A notebook in the hand of D. Silvan Evans containing a list of eighteenth century Welsh printed books 'Had from Myrddin Fardd, July 1, 1881'; a few glossary words; and brief notes on some Carmarthenshie and Cardiganshire river names. There are also some Latin exercises (Nos. [33]-40), presumably in the hand of the original owner of the volume.

A volume in the hand of D. Silvan Evans described on the title-page as 'Lewis Morris's Additions to Dr Davies's Welsh-Latin Dictionary (from autographs) 1879. (The original Copy, once belonging to Lewis Morris, and annotated on by him, is now (1879) in the possession of the Rev. Thomas James, LLD, ['Llallawg'], Vicar of Netherthong, near Huddersfield)'. The scribe has added the following observations: 'The additions, it will be seen, are few, and very unimportant ..', and at the end has recorded the following entry: 'Returned the Copy of Dr Davies's Dictionary lent me by Llallawg, for transcribing the preceding notes, July 30, 1879'.

Two volumes containing over one hundred and sixty holograph letters and postcards and fragments of letters from B[enjamin] Williams ('Gwynionydd') to D. Silvan Evans ('Hirlas'). The letters are addressed from a variety of places, such as Rhydlewis, Llanfihangel ar Arth, Llangeitho, Llangan, Trefilan, Cenarth, Newcastle Emlyn, Cwmdwr, Abergwennol, Llandovery, Llanddeusant, Penboyr, Pontlottyn and Llanover. The inclusive period of the letters is 1860-91 but the majority are dated within the years 1882-8. The main subjects of discussion are family bereavements and other news, South Cardiganshire pedigrees and biographies, the etymology of place and dialect names, institutions within the Established Church generally of interest to the writer, and day-to-day events and conditions of life and employment at Plas Llanofer. In addition there are copious references to other matters, such as the election of H[enry] Richard ('y dihyryn') for Merthyr [Tudful]; the recipient's edition of Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry; the writer's visits to North Pembrokeshire and South Cardiganshire parishes to examine registers; a proposed second edition of the writer's Enwogion Ceredigion; the writer's activities with the Archaeological Association; the writer's visits to Bronwydd, to St Davids, etc.; the discovery by the writer of an ogham stone at Llandygwydd; news of the family of David Owen ('Brutus'); a new lease of the writer's home at Wenallt, [in Troedyraur]; the library of D. A volume in the hand of J. H. Davies containing material on the life and work of Evan Evans ('Ieuan Fardd' or 'Ieuan Brydydd Hir'; 1731-88) mainly in the form of a chronological list of letters by him and some references to him from manuscript and printed sources (Cwrtmawr MS 446, D. Silvan Evans (ed.), Gwaith y Parchedig Evan Evans ... (Caernarfon, 1876) and J. H. Davies (ed.), The Letters of Lewis, Richard, William and John Morris of Anglesey (Morrisiaid Mon) (Aberystwyth, 1907-9). Among the insets are relevant extracts in the hand of William Llewelyn Davies, National Library of Wales from the Panton Papers (NLW MS 9070 ff.).

H. Davies.

Seventy-two holograph letters of John Rhys from Rhyl, Oxford, etc., 1871-84, of which ten, mainly from the period 1871-2, are addressed to J. H. S[ilvan] Evans at Llanymawddwy and the remainder to his father D. Silvan Evans at Llanymawddwy and Llanwrin. Subjects of the correspondence include the writer's appointment as Inspector of Schools in North Flintshire and Denbighshire, the writer's marriage, the Principalship at Aberystwyth [College] (1872), ogham and other inscriptions, Welsh borrowings from classical languages, contributions to Archaeologia Cambrensis, charters belonging to Welsh churches preserved at Canterbury, Mr [Richard Rolt] Brash's contemptuous treatment of the writer, the resignation of the recipient (D. Silvan Evans) as editor of Archaeologia Cambrensis, the writer's appointment to the chair of Celtic at Oxford, the publication of the writer's volume [2nd ed. of Lectures on Welsh Philology, 1879], Welsh words of English origin, Cardiganshire dialects, the writer's desire to examine the Peniarth manuscripts, the position of Welsh at [St David's College] Lampeter, the desire of Mr [E. G. B.] Phillimore to consult the recipient (D. Silvan Evans)'s text of Y Marchog Crwydrad, the recipient (D. Silvan Evans)'s dictionary, copious observations on matters of Welsh etymology, personal, etc. The volume also includes an incomplete copy reply by [D. Silvan Evans], 1874, and an unsigned holograph letter of [E. L. Barnwell], Melksham [1874], both concerned with the controversy between John Rhys and Richard Rolt Brash.

