Thirty-one letters and two postcards, 1890-98, to D. Silvan Evans from the Reverend D[aniel] L[ewis] Lloyd, bishop of Bangor, writing from Brecon, Bangor, Llanarth and Eastbourne (church matters, Emyniadur yr Eglwys yng Nghymru, applicants for the curacy of Llanwrin, the writer's health, etc.). Enclosed are letters, 1896, to D. Silvan Evans from J. Jones, Cefn Coed, Merthyr Tydfil, M. Morgan Jones, Llanrug, T. Williams, Llanystumdwy and John T. Evans, Llanelly (2), and to the bishop from John Williams, Llansamlet and D. Watcyn Morgan, Morriston. There are also two letters [1899] to D. Silvan Evans from D. R. (L.) Fifty-eight letters, [1875]-1902, from the Reverend D[avid] Howell ('Llawdden'), Wrexham, Gresford and St Davids, all except two to D. Silvan Evans (personal matters, the 'Geiriadur' and Lady Llanover, a letter from W. Spurrell, Carmarthen (encl.), condolences, the death of [Canon] George Griffiths, the writer's own view of public funerals, how he himself has suffered from 'cliquism', a printed hymn by the writer (encl.), etc.). The other two letters are from D. Howell to Mrs [D. Silvan] Evans, 1887 (Tegid's illness and their own anxiety about Arthur), and to Henry [Silvan Evans], 1898 (a newspaper comment on the application for a Civil List pension for the addressee's father) respectively.

Twelve letters (two damaged), with enclosures and part of another letter, 1869-84, to D. Silvan Evans from Edw[ar]d Hamer, Talywaun and Abersychan (Pontypool) and Llanidloes (the writer's wish to have perfect copies of two poems by Huw Arwystli [sic], the 'Llyfryddiaeth' [i.e. Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry], names of rivers in Montgomeryshire, etc., reference to the Mold Eisteddfod [1873] initiating the movement for the establishment of a National Library).

Fifty-one letters and postcards, etc., 1886-88, to D. Silvan Evans, all except one from H[enri] Gaidoz, Paris, largely concerning material for the Revue Celtique. A few of the letters have been written from places other than Paris, among them Bala, Londres (London), Plouaret, Fontainebleau and Merthyr Tydvil [sic]. The other letter is from E. Muntz, Londres, 1871.

Twenty-six letters and postcards, etc., 1886-[19]01, from J. Gwenogfryn Evans, Oxford and Llanbedrog, twenty five to the Reverend D. Silvan Evans (replying to queries and giving correct readings, the writer's own work, sympathy on the death of Mrs Evans, the Dictionary, asking for permission to catalogue the addressee's Welsh manuscripts, etc.) and one, [18]97, to [J. H. Silvan] Evans (advice concerning the Dictionary).

Eighteen letters to D. Silvan Evans, seventeen of which, 1870-98, are from T[homas] C[harles] Edwards, Liverpool, Aberystwyth and Bala (bibliographical and lexicographical matters, matters in connection with the University College, Aberystwyth, the writer's paper on Salesbury, Dr Lewis Edwards's translation of Cowper's hymn 'God moves in a mysterious way') and one, [18]76, from E. P[enllyn] Jones, University College, Aberystwyth. The last three letters from T. C. Edwards are in another hand except for the signature.

Seventeen letters, 1888-93, to D. Silvan Evans from [the Reverend] T[homas] Briscoe, Holyhead mainly concerning points of translation (Biblical, the Apostles' Creed, etc.), with references also to the non-resident canonry offered to the addressee.

Thirty nine letters, 1873-81, from Edward Breese, Morva Lodge, Portmadoc to D. Silvan Evans, largely concerning books and manuscripts. Reference to what the Council calls the 'revolt' of the staff at Aberystwith [sic], 1879.

Sixty-two letters and two postcards, 1869-83 and undated, to D. Silvan Evans from the Reverend E[dward] L[owry] Barnwell, Melksham, largely concerning Archaeologia Cambrensis, of which D. Silvan Evans was editor, 1871-5. In addition there are three letters to E. L. Barnwell from [the Reverend] Reginald Hughes, Glyn [Ceiriog], 1871, J. H. Le Keux, Durham, 1871, and Richard R. Brash, Cork, 1874, respectively.

Lists of books with prices, offered by D. Williams, London to the Reverend Robert Williams, Llangernyw and Conway. Most of the books are in Welsh or relate to Wales. There are notes, dated 1831-4, appended to three of the lists, relating to books available and books for which the addressee had enquired. A list of 212 Welsh books, published between 1802 and 1890, sent by [Charles Ashton] to [Daniel Silvan Evans], with a note appended (the above list contained all the books not purely theological out of about 600 books which the writer had recorded, he would like to see a copy of the 'Bardd Cwsg' edited by the addressee and also his note in Revue Celtique on Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry.).

A notebook in the hand of D. Silvan Evans containing a list of eighteenth century Welsh printed books 'Had from Myrddin Fardd, July 1, 1881'; a few glossary words; and brief notes on some Carmarthenshie and Cardiganshire river names. There are also some Latin exercises (Nos. [33]-40), presumably in the hand of the original owner of the volume.

Two volumes containing over one hundred and sixty holograph letters and postcards and fragments of letters from B[enjamin] Williams ('Gwynionydd') to D. Silvan Evans ('Hirlas'). The letters are addressed from a variety of places, such as Rhydlewis, Llanfihangel ar Arth, Llangeitho, Llangan, Trefilan, Cenarth, Newcastle Emlyn, Cwmdwr, Abergwennol, Llandovery, Llanddeusant, Penboyr, Pontlottyn and Llanover. The inclusive period of the letters is 1860-91 but the majority are dated within the years 1882-8. The main subjects of discussion are family bereavements and other news, South Cardiganshire pedigrees and biographies, the etymology of place and dialect names, institutions within the Established Church generally of interest to the writer, and day-to-day events and conditions of life and employment at Plas Llanofer. In addition there are copious references to other matters, such as the election of H[enry] Richard ('y dihyryn') for Merthyr [Tudful]; the recipient's edition of Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry; the writer's visits to North Pembrokeshire and South Cardiganshire parishes to examine registers; a proposed second edition of the writer's Enwogion Ceredigion; the writer's activities with the Archaeological Association; the writer's visits to Bronwydd, to St Davids, etc.; the discovery by the writer of an ogham stone at Llandygwydd; news of the family of David Owen ('Brutus'); a new lease of the writer's home at Wenallt, [in Troedyraur]; the library of D.
