Special meeting re Coal Tax 1901,

Meetings (25 and 26 April 1901) discussing the arrangement of a Deputation comprising members of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association and representative members of other groups (including both the Cardiff and Swansea Chambers of Commerce, and also area shipowners) to visit the Chancellor of the Exchequer regarding the proposed Coal Tax.

Discussions mainly concerned setting up the (1931) Conciliation Board, alterations to the 1926 Conciliation Board Agreement, and terms of the 1931 Agreement.

Matters discussed include strikes at Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen Colliery, the Gresford Colliery Disaster, the position of the South Wales coal trade, and the settlement and signing of the new Conciliation Board Agreement. Also included is a separate Appendix of supporting material - in the form of graphs, memoranda and reports - presented at the October meetings before the Independent Chairman.

Grenfell, M.P. Matters discussed include pitwood supplies from Portugal, the meeting with Mr. Grenfell, fire prevention in collieries, war advance payments, travelling of colliery workers, labour needs of the mining industry of South Wales, compulsory colliery inspections, and proposals for a new Conciliation Board Agreement (1941).

Minutes of one meeting of the Joint Grading Sub-committee appointed by the Conciliation Board for the Coal Trade of Monmouthshire and South Wales, 5 November 1945. The purpose of the meeting was to consider a claim by the workmen's representatives that certain haulage enginemen at named collieries are to be considered main haulage enginemen and entitled to a higher wage rate.

Memoranda of Agreements which contain generally lists of the representatives from both the owners' and workmens' sides, the decision regarding general rate of wages or other topics in dispute, rules of procedure and the effective dates of the Agreement, and relevant memoranda and statements. They may also include printed notices which were to be displayed by the collieries. Many Agreements contain original signatures.