An imperfect interleaved copy of W. Owen Pughe, Geiriadur Cenhedlaethol Cymraeg a Saesneg. A National Dictionary of the Welsh Language [3rd ed., by Robert John Pryse, Denbigh, 1866], with copious annotations and additions, mainly in the hand of Robert Roberts ('Y Sgolor Mawr') and occasionally in the hand of D. Silvan Evans.

A composite manuscript in the hand of D. Silvan Evans containing 'Penillion', numbered 83-93, being a continuation of the series ending on page 111 of Ysten Sioned (Aberystwyth, 1882), and inscribed 'sent off to 89 (inclusive) Dec. 4, 1883' (no. 93 taken from the Oswestry Advertizer, 29 November 1882), together with one additional unnumbered stanza ('The two last line [sic] by D. S. E.'); some Welsh dictionary material, in the form of 'cywydd' couplets and other quotations, illustrating the use of words beginning mainly with the letter C ; and transcripts of free metre poetry by Dafydd o'r Nant and Syr Huw Dafydd ('O Gelli Gaer').

A notebook in the hand of D. Silvan Evans containing an incomplete bibliography of books in Welsh or of Welsh interest classified under the following titles and sub titles:-. I Theology:. 1. According to the list of contents at the beginning of the volume sections were proposed on Music (part of IV), Periodicals (V) and Miscellaneous (VI) but these have not been included. The titles number in all 1096 but there are about 132 blank entries, apparently for the most part intended for later accessions. The latest books recorded in the lists are dated 1839.

Extensive material relating to Welsh bibliography accumulated by, and mainly in the hand of, D. Silvan Evans. It includes a volume entitled 'Bibliotheca Cambrensis. Llyfrofyddiaeth Cymru' ('A[u]ctore Dan. Silvano Evans, Cereticense') (pasted on to the inside lower cover is a holograph letter from the Reverend David Williams, Llanedy Rectory, 1868, giving the entry of baptism of John, son of John Walter, cleric and lexicographer, on 22 August 1721); a home-made notebook entitled 'Llyvryddiaeth Gymreig' (pasted on to the inside lower cover is a note in the hand of Benjamin Williams, ('Gwynionydd')); another home-made notebook entitled 'Emynau detholedig at Wasanaeth yr Eglwys. Rhag. 29, 1862', being a bibliography of Welsh hymnals and relevant source material; copious unbound leaves containing book titles (one of the titles is written on the dorse of a letter from M. A. Lewis, Tredegar Post Office, 1868, requesting the return of the writer's copy of 'Dr. J. D. Rees's Old Grammar'); and letters from John Peter ('Ioan Pedr'), Bala to [Henri] Gaidoz, 1870 (publications not contained in Rowland's work [Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry]), to D. Silvan Evans from W[illia]m Price, Llanffwyst, Abergavenny, 1869 (an addition to Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry), [Robert John Pryse] 'Gweirydd ap Rhys', Bangor, [18]78 (the title of Llyfer Plygain, 1618, transcribed by the writer from a volume examined at the Pengwern [Mostyn] sale in 1874), W[illiam] Rowlands ('Gwilym Lleyn'), Machynlleth, 1862-4 (4) (additions and corrections to [Llyfryddiaeth y Cymru], with references to Evan Evans ('Ieuan Brydydd Hir'), to [Jane] Davies, Penmaen, to W. A thin volume (watermark 1864), variously described as 'Cofnodau Mechain' and 'Mecheinolion', containing biographical and bibliographical notes compiled by D. Silvan Evans towards his edition of Gwaith y Parch. Walter Davies, A. C. (Gwallter Mechain), Cyf I-II (Caerfyrddin ... Llundain, 1868). Towards the end of the volume are the following memoranda: 'Read the last proof (revise) of Gwaith Gwallter Mechain, Jan. 30, 1869, received the last printed sheet, Feb. 5, 1869 ... Received the volumes bound April 10, 1869 (the work being bound by Messrs. Wesley & Co., Friar Street, Doctors' Commons, London), and a short list of subscribers.

An exercise book in the hand of D. Silvan Evans containing 'Attodiad i 'Lyfryddiaeth y Cymry', Gan Olygydd y gwaith hwnw', being a supplement to William Rowlands ('Gwilym Lleyn') (ed. D. Silvan Evans): Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry (Llanidloes, 1869). Among the insets are letters to D. Silvan Evans from E. R. G. Salisbury, Glan-Aber, Chester, 1870-1 (2), and the Reverend D. R. Thomas, St Mary's, Cefn, St Asaph, undated, a bibliographical note in the hand of J. Peter ['Ioan Pedr'], Bala, and copious printed cuttings of book titles.

