Letter, 13 January 1977, from R. S. Thomas, Aberdaron, to a Mr Morgan [of ?Leicester], apparently replying to questions about the influences on his poetry and the social and linguistic make-up of his previous and current parishes.

Material relating to a film entitled 'Requiem for a Village', directed by David Gladwell, including correspondence between David Gladwell and George Ewart Evans, 1973-6, with the latter in an advisory capacity regarding the planning, and letters relating to the eventual showing of the film; a typescript plan for the treatment of the film; programmes for the first showing at the nineteenth London film Festival, November 1975; an invitation to attend the première of the film in Ipswich, March 1976; together with reviews.

An autograph letter, dated 17 May 1645, from Prince Rupert, at Newport, [Shropshire], to [Sir Edward Nicholas, secretary of state], [?at Oxford], communicating the news that Montgomery Castle, under Sir John Price [or Pryce] the parliamentary governor, has come over to the Royalists, and that 'the Ennemys have drawne their cannon from Harding [Hawarden] Castle' (f. 28).
Also included is a letter, 30 March 1976, from the military historian Brigadier Peter Young to Anthony S. Gilbert, discussing the letter and tentatively suggesting General Charles Gerard or the Marquis of Worcester as its intended recipient (ff. 29-30). However, Thomas Thorpe's catalogue of autograph letters (1836) identifies the recipient as 'Sir Edw. Nicholes [sic]' and the Prince Rupert letter is endorsed in Nicholas's hand ('Maij. 1645. R[eceived] 21o. P. Rupert to me' on f. 28 verso).

He comments on the needs of young poets learning their craft and gives his opinion on journalists, in response to an article on him in the press, possibly Byron Rogers's 'The Enigma of Aberdaron' (Daily Telegraph Magazine, 7 November 1975, pp. 25-26, 28-29).

The poems are 'Vocation', [1970], 'Alma Mater', 'Dimensions', 'No', 'God's Story', 'The Hand', 'Ann Griffith' and 'Amen', [1972]. However, 'Saunders Lewis', also published in the Spring 1972 number, is not present.

Correspondence, 1955-72, mainly with Faber and Faber, relating to the publication of the Days That We Have Seen and the first and second editions of Ask the Fellows Who Cut the Hay; some letters concerning copyright of title and use of photographs for illustrations.

A typescript carbon copy, dated 18 May 1972, of an abbreviated version of the fourth draft of a history of the Jehu family, originally of Llanfair Caereinion, Montgomeryshire (ff. i, 1-13), along with a photocopy of a manuscript family tree, dated 23 May 1972 (f. 14), both compiled by the donor.

T. Jones, Clerk of Valley Rural District Council, [Anglesey], in response to his enquiry concerning the origin of the name 'Valley'.

A holograph copy, [1971], of David Jones's poem 'A, a, a, Domine Deus', signed 'D.J. c. 1938 & 1966'. The manuscript contains a few minor variants to the final published text, most notably the substitution of 'signum' for 'symbol' (line 5). A substantial marginal note relates to 'certain motifs & the title'.
The poem is written in black ink with the title and certain words in red ink. An early version of the poem was published in the essay 'Art and Sacrament', in Catholic Approaches, ed. by Elizabeth Pakenham (London, 1955), pp. 143-182 (p. 181), and collected in David Jones, Epoch and Artist (London, 1959), pp. 143-179 (p. 179). In its final form it first appeared in Agenda, 5.1-3 (Spring-Summer 1967), 5, and was collected in David Jones, The Sleeping Lord and Other Fragments (London, 1974), p. 9.
