Merioneth county administration papers

Papers relating to the county administration of Merioneth, in which members of the Pryse and Salesbury families of Gogerddan and Rug held official posts. They comprise sheriff’s papers, 1580, 1740; an agreement about the election in 1671; the appointment of Deputy Lieutenant, 1685; and a writ and oaths to swear in Thomas Pryse as JP, 1739.

Letters of various individuals connected to the families of Maurice, Owen, Ormsby-Gore and Godolphin through marriage, friendship or business and a small number of items where neither the author nor the recipient can be identified, 1582-1933.
They comprise letters to, from or about the Wynn family of Glyn, 1596-1690 (whose correspondents include Hugh Pennant, [c. 1663]), Anne Jones of Clenennau, 1679-1695, Rowlands of Nant, [1680s], Glynne of Eleirnion, [1680s]-1703, Humphrey Humphreys, 1700, Waller [of Castletown], 1706-1710, James Brynker, 1724, John Egerton, 1756, Edward Lloyd of Llanforda, 1680, the Seymour family, 1831-1868, Frank Weston, 1914, and others, 1582-1933. Topics include threats of invasions by the Spanish 1596, and the French, 1743; genealogies of Glynne of Glynllifon, [1605] and Gore, 1912; collection of the ship mise in Merionethshire, 1618; Sir Robert Owen 's dispute with Col. William Price of Rhiwlas over land in Gest, 1679-[c. 1694]; estate business of Margaret Lloyd of Cesail Gyfarch, 1729; claims on the estates of Richard Clayton, 1735, and of Robert Godolphin Owen, 1793; church administration in Llanyblodwel and elsewhere, [1730s?], 1756, 1868, 1914; parliamentary elections in Montgomeryshire, 1774 and Leitrim, 1874; the compulsory purchase of Oswestry Corporation property for improving access to London Bridge, 1831; complaints about the Shrewsbury and Hereford Railway, 1854; the Crimean War, 1855; First World War action against the Turks, 1918; and other items of national and international news. - - - The Stuart correspondence (mainly copies) includes James I to Sir George Calvert on the priveleges of the House of Commons, 1621; the Covenanters to the Earl of Essex, 1639; Sir William Temple to the Countess of Essex on the death of her daughter, [pre-1699]; and others, on the Oath of Allegiance, [1606], the rebellion and conquest of Ireland, 1649-1652, and the character of Sir George Jeffreys, 1680.

Deeds for land purchases by Charles Watkin Williams Wynn

Title deeds relating to farms and lands purchased by Charles Watkin Williams Wynn, situated mainly in the parish of Meifod, Montgomeryshire, 1582-1837. The properties include the Rhosfawr and Dyffryn estates, purchased in 1803, Pentrego, Maes-y-wern, Pen-y-coed, Main, Ceunant, etc., purchased 1806, Tyddyn y Cae Du in the township of Peniarth, purchased 1810, Allt Fawr purchased 1811, Peniarth Farm purchased 1812, Mathrafal or New Bridges in Llangynyw, and Gelly in the township of Peniarth, purchased 1813-1814. Among the former owners of the properties were Evan Meredith and his son David Evans of Mathrafal, the Phillips family of Pentrego, Humffreys (Humphreys) of Llwyn, Parry of Main and Penyvoil, Williams and Davies of Peniarth, Montgomeryshire, Richard Rocke of Trefnannu and Shrewsbury, Ann Jodrell of Ankerwyke, Buckinghamshire, William Mostyn Owen of Woodhouse and Thomas Owen Jones of Bishopsgate Street, London.
Many of the deeds are extremely complex and it may be necessary to search more than one file in the chronological sequence below, in order to trace all of the deeds relating to a single property.
Found with the deeds is the original schedule compiled in 1849, and a deed not listed in the schedule, 1853.

Pryse family probate records

Probate records, comprising wills, administrations and related papers of the Pryse and Loveden families of Gogerddan, Woodstock and Buscot, 1584-[19]16, and branches of the Pryse family at Glanfred, Ynysgrigog and Glanmeryn, 1653-1752. The series includes the will of George Lewis Langton of Lincolns Inn, who died in Rome, 1738, and the will of Edward Loveden Loveden of Buscot Park, accompanied by a book of executor’s accounts, 1822. Some of the records are original, others are drafts or copies mainly in manuscript and a few later ones in typescript.

A small number of title deeds for houses and lands in the parish of Machynlleth, Montgomeryshire, situated in the township of Isygarreg, 1584, 1862, the town of Machynlleth, 1615, and Derwenlas, 1778.

Letters to the Pryse, Loveden and Pughe families

Letters mainly to or by members of the Pryse family of Gogerddan, Edward Loveden Loveden of Buscot Park and occasionally Pughe of Mathafarn, 1586-1867. Most files also contain occasional third party letters and copies of outgoing correspondence. The largest numbers of letters are from the agents, John Pierce of Wallog, Nantcollen and Lodge Park, David Morgan of Gogerddan and Ynyseidiol, John Lewes of Carmarthen and Oliver Lloyd of Cardigan. They discuss mainly the estate administration, financial business, such as mortgages and land purchases, legal affairs and family matters. Their letters reflect the agricultural problems in eighteenth century Cardiganshire, the persecution of tenants by agents of neighbouring estates, the operation of the Cardiganshire silver/lead mines especially Cwmsymlog, local politics and the rivalry between gentry families to secure parliamentary seats and other influential positions. There are numerous references to the Powell family of Nanteos, Vaughan (Lisburne) of Trawsgoed, Lloyd of Mabws, Lloyd and Johnes of Abermad, Lloyd of Peterwell, Johnes of Dolaucothi and Hafod, and Campbell of Stackpole Court, as well as their employees and political supporters. Other subjects include the Pembrokshire collieries, a petition to Parliament to improve Aberystwyth harbour, manorial rights to Nantyrarian, the mortgages to Samuel Wilson Warneford, stock rearing, fox hunting, shooting and fishing. Pryse family trust papers (various)

Papers deriving from various trusts, being either trusts undertaken by members of the Pryse family acting as trustees for others, or trusts undertaken for the Pryse family, 1587-1950. They include two trusts by Sir Richard Pryse (d. 1623); the administration by Richard Pryse (d. 1675) of the estate of Lady Mary Vandyke, 1653; and trusts by Edward Pryse of Llanvread for William Corbett of Nanteos 1685, Walter Pryse for Jonathan Castlemain of Painswick, 1731, Pryse Pryse for Francis Warneford, 1833; and J.C.P Vaughan for the J.P. Vaughan Pryse trust, 1937. There are also reports on the settled estates of Sir Pryse Pryse, 1888, 1896; and accounts with the trustees of the settled estates, 1887, 1901-1950.
