Co., 1860. Collectors: John Williams, 1809-1829, William Turnor, 1830-1832, Thomas Turnor, 1833, Thomas and Walter Turnor, 1834-1837, Walter Turnor, 1838-1839, Thomas Turnor, 1840-1858, Nathan Burlinson, 1859-1861, Thomas Adey Cox, 1862, William Jones, 1863-1871, and Owen Hughes 1871-1879. From R116/3f (1860) onwards, only property in p's Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd, Llanrhaeadr-yng-Nghinmeirch, Denbigh, Llangwm and Ruthin remain. Ruthin estate fee farm rents as specified below are also contained in the series of Tithe, Chief and Fee Farm Rentals. Property in p. Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd and in Ruthin will also be found in R116/3d and R117/2c (being rentals of settled estates in cos Denb. and Mont.), then in the collection entitled Farm and Cottage Rents. Property in Llanfwrog, Llanynys, Llanbedr Dyffryn Clwyd and Llanhychan will not be found in the rentals described below, but in R116/3d and R117/2c, then in the collection entitled Farm and Cottage Rents. See also the series of Farm and Cottage Receiving Rentals (Wynnstay and Ruthin rents). In 1879 (R135/1e) only property in p's Llanrhaeadr-yng-Nghinmeirch, Denbigh, Llangwm and Ruthin remains; in 1880 (R136/1e) only property in p's Denbigh, Llangwm and Ruthin remain; and from 1881 (R137/1e) onwards only property in p's Denbigh and Llangwm remains. Estate of John Mostyn

The estate of John Mostyn, esq., in cos Mer., and Denb., whereof Mr Francis Chambre is appointed receiver in pursuance of an order of the Court of Chancery, made 6 Feb. 1777, in a cause where Sir Rowland Hill, bart, and Sir Watkin Williams Wynn, bart (on behalf of themselves and the rest of the creditors of the said John Mostyn who should come in and contribute to that suit) are plaintiffs, and John Mostyn and Robert Wynne, esq's, are defendants. R52/4a-e (1788) contains only property in p. Gwyddelwern, co. Mer., in p's Derwen, Gyffylliog, Henllan, Ruthin, Denbigh and Llanrhaeadr [-yng-Nghinmeirch], co. Denb., and p. Hawarden, co. Flint. From R58/2 onwards, the estate of the late John Mostyn, in mortgage to Sir Watkin Williams Wynn, consists of property in p's Gyffylliog, Denbigh and Llanrhaeadr [-yng-Nghinmeirch] only. Collector: John Williams, 1797-1809.

Llwydiarth estate

Llwydiarth estate comprises property in p's Llanfihangel-yng-Ngwynfa (t's Llwydiarth, Fach-wen, Cadwnfa, Garth Uchaf, Cefncleisiog, Rhiwlas, Halfen, Dolwar, Farchwel, Nantycyndy, Llaethbwlch), Llangadfan (t's Cyffin, Bryngwaeddan, Llangadfan, Blowty, Moelfeliarth), Llanfair Caereinion (t's Gwenynog, Llanfair, Pen-tyrch, Dol-ged, Llanloddian Isaf and Uchaf, Rhiwhiriarth, Rhosaflo, Peniarth, Bryn-glas, Brynelen), Llangynyw (t's Cynhinfa, Gwenynog), Llanerfyl (t's Cefn-llys-isaf and Cefn-llys-uchaf, Cnewyll, Craen, Coetalog), Manafon (t. Dwyriw), Llanwyddelan (t. Treganol), Garthbeibio, Llanwddyn, Llanllugan and Welshpool, all in co. Mont. Llanfair Caereinion tithes are included to R70/7 (1815); for Llanfair Caereinion tithes, 1815-1861, see collection entitled Llanfair Caereinion Tithes. Chief rents for p's Llanfihangel-yng-Ngwynfa (t's Rhiwlas, Dolwar, Cadwnfa), Llanwddyn (t. Garthbwlch) and Llansanffraid [?-ym-Mechain], co. Mont., are included from R99 to R116 (1844-1861). Collectors: E. Lewis, 1809-1815, Thomas Hartley, 1816, Samuel Hughes, 1818-1834, David Jones, 1835-1857, Joseph Owen Jones, 1857-1861. After 1861, property in p's Llangadfan, Llanfair Caereinion, Llanerfyl, Garthbeibio, Llanwddyn and Llanfihangel-yng-Ngwynfa, will be found in R117/2c (being a rental of settled estates in cos Denb. and Mont.), then in the collection entitled Farm and Cottage Rents. Glan-llyn estate

Sir Watkin Williams Wynn (d. 1749) acquired the Glan-llyn estate with the Llwydiarth estate. The estate comprised property in p's Llanuwchllyn (t's Penaran, Cynllwyd, Pennant-lliw, Tre Castell), Llanycil (Bala Town, t. Streflyn), Llangywer, Llanfor, Llandderfel and Corwen, all co. Mer. From R26/6 (1741?), property in [p. Llanuwchllyn] (Caergai) is added, and between 1744 and 1748 (R27/9-R29/6) and in 1750 (R30/5) the chief rents of the manor of Pennant-lliw are also included. Collectors: David Morgan, 1626, John Evans, 1701-1706 and 1714-1728, Randle Jones, 1736-1751, and Thomas Jones 1752-1772. After 1772, this collection continues in Collection I.

