The majority of the cases concern the recovery of debts due to or owed out of the estate of Thomas Pryse. The most substantial files record an action by the executors against Sir Hugh Middleton, Sir Carbery Pryse, infant (per John Herbert his guardian) and William Wogan, 1661-1683; and a case brought by Martin de Carbonell and Justina his wife against Edward Pryse, Dame Dorothy Pryse and others, and subsequently by Carbonell’s executors, John Bontanden,, John Guerrier and Paul Jodrell, against Lewis Pryse, 1696-1711. Trust documents of the Caethle estate

Deeds, 1505-1712, relating to the Caethle estate in the parish of Tywyn, Merioneth, owned by the Vaughan family, for whom William Pughe of Mathafarn was a trustee in 1677. The names of John Lloyd of Maesypandy and the Nanney family recur frequently [probably as earlier trustees to William Vaughan]. The Gogerddan family also appears to have had an early interest, as shown by the will of John Pryse of Gogerddan, 1584 (see ref.), and a lease of a property in Aberdyfi (Aberdovey) made by Sir Richard Pryse in 1604/5. James Pryse married into the family of Ynysymaengwyn, also in the locality of Tywyn. The series contains title deeds of properties mainly in the townships of Caethle, Aberdyfi (Aberdovey), Cefnrhos and Botalog, and St Cadfan’s lands, 1505-1668; mortgages, 1664-1676; family settlements which pre-date the start of the trust, 1591-1629, as well as deeds within the operation of the trust itself, 1660-1726. There is also a file of deeds of the Nanney and Lloyd families, which has been linked tentatively to the Caethle trust, 1681-1701.

Mathafarn estate letters

Letters mainly to John Pughe of Mathfarn, MP from his family, agents, solicitors, friends and acquaintances, with copies of his replies and forwarded third party letters, 1704-1734. They reflect the private life of John Pughe among the Welsh gentry and his position as MP for the Montgomery Boroughs, containing news of Parliamentary and county affairs, together with expressions of local political support. Many of the letters discuss the household supplies, servants, livestock, sale of rabbits and estate management at Mathafarn, the trust of William Vaughan of Caethle, debts and mortgages, emphasising the difficulty of securing money on estates in Wales, the solicitation of John Pughe’s influence to gain employment or ecclesiastical preferment, appeals for legal help and requests for money. The latter demonstrate both the precarious system of credit, and the financial dependency of widows and single women in the eighteenth century. Specific subjects of interest are described at file level.
