Letters, 1955, addressed mainly to T. I. Ellis, relating to securing a knighthood for Dr T. H. Parry-Williams 'for his services to Wales', including letters from Goronwy [Roberts] and James Griffiths. [He was knighted in 1958].

A tune-book containing hymn- and psalm-tunes and anthems, mainly unsigned. The few composers recorded in the volume are John Pugh, Dr. [Edward] Miller, John Williams, Richard Ellis, and William Wilson. The volume may be in the hand of Robert Gwilym (see 561).

Autograph manuscript by Osian Ellis, harpist and composer, of 'Cantilena e Scherzo for String Quartet and Harp' by Gian Carlo Menotti, copied by him from the manuscript and with his detailed markings and corrections and annotations throughout, this being almost certainly the copy used by him in preparation of the first performance. Accomplished in black, blue and purple ink, and pencil. The Cantilena and Scherzo was first performed at Alice Tully Hall (New York, Lincoln Center) on March 15, 1977 by Osian Ellis, James Buswell (violin), Ani Kavafian (violin), Walter Trampler (viola) and Leslie Parnas (cello). The work has its roots in Ravel’s Introduction and Allegro and Debussy’s Danse sacrée et danse profane, but instead of separating the two movements, Menotti frames the Scherzo with the Cantilena’s lyrical material, creating a ternary structure. The very choice of the word ‘Cantilena’ betrays Menotti’s preoccupation with vocal writing, and the result is suitably song-like, full of melodic richness, sustained string writing, and a resonating harp part.

Two ? holograph poems, the first, by Ellis Parry, Pont Saint, entitled 'Penillion A gyfansoddwyd ar fyddygoliaeth R. D. Williams, Esqr., Cyfreithiwr dros bysgodwyr Menai, yn erbyn J. Russel', and the second described as 'Gwaith Ellis ap Hywel yn rhoddi darlyniad ohono ei hun'.

Also included are sketches of a dog, 1878 (f. 31), and of Abergele, 1866 (f. 67).

Music manuscripts, notebooks, papers relating to the National Museum of Wales and the University of Wales, and other miscellaneous material belonging to Dr Mary Davies (1855-1930) and her husband, W. Cadwaladr Davies (1849-1905). Amongst the papers is a later copy of a collection of Welsh airs, compiled and arranged by 'Orpheus' [James James] for the Eisteddfod at Llangollen, 1858 (now NLW Minor Deposit 150B).

A volume, [16 cent., second ½], probably in the hand of Thomas Powell (d. 1588), Parc y Drewen, Whittington, co. Salop, containing a much shortened text of Humphrey Lhuyd's English version of Brut y Tywysogion, upon which version David Powel based his Historie of Cambria, now called Wales ... (London, 1584) (see Brut y Tywysogion ..., ed. by Thomas Jones (Cardiff, 1952), pp. xiv-xviii). Omissions mainly involve passages relating to events outside Wales, church affairs and the papacy, anecdotes, explanations of Welsh personal and place-names, and the arguments against Polydore Vergil. Three other copies are known: BL, MS Cotton Caligula A VI; Oxford, Bodleian Library, Ashmolean Museum MS 847; and NLW, Llanstephan MS 177. Also included are a pedigree of the kings and princes of North Wales from Cadwaladr to Llywelyn ap Gruffudd (ff. iv-v verso), a painted coat of arms of Cadwaladr (f. 1), and an index of personal and place-names (ff. 168-70 verso). Six lines of English verse are added in a contemporary hand on f. 171 verso.

Pedigree of Thomas Morgan (d. 1603) of Tredegar, traced from [Gwrtheyrn] and William the Conqueror, with thirty-four coats of arms, all emblazoned and painted, probably in the hand of Hopcyn ab Einion of Brecon (fl. 17 cent, first ¼), and continued by a later hand to include the pedigree and achievement of Sir William Morgan (d. 1653).