A notebook in the hand of D. Silvan Evans containing descriptive observations on, and some extracts from, manuscripts of Edward Williams ('Iolo Morganwg') at Llanover Court, Monmouthshire (now in the National Library of Wales, NLW MSS 13061-184). At the beginning of the volume is an index in the hand of J. H. Davies. Inset, in the hand of D. Silvan Evans, is a list of some Llanover manuscripts said to have been examined in some detail ('gyda rhyw faint o fanylder'), 21-26 June 1875.

An incomplete copy in the author's hand of some of the items of verse contained in D. Silvan Evans, Telyn Dyvi (Aberystwyth, 1898). There are some minor differences between this and the printed copy.

A small notebook containing hymn stanzas partly in the autograph of D. Silvan Evans and partly in another hand [? that of John Henry (Silvan) Evans, son of D. Silvan Evans]. The hymns attributed to [Evan Pritchard] 'Ieuan Lleyn' are 'Nesau mae'r dydd - O ddedwydd wawr!' and 'Gweithredoedd Rhagluniaeth' ('Mor amlwg rhyfeddol weithredoedd ....'); in the case of the remainder the author's name is not given.

A volume containing pedigrees transcribed by J. H. Davies mainly from the Golden Grove Book of Pedigrees, L1659-L1675, followed by a number of holograph letters, etc., the details of which are as follows: Samuel Roberts ['S. Heber, place and year not given, to her Aunt Cotton (a farewell message on quitting England), and 'The Peteggree of Cernioge' in the autograph of David Jones, Trefriw, written on the back of a broadside (Trefriw, Argraphwyd gan Dafydd Jones) relating to stray sheep and beginning 'Mae Mr Lloyd o Hafodunos ...'.

A copy of Charles Ashton: Gweithiau Iolo Goch gyda nodiadau hanesyddol a beirniadol (Croesoswallt, 1896), with annotations, some if not all by J. H. Davies. Inside the volume is a notebook probably in the autograph of Charles Ashton containing a list of the poems of Iolo Goch, with particulars of sources, etc., a shorter list in the autograph of D. Silvan Evans with a reference to a manuscript (then at Llanwrin, now Cwrtmawr MS 325) in the autograph of Wiliam Henri [sic] Mounsey, 1859, and a letter, [19]22, from Henry Lewis, Swansea to Principal [J. H.] Davies.

A composite volume (256 pp.) probably put together by J. H. Davies containing material gathered by D. Silvan Evans for Gwaith y Parchedig Evan Evans ('Ieuan Brydydd Hir'), with some additional items (typescript) transcribed by 'T. H. J.' The printed volume appeared in 1876 (Caernarfon: Argraffedig gan H. Humphreys); however, the work had been in progress for a number of years. Pages 1-150 are almost entirely in the autograph of D. Silvan Evans and date from 1853 while pp. 151-226 contain transcripts made in 1861 by 'W. H. M. [i.e. Captain W. H. Mounsey, Carlisle, whose help Silvan Evans acknowledges in the preface to the printed volume]. A sheet addressed to 'Mr John Pryse, Bookseller, Llanidloes' (p. 144) and a possible reference to him by W. H. M[ounsey] (p. 165) suggest a connection between D. Silvan Evans and John Pryse. It is known from Pryse's reprint [1862] of Evan Evans, Some Specimens of the Poetry of the ancient Welsh Bards ..., p. [212] that he intended to publish a volume of 'The Welsh Works of Ieuan Prydydd Hir, (Barddoniaeth, Pregethau, a Llythyrau)' to be edited by 'one of the most eminent Welsh Literateurs'; however, the intention does not seem to have materialised. J. H. Davies has written at the end of the text 'All printed' [referring to the 1876 volume]; this is the case except for pp. 249-251.

A composite volume of poetry in strict and free metre by various poets including Mabclaf ab Llywarch, Aneirin Gwawdrwydd [sic], Evan Evans ('Ieuan Brydydd Hir'), [Robert Williams] 'Robert ab Gwilym Ddu', [David Owen] 'Dewi Wyn', [Griffith Williams] 'Gyttun Peris', [Richard Jones] 'Gwyndaf Eryri', [William Edwards] 'Gwilym Padarn', [Owen Williams] 'Owain Gwyrfai', [Evan Prichard] 'Ieuan Lleyn', [David Thomas] 'D[afydd] Ddu o Eryri', John Davies and Michael Prichard. The contents also include a list headed 'The Names of some of the most Ancient Bards and Historians and the Time wherein [sic] they Flourished'. The lettering on the spine reads 'Llyfr Ieuan Lleyn, 1799' and the volume, except for the last five folios, appears to have been written between 1799 and 1822. The last four folios are partly in the hand of D. Silvan Evans and the folio immediately preceding them is probably earlier in date than 1799 and may belong to Cwrtmawr MS 513B, Part II.
