Llangathen and other Carmarthenshire deeds and documents

Title deeds for properties of an estate lying mainly in the parish of Llangathen and township of Catheiniog, but also including lands in Llansteffan, Dryslwyn, Llandeilo and Pencarreg, 1428-1660. There are some references to the Lewes family of Abernantbychan; others include Vachan, Vichan or Vaughan, Gwilim, Beinon or Eynon, and Rudd of Aberglasney

Merioneth title deeds

A small number of title deeds found with the Gogerddan estate records, relating to the county of Merioneth. The most substantial of these is a bundle of deeds for three properties in Penaran, Llanuwchllyn, 1616-1658. This series also contains the will of Gruffith ap Ieuan ap Gruffith ap Res, 1568, and the appointment of a collector of arrears in Llanelltud and Llanfachreth, 1675/6

Cases of Sir Richard Pryse (d. 1675) and Thomas Pryse

Papers from legal cases involving Sir Richard Pryse of Gogerddan (d. 1675). and his brother Thomas Pryse, 1657-1679. The two most substantial files relate to actions of trespass and ejectment against the Pryses from lands in Aberystwyth, Dynas, Cwm Rheidol, Rhyd Onnen and Llanbadarn Fawr, 1661-1662, and from Bodvage Park and the Lodge, Llangynfelyn, 1662-1679. Other cases concern suit of mill, 1657, and actions for debt, 1666-1673.

Aberbechan estate title deeds

Title deeds of houses and lands belonging to the estate of Aberbechan, Montgomeryshire, in the parishes of Aberhafesb, 1609, Betws Cedewain, 1564-1596, Carno, 1238, 1584-1590, Llanllwchaearn, 1566-1595, Llanwnnog, 1650, and Manafon, 1669-1680, together with miscellaneous bonds and other documents, 1577-1635. Several of the deeds record transactions of John Pryse of Aberbechan and Gogerddan, Edward Pryse, Sir Richard Pryse and the family of his wife, Dame Gwen Pryse, particularly Rees ap Morys ap Owen of Aberbechan. This series contains the earliest document found in the Gogerddan estate records, a gift by Brother Hugh of St Asaph to the Hospital of Jerusalem in Carno, 1238.

Miscellaneous legal cases, mainly about Cardiganshire properties

Papers deriving from miscellaneous lawsuits in the Court of the Exchequer, the Court of the Council in the Marches of Wales and other courts, mainly relating to properties in Cardiganshire belonging to the Pryse family of Gogerddan and others, 1574-1682. They include a case brought by the Crown against the inhabitants of Aberystwyth concerning the title of Our Lady’s Mill, 1574-1582. Two files contain cases involving Sir Richard Pryse (d. 1623) and his grandson, Sir Richard Pryse (d. 1651). There is also a royal pardon granted to several persons found guilty of clipping coin, 1682; and a stray paper relating to property belonging to the Buscot Park estate of Edawrd Loveden in Berkshire, [post-1649].

Mainly copies, extracts and translations (contemporaneous-19 cent.) of items dated temp. John (1199-1216)-1594, but including a group of deeds dated 1587-1684.

Main estate title deeds

Title deeds of the estate of Main or Tre Main in the parish of Meifod, Montgomeryshire, 1545-1684. The files relate to miscellaneous arable lands, and to various houses and lands named Maes y Bont, Maes y Tir Newydd, Gro Meredith Lloyd, The Long Leasow, Y Ty yn y Tyr Calch, Y Wyg, Y Borva Newydd, and the capital messuage of Main, with Y Ty yn y Cwm and another unnamed messuage. The deeds show that estate was purchased by Richard Hunt, a Shrewsbury draper, between 1609 and 1617, and sold by his descendants to Owen Williams of Ystumcolwyn, Montgomeryshire, in 1676. Prior to these purchases, former owners of the properties included the descendants of John Goch, Ieuan ap Me’dd ap Ll’n ap Tuder, Edward ap David ap Ll’n ap Tuder, David Lloyd ap John ap Ieuan ap Owen, Howell ap William, Me’dd David ap Howell and his brothers, Owen Lloyd, Owen David Lloyd and William Benyon. The deeds also show the survival of the mediaeval field system of strips or parcels of land within larger fields at the start of the seventeenth century.

Penegoes and Machynlleth, and Trefeglwys

Title deeds of houses and lands in the parish of Penegoes. 1558-1674, in the combined parishes of Penegoes and Machynlleth, 1606-1695, and in Trefeglwys, 1664-1666. The river Dyfi (Dovey) appears consistently in the boundary clauses. The deeds record several purchases in Penegoes and Machynlleth by the Pughe family of Mathafarn, notably Cae Vownog, Gweirglodd Ledver, Y Borva Las, etc., from Oliver Herbert of Dolforgan, 1634; Kaethgwin or Kae Quin, Llyast Havod Ffraidd, Kae Glas yn Hen Bont, etc., from Richard Danson of St Michaels, Lancaster, 1694/5; and Dolbachoe in Trefeglwys from John Gwyn, 1664-1666. Other personal names include the Pughe family of Dolyrafonddu, Llanwrin, and Ll'n ap Res ap Ieuan ap Gwilkok [of Machynlleth]. The series also contains a lease by Sir Roger Owen of Condover, Salop, of the market tolls of Machynlleth, Melyn y Penrose and fishing rights in the river Dyfi, 1607.

Machynlleth title deeds

Title deeds of houses, tenements and lands in the town and parish of Machynlleth, Montgomeryshire, 1440-1697, and in the townships of Isygarreg, 1560-1683, and Uwchygarreg, 1567-1694. The early deeds provide information about the layout of the town in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, together with the names and occupations of some of the inhabitants, notably in the textile and glove-making trades. Some files record streets which still exist and their earlier alternative names. The deeds record acquisitions mainly by the Pughe family of Mathafarn during the seventeenth century. Other prominent names include Oliver Herbert, the families of Owen, Vaughan and ap Richard/Prichard of Machynlleth, Ll'n ap Res ap Ieuan ap Gwilkoc and his descendants, and occasionally, Owen of Peniarth. Witnesses include bailiffs of the town.