Collection I

From 1786 onwards Collection I is divided into three parts: (1i) Rhiwgoch estate; (2ii) Glascoed, Llanforda, Plas-y-ward B (co. Mer.); (2iii) Manor of Valle Crucis (p. Llanfrothen), (2iv) Llanfair collection (p. Mallwyd), (2v) Glan-llyn estate, (2vi) Purchased estate 1768 (p. Llanuwchllyn);. (3Vi) Purchased estate 1768 (p. Llangedwyn), (3vii) Llwydiarth estate, (Llangedwyn collection), (3viii) Llwydiarth estate (Mochnant collection), (3ix) Glascoed, Llanforda, Plas-y-ward B (co. Mont.).

Collection II

From 1786 onwards, Collection II is divided as follows: A. Manor of Valle Crucis; Stanwardine collection; Wynnstay Home Rents; the 1748 purchased estate; The 1768 purchased estate; and B. Glascoed, Llanforda, Plas-y-ward A (co. Denb.).

Maenan lordship and other properties in co's Caern and Denb.

Maenan lordship, co. Caern, and properties in p's Eglwys-bach and Llangernyw, co. Denb., are combined from 1683 (L1301) with property in p's Llansanffraid Glan Conwy and Betws Abergele, co. Denb., and p. Penmachno, co. Caern. Property purchased from William Robinson, esq., in p's Llansanffraid Glan Conwy and Llandrillo-yn-Rhos (t. Eirias) is added in 1691 (R8/9). A property in Wrexham is also added from 1684 (L1301) to 1691 (R8/9). R3/5 (1629), R6/7 (1671), R4/7 (1671) and R4/9 (1680) contain property in Commote of Isaf. Collectors: John Jones, 1675-1701, Edward Lloyd, 1710-1752, William Owen, 1759-1769, William Griffith, 1770-1771. For continuation of this property post-1772 see Collection V.

Gwydir estate

The Gwydir estate proper did not become part of the Wynnstay estate, but passed to the Dukes of Ancaster through the marriage of Robert, Lord Willoughby of Eresby, duke of Ancaster, and Mary, sole daughter and heiress of Sir Richard Wynn, 4th bart (dec. 1674). However, a rental for 1680 of the Gwydir estate and two rentals for 1671 of Gwydir property in co. Mer. are found amongst the general rentals of the Wynnstay estate. The rentals comprise property in p's [Aber] (t. Y Wig), Betws-y-coed and Llandudno, co. Caern; p's Llanrwst, Llanddoged, Gwytherin, Llanfair Talhaearn, Llaneilian-yn-Rhos, Llansanffraid Glan Conwy, Llanrhaeadr-yng-Nghinmeirch and Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr, co. Denb.; p's Llangar, Llandrillo-yn-Edeirnion, Gwyddelwern, Llanfor and Llandderfel, co. Mer.; and p's Isleworth, Heston, co. Mddx. L1311 (1671) contains only property in p's Llandderfel and Llandrillo-yn-Edeirnion, co. Mer. R4/6 (1671) contains only property in p's Llandderfel, Gwyddelwern, Llangar and Llanfor, co. Mer. Plas-y-ward estate

The estate originally comprised property p's Llanynys (t's Maesmaencymro, Gyffeilliog), Llanfwrog (t. Bodangharad), Ruthin, Llanbedr Dyffryn Clwyd, Bodfari (t. Aberchwiler), Llandyrnog, Llanhychan, Llangwm in commote of Dinmael, the lordship of Llwynydd and Rhisgog, all in co. Denb. In 1697, property in p's Derwen, Llanelidan and Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd, co. Denb., and p. Llandrillo-yn-Edeirnion (t's Garthiaen, Branas Isaf), co. Mer., is added. In 1701, property in p's Penmorfa, Beddgelert, Dolwyddelan, Capel Curig, Penmachno, Llanberis, Dwygyfylchi and Llanfairfechan, co. Caern., is also added. Sir William Williams bought the Glantant estate in 1679, and it appears in the Glascoed collection in 1680. The Plas-y-ward estate is combined with the Glascoed collection, 1704-1715 (R12-R13). From 1712 (R13) property in p. Llanynys (t's Trefechan, Ysgeibion) and [p. Llanrhaeadr-yng-Nghinmeirch] (t. Pentrellech) is added. RA8 (1653) contains property in p. Oswestry (t's Trefonnen, Treflach), Shropshire. R4/8 contains an inventory of the goods and chattels of Edward Thelwall of Plasyward, co. Denb., esq., appraised in Jan. 1677.
