Pughe family deeds and settlements

Family deeds and settlements of the Pughe family of Mathafarn and of other individuals related to them by birth or by marriage, 1565-1742. There are three files relating to various members of the Pughe family of Mathafarn, Llanwrin, Llwydiarth in Tal-y-llyn, Merioneth, and Aberffrydlan, dated 1565-1614, 1624-1646, and 1662-1742 respectively. One file contains details of settlements by Thomas Pryse of Gogerddan and his wife, Maria Charlotta [nee Pughe], 1742

Misc. Abernantbychan and Llan-gors title deeds and bonds

Title deeds, 1566-1788, relating mainly to the Abernantbychan estate, where the bundles include both Cardiganshire and Pembrokeshire deeds; the properties include Trevane in Tenby, and others in Llangoedmor, Cilgerran, Penbryn, Troed-yr-aur, Llangrannog, Hopshill and St Issells. There are also a few bonds relating to the Llan-gors estate in Breconshire.

Trust deeds of the Pughe family of Mathafarn (misc.)

Deeds and documents relating to miscellaneous trusts involving members of the Pughe family of Mathafarn, either as trustees or as parties to trust deeds of other family members. The two files relate to trusts involving Richard ap Hugh ap Ieuan, Mary Pughe and Richard Pughe, 1566-1654, and William and John Pughe, 1701-1718.

Rug rentals and inquisition into rents

Miscellaneous papers comprising an inquisition into the rents of the Earl of Leicester in the lordship of Denbigh, in which John Salesbury was a commissioner, 1566, and rentals of the Rug estate, 1713, 1743-1744.

Merioneth title deeds

A small number of title deeds found with the Gogerddan estate records, relating to the county of Merioneth. The most substantial of these is a bundle of deeds for three properties in Penaran, Llanuwchllyn, 1616-1658. This series also contains the will of Gruffith ap Ieuan ap Gruffith ap Res, 1568, and the appointment of a collector of arrears in Llanelltud and Llanfachreth, 1675/6

Mathafarn estate mortgages

Mortgages by members of the Pughe family and and associated documents, relating to properties of the Mathafarn estate and the manor of Cyfeiliog, mainly in the parishes of Darowen, Llanbryn-mair, Llanwrin, Machynlleth and Penegoes, Montgomeryshire, and Mallwyd in Merioneth, 1569-1734. One file concerns the Llwydiarth estate in Tal-y-llyn and Pennal, 1578-1621. Some of the properties were mortgaged several times between 1635 and 1718, and these included a capital messuage in Machynlleth, other premises in the townships of Isygarreg and Uwchygarreg, Machynlleth; the capital messuage of Mathafarn, the mills, Bryn Melyn, Keven y Gader, etc. in Llanwrin, Tal yr Henbont, and other properties in Machynlleth; the manor of Cyfeiliog, the ffriths in Cemais, Llanbryn-mair and Darowen, four tenements and the mills upon the premises; Cwm yr Angell or Gartheiniog Farm, and Nant Hir in the parish of Mallwyd, Cefn y Gader in Glynceirig, Llanwrin, a forge at Goeddol, Llanwrin Farm, Gwerne Y Stabley, the corn and fulling mills, etc. in the parishes of Llanwrin and Mallwyd. Later mortgages relate to Gwern y Berethen in Darowen, Llanwrin Farm and Machynlleth properties, 1725-1734.

Mallwyd

Title deeds of houses and lands in the parish of Mallwyd, Merioneth and the townships of Gartheiniog, Cerist and Caereinion Fechan, 1571-1701. The files relate to Tyddyn Llechwedd yr Onn, Maes Y Gamdda and Cwm Rhydynog in Gartheiniog, 1571-1674; miscellaneous houses and lands in Cerist and Gartheiniog, 1572-1636; Tuthyn Tuy yn y Tryvel and Yr Esker Wen, Gartheiniog, 1599-1631; and properties in Caereinion Fechan, 1701.

Miscellaneous legal cases, mainly about Cardiganshire properties

Papers deriving from miscellaneous lawsuits in the Court of the Exchequer, the Court of the Council in the Marches of Wales and other courts, mainly relating to properties in Cardiganshire belonging to the Pryse family of Gogerddan and others, 1574-1682. They include a case brought by the Crown against the inhabitants of Aberystwyth concerning the title of Our Lady’s Mill, 1574-1582. Two files contain cases involving Sir Richard Pryse (d. 1623) and his grandson, Sir Richard Pryse (d. 1651). There is also a royal pardon granted to several persons found guilty of clipping coin, 1682; and a stray paper relating to property belonging to the Buscot Park estate of Edawrd Loveden in Berkshire, [post-1649].

Bonds and other documents relating to financial loans and debts

Various documents relating to the borrowing of money and the payment of debts by members of the Pryse family of Gogerddan, 1577-1912. They include bonds for payment and other acknowledgements of debt, 1577-1860; an acquittance, defeasance of a recognizance and assignments of judgements for debt, 1594-1684; accounts of debts, 1650-1769; and assorted documents concerning financial loans to the Pryse family by banks, individuals and insurance companies, 1900-1912
