Anthony Bevin, 10 Downing Street, Whitehall. The New Years Honours. Notes what Huw T. Edwards says about Captain Crawshay. The Prime Minister will consider the record of Alderman Mars Jones. The claim of Mr Clayton Russon; he received the OBE only in 1952, and it is customary to allow some years to elapse before conferring a further honour. 'Confidential'.

Anthony Bevin, 10 Downing Street, Whitehall. Writes on behalf of the Prime Minister in response to Huw T. Edwards's letter relating to a Civil List Pension for Mr J. W. Jones and Mr R. Williams Parry. Discusses the unsuccessful outcome of the two applications. Archie [Lush], 5 Gladstone Place, Tredegar, Monmouthshire. Thanks recipient for the copies of Y Faner and for the article and the poem by Ronald Griffiths. Although he had been expecting Aneurin Bevan's death for some time, there was 'an awful finality' about the end. It will take him some time to adjust himself to his death. While Bevan was alive, the writer never knew what lay ahead. Now has to make a statement about his own future. 'The prospect of Westminster never appealed to me. It's such an unreal world! And the Labour Party!! I suppose I shall always be 'political' but I wish I could find a real crusade and real comradeship in a struggle'.

Arthur M. Roberts, Y Drych, Utica, New York. Thanks for Huw T. Edwards's manuscript entitled 'Eleri a Minnau'. Hopes to be able to publish the whole of it in the July issue of Y Drych. Hopes that Huw T. Edwards will feel able to contribute again in the near future. Gives a little of his family history.

Arthur Moyle, MP, PPS to the Prime Minister, House of Commons, London. He was delighted to read in the press of the recipient's promotion to be Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Prime Minister. Considers this to be a very well deserved honour; all of his old friends in North Wales are delighted as is Huw T. Edwards and the people of Llanidloes. They are all very proud of the work of the Labour Party within the House of Commons, and the writer believes that the propaganda work of the Tory press is making no impression. There is general confidence in the Labour Government. They do hope that the recipient will be blessed with good health to execute his duties, and they will, of course, be delighted to hear of any further promotion in the future. 'You have now definitely got your feet on the steps of the promotion ladder'. 'Personal' For reply see A1/10.

Arthur Thomas, Tegfan, Llanfair Caereinion. Wishes to congratulate Huw T. Edwards on the brave step which he has taken in resigning from the Chairmanship of the Council of Wales and Monmouthshire. Is wholly convinced that Huw T. Edwards's action was the most appropriate step, and everyone whom he has talked to agrees. There is growing dissatisfaction with the way Wales is being treated by London. Hopes that Huw T. Edwards's action will bear fruit. Welsh.

Arthur Williams, Branas, Criccieth. Had meant to write to Huw T. Edwards for some time. Huw T. Edwards met the brother Dr O. Lewis Jones, Criccieth, when he was at Patagonia some time ago. Many friends there including Mr W.R.P. George and Mr Walford feel that some small honour should be awarded to Dr O. Lewis Jones, perhaps the OBE or the MBE. Details were given to the local MP some time ago. But many local friends felt that an approach should also be made to Huw T. Edwards as he is a man of influence throughout Wales. Encloses a few details about Dr Jones and a press cutting (A1/922a). The writer should have noted that he was a lay preacher. Hopes that Huw T. Edwards will forgive him for writing to him as he knows that he is very busy. Welsh.

Aubrey Jones, MP, Minister of Fuel and Power, Thames House South, Millbank, London SW1. Wishes to thank Huw T. Edwards for his service as a part-time member of the Wales Gas Board as his term of office ends on 31 August 1956. Realises that the contribution made by part-time members of Public Boards requires much time and effort on their part. Hopes that Huw T. Edwards will be agreeable to continuing in the same position for a further three years until 31 August 1959. 'Private and Confidential'.

Austin Strutt, Home Office, Whitehall, London SW1. Careful consideration is being given at the Home Office to the Council's recommendations about government administration in Wales as in the Third Memorandum. The Government is committed to attempting to achieve all possible economies in keeping with the Chancellor of the Exchequer's 10 per cent cut. The Board of Trade has resolved that its two regional offices at Swansea and Rhyl are to be closed. This decision was taken after the Board of Trade had become aware of the views of the Council for Wales on Welsh administration. This proposal was 'a special case'. The Welsh Office of the Board of Trade still retains the same degree of independence. A larger programme for the country as a whole is in train. Did not wish Huw T. Edwards to hear of these matters from another source. 'Personal and Confidential'.

Austin Strutt, Home Office, Whitehall, London SW1. Thanks for suggesting the three names for appointment to the Merseyside and North Wales Electricity Board. It is likely that Mr Charles Morris Jones will be approached in the first instance, although he does not have an interest in labour relations. The other names could well come in useful. 'Confidential'.
