Lewis T. Lewis, Dynevor Mining Offices, Neath,

Statement of account and request for an appointment have been sent to Fenton's Hotel, London. Ironstone has not been paid for, but Morgan Lewis ought to have applied for the payment. Advance of wages settled with Henry Thomas. The advance must be paid or the men would go to Aberdare. 10% from July 1 instead of June 1, as given at adjoining collieries.

Edward Lloyd, Aberpergwm,

10% Pay advance is binding. Culm trade at a standstill. Credit has been reduced from 6 to 3 months. Price to be maintained but 6d. a ton to be allowed to each proprietor. Stock is 8,000 tons. Colliers at the Hay will not work without 5s. a day with food and beer and women demand 2s. a day plus food. Intends proposing a siding between Briton Ferry and Neath at canal meeting. Bought timber from Mrs Smith. Discussions concerning 10% pay award with Price and Captain Young. Receipts for Poor Rates and Highway Board, 1873, enclosed.

Edward Lloyd, Aberpergwm,

Cheque for poor rate overdue. Mr Rowland has written about the canal tolls. Pugh absent without leave. Colliers got 10% more this month but are not satisfied. Lewis Lewis has replied to letter for an account of the castings sold. Requested him to make a plan of the colliery. Lewis refuses to acknowledge the writer's authority. No colliers helped with the hay. Maesmarchog people selling the coal at a discount. Mr Price selling at what price he liked. Hay is still out. Offers for Gwain Clawdd, hopes Budd will take it.

Edward Lloyd, Aberpergwm,

Sent letter to Geneva. Sold ponies at St Mary's Hill to Williams of Miskin. Stopped cleaning of canal. The Coedcae is being finished. Mason's price is ridiculous. Pugh absent again. John the Smith's son ran away as he could earn 13s. a day at Resolven Colliery and only 4s.6 at Aberpergwm. Houses at Pentre Malwod and Abernant Hir need rethatching. Had another offer for Gwain Clawdd.

Edward Lloyd, Aberpergwm,

Colliery not at work so little to pay. Wharf charge not received. Had an enquiry concerning 10,000 tons to go to France. Meeting David Llewellin to settle Gwain Clawdd, but would have liked a response from MSW. Still in negotiation for sale of ponies but can not get what they are worth. Having front done up. Corn is spoiling and hay is out. John Thomas's daughter married, party at the Lamb and Flag. Wood on Gwain Clawdd valued by Patterson.

Edward Lloyd, Aberpergwm,

Pay details for month enclosed. Delays in payment would be unacceptable to the workers. Estate pay heavy due to the hay harvest. Trade continues slack. Has sold another pony. Masons refuse to work under 8s. a day, but thinks to have engaged a mason and boy for 6s. a day for 12 months.

Edward Lloyd, Aberpergwm,

Is sending ponies to show at Abergavenny. Rain continues and hundreds of acres of hay not cut, corn damaged. Canal work will begin next week.

Edward Lloyd, Aberpergwm,

Offers by Hinde and Habbakuk for Gwain Clawdd. Pony show at Abergavenny. Gave colliers notice to quit houses as they did not return to work. Rosser colliery provides steam coal and Gwain Clawdd provides anthracite. Trade is poor and stock unsold. Meeting with colliers about the Imperial ton, offered to pay them the same price as the miners ton.

Edward Lloyd, Aberpergwm,

Requests return of enclosures concerning Gwain Clawdd. Pugh's absenteeism and the neglect of accounts. New man found for £200. Old Bank Book needed. Carrying Maesgwyn hay today.

Edward Lloyd, Aberpergwm,

Answer required about Gwain Clawdd and bank book. Fears mischief from Lewis Lewis. Given Philip Davis notice to quit. All cottages on the estate have been visited and new rents to be apportioned next week.

Edward Lloyd, Aberpergwm,

Bank book arrived. New clerk starts on Monday. Received six resolutions made by the colliers of Aberpergwm colliery [details given]. Strike is likely, under notice to quit houses. Aston account enclosed. After the colliers meeting, the Justice Tom Howells, Saturne and Thomas Jones were burnt when the Justice put the gunpowder tin on fire instead of the tea tin. Wharf cheques required. Account enclosed payable to Edward Aston for valuing timber.

Morgan Stuart Williams, Fenton's Hotel, St James,

Copy letter from Morgan Stuart Williams. Understands that he is to be considered for the position of Sheriff of the county of Glamorgan for 1872 and begs to be able to withdraw. Following the recent demise from consumption of his two elder brothers, his own health necessitates his absence from the county and his preparations for departure to India are in hand. Hopes that on his return he may be again so honoured.
