Gwydir estate

The Gwydir estate proper did not become part of the Wynnstay estate, but passed to the Dukes of Ancaster through the marriage of Robert, Lord Willoughby of Eresby, duke of Ancaster, and Mary, sole daughter and heiress of Sir Richard Wynn, 4th bart (dec. 1674). However, a rental for 1680 of the Gwydir estate and two rentals for 1671 of Gwydir property in co. Mer. are found amongst the general rentals of the Wynnstay estate. The rentals comprise property in p's [Aber] (t. Y Wig), Betws-y-coed and Llandudno, co. Caern; p's Llanrwst, Llanddoged, Gwytherin, Llanfair Talhaearn, Llaneilian-yn-Rhos, Llansanffraid Glan Conwy, Llanrhaeadr-yng-Nghinmeirch and Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr, co. Denb.; p's Llangar, Llandrillo-yn-Edeirnion, Gwyddelwern, Llanfor and Llandderfel, co. Mer.; and p's Isleworth, Heston, co. Mddx. L1311 (1671) contains only property in p's Llandderfel and Llandrillo-yn-Edeirnion, co. Mer. R4/6 (1671) contains only property in p's Llandderfel, Gwyddelwern, Llangar and Llanfor, co. Mer. Hirnant, title deeds,

Title deeds of properties in the parish of Hirnant, Montgomeryshire, and the township of Trefedw, usually called Cwm y Vedw in the original deeds. Most of them were acquisitions of the Vaughan family of Llangedwyn and Llwydiarth and Sir William Williams of Glascoed in the seventeenth century, augmented by purchases by Sir Watkin Williams Wynn between 1811 and 1831. The files describe miscellaneous properties in Trefedw, 1531-1732, 1811; miscellaneous properties in Hirnant, 1573-1734; Cae yr Braich, Werglodd y Dyar y Ty, etc., Trefedw, 1598-1687; Tyddyn y Ty Croes and a sheepwalk, Hirnant, 1617-1637, 1711; Llwyn Pale Bychan and Y Rhos Gough Leia, Trefedw, 1635-1638; ffriths in Kefn Hir y Mynydd, Trefedw, 1667-1687; Ty’n y Celyn and Cae David Bevan, 1759-1828; and Nant y Brithell, Hirnant, 1789-1831.

Hope and Mold, title deeds,

Title deeds relating to properties in the parishes of Hope and Mold, with files for Argoed, 1568-1580; Mold, 1584; and Bryn y Mynyll, Erow Tu ar Rhyd and Erow yn Rhyd y Deved in Hersedd and Hope Owen, 1626-1707.

Household and tour account books,

Household account books of Wynnstay and the London town houses occupied by the Williams Wynn family, eleven in total. Nine of them contain accounts compiled by Samuel Sidebotham, steward to the fourth baronet, 1768-1777; the tenth appears in a different hand, 1779-1781, and the eleventh is of later date, 1843-1857. The first volume records the expenses of Sir Watkin Williams Wynn’s grand tour through France and Italy, 1768-1769; the second includes the expenses of Sir Watkin Williams’ Wynn’s coming of age party, 1770; the next seven volumes contain general household accounts, systematically organised into sections for sundry disbursements, pictures, Master Williams Wynn, charities, music, house rent, taxes and repairs, cellar, stable, servants’ livery, servants’ bills and travelling expenses, servant’s wages, housekeeper, kitchens, cash receipts and balance. From 1775, the house in St James’s Square is added and there are other variations in the tenth volume; the eleventh volume has a different layout. These account books reveal the fourth baronet’s interests and lavish lifestyle, listing payments to artists, craftsmen, entertainments, musicians, societies, and charities. The sundry disbursements include monuments and a font for Ruabon church. Recurrent payments to individuals include the artist Paul Sandby, 1770-1773, sculptor Joseph Nollekens, 1772-1774, various music sellers, the musicians Charles Linton, 1771-1773, David Parry, 1770-1777, [Richard] Hay, 1773-1780, and [Stephen] Paxton, 1770-1777, Jeremiah and William Parkinson, 1774-1780, theatre scene painter George Wilkinson, 1774-1777, potters Wedgwood and Bentley, 1771-1775, and others.

Indexes to vouchers

From 1889 onwards, the vouchers are bound according to the estate, i.e. Home, Wynnstay, Glan-llyn, Llanbryn-mair, Llangedwyn, Llanforda, Llwydiarth. The indexes to vouchers after 1889 are likewise bound according to the estate. Thus, for example, VIF1 (1890) is an index to the Llanforda Estate Vouchers V54 (1890). Each index is arranged alphabetically according to the name on the voucher to whom payment is made, together with the number of the page on which the voucher is to be found in the appropriate bound volume of vouchers.

Leases, tenancy agreements, etc.

Leases, agreements and various other papers relating to tenancies mainly on the Wynnstay estate, comprising a distraint on the tenant of Allt Goch in the parish of Meifod, Montgomeryshire, 1815-1823, miscellaneous leases and agreements, 1842-1892, and a lease to Cefn Mawr and Rhosymedre Gas Company Limited, 1865.

Legal and arbitration papers, Much Wenlock,

Papers deriving from lawsuits or arbitration involving the successive owners of the Much Wenlock estate or their tenants, comprising a legal opinion on a lease, [post-1603]; an arbitration award for land in Spittle Street, 1649; cases of the Gage family, 1703-1714; case of Sir John Wynn concerning the election of a bailiff, 1714; an ejectment from farm of the manor of Much Wenlock, 1720; prosecutions for holding a market at Broseley without licence, 1745, and Sir Watkin Williams Wynn’s case respecting Wenlock enclosure award, 1780.

Legal disputes of Sir Watkin Williams Wynn, third, fourth and fifth Baronets,

Papers deriving from legal disputes of Sir Watkin Williams Wynn, 3rd Baronet Wynnstay, 1719-[1748], and the fourth and fifth baronets, 1750-1793. Three of them relate to demands for legacies due from the estates of Edward Vaughan of Llwydiarth, Maurice Vaughan and Mary Strangeways (nee Vaughan), 1719-1731. There is a substantial prosecution of John Humffreys, former steward of the Llwydiarth and Llangedwyn estates, 1726-1735. The remainder include Lady Williams’s entitlement to the personal estate of Sir William Williams of Llanforda, 1740; Robert Williams’s entitlement and the payment of his debts, 1750-1751; Sir Watkin Williams Wynn’s recovery of debts due from the bankrupt John Howell, 1785-1787; an action of ejectment from farm in Lloran and Llywarch, [1792]-1793; and a boundary dispute in the manor of Arwystli, [19th cent].

Legal papers from cases involving Sir William Williams of Llanforda, also called William Kyffin Williams, 1674-1735, [1769], in dispute mainly with the Kyffins (his mother’s family), 1674-1689, and the Thelwalls, who were related to him by marriage, 1690-1717; other files include a dispute over the title to lands in Lloran and Trefonnen, 1713-1715, disputes with Edward Jennings, Elihu Yale and his own sons concerning legacies in the will of Sir John Wynn, 1719-1721, [1769]; and legal opinions on the remainders of the estates of Sir William Williams, 1734-1735.
