John Richard Williams Papers,

The papers consist mostly of photograph albums, photographs and postcards. Most of the albums were compiled by John Richard Williams and Anne Williams following holidays spent in various parts of Europe and North Africa, ca. 1923-1938. They contain a mixture of postcard views, souvenirs, programmes, menus etc. and photographs taken by Anne Williams. One photograph album entitled 1914-1918 The Great War includes postcards and photographs of battle scenes, ruined buildings and of John Richard Williams with fellow servicemen. -- The photographs and postcards cover a variety of subjects and can range from family photographs to those of chapels, war memorials and views throughout Europe. -- Amongst the miscellaneous items, there are numerous certificates awarded to John Richard Williams and a few which belong to Anne Williams. They may relate to war service, the law society, free masonry and chapel-going. Also, there are souvenir booklets and guides to European cities, tourist attractions and cruises. There is some correspondence and other personal records. -- A few items relate in particular to the First World War such as the Observer's Flying Log Book of Lt John R. Williams, 1918 which contains descriptions of aerial patrols and ground warfare. -- The two books written by John Richard Williams are also included amongst his papers.

The collection consists mainly of correspondence regarding the death of R. Silyn Roberts and the sale of his books, the Workers Educational Association, Bethel Chapel in Tanygrisiau, Merionethshire, the death of the brother of Mary Silyn Roberts in Australia and other matters. Also, there are letters written by Mary Silyn Roberts and R. Silyn Roberts to Professor F. Rönning, Copenhagen, Denmark, 1904-1922. -- There are lectures and general notebooks which belonged to Mary Silyn Roberts when studying at the University College of Aberystwyth, pre 1905; reports and letters regarding the Women's Land Army in Wales, 1914-1918; a photograph of the grave of R. Silyn Roberts and a ticket of a meeting at Mynydd y Cilgwyn Chapel, 1846.

Papers of Rev. R. Peris Williams,

The collection contains letters written to R. Peris Williams from various individuals; addresses and notebooks on religious matters such as the attempt to lift the debt owed by Henryd Chapel, Conwy, Caernarfonshire. Also, a few Eisteddfod adjudications, 1867-1878 and his own poetical works, 1849-1855 as well as two diaries written by him whilst serving as Chaplain in the First World War, 1915-1917 and details on the death of Hedd Wyn in 1917. -- There is a large section of papers belonging and relating to Gwalchmai. Papers regarding his career as a minister and preacher collated most probably by R. Peris Williams for his memoir on Gwalchmai. Also, a large part of the collection is taken up by letters written to Gwalchmai from various correspondents, family and friends, poets and writers. They provide an insight into the life and interests of the literary men of the Victorian age in Wales and reveal a great deal about religious matters. -- Other material, include, collections of hymns; sermons preached by Emrys, 1854-1856; sailing book, 1884-1885 of the Enterprise, captained by George Lewis; diary of Ceiriog as a station master in 1872; autobiography of Rev. Samuel Evans, Llandegla, Denbighshire, 1900 and essays on philology given to Gwallter Mechain by Dr Karl Meyer of Germany, 1844.

This collection consists of war diaries, 1916-1918, of the 14th (Service Battalion), Royal Welsh Fusiliers. The diaries, with some entries written in the hand of Major Wynn Wheldon, give a day-to-day chronicle of the activities of the battalion on the Western Front including reports on operations and actions, particulars of casualties, etc.

R. Silyn Roberts Papers,

A large collection of papers containing letters from various correspondents to R. (Silyn) Roberts, some from prominent literary figures such as W.J. Gruffydd, T. Gwynn Jones and Cynan - one letter from David Lloyd George. The topics covered include the poetry of R. (Silyn) Roberts, his work with the WEA and the Labour Party, and personal matters. Some correspondence is addressed to Mrs Silyn Roberts, 1930-1939 and some from R. (Silyn) Roberts to his family, 1896-1930. -- There is an incomplete set of R. (Silyn) Roberts' diaries, 1896-1930. Also, drafts of his own poetry, essays, adjudications, and notes on various subjects, including his own collections of poetry and his biography. There are notes on sermons, examination papers, research notes on Arthurian Legend, applications for posts, photographs, a labour party address and lecture notes when studying at UCNW and at Bala Theological College. -- There are papers, including correspondence and accounts, relating to the First World War and the suffering experienced in Wales; the poetry of Hedd Wyn and the Hedd Wyn Memorial Fund, 1917-1926; a trip to the United States with the Moelwyn Choir to collect money towards the campaign against tuberculosis in Wales, 1911-1912.

Ifor (Ivor) Leslie Evans - World War I Correspondence

The collection consists almost entirely of correspondence predominately relating to Ifor L. Evans detainment in Germany during the Great War (1914-1918); letters and postcards between Ifor, his parents (Mr W. J. Evans and Mrs M. Evans) and grandmother; letters between Ifor, friends and others; correspondence between Ifor's parents and a range of individuals, mostly with regard to Ifor's situation; a series of letters to Mrs M. Evans from Mary Harold of Brae-Maray, Maeduff. The only material which is not correspondence is a loose selection of newspaper cuttings containing articles on German prisoners of war, as well as a few odds and ends (see series ILE/5 Miscellaneous for more details).
