I have received the schedules from the two Nawabs and subsequently I have submitted details of my previous and present accounts to Mr Hastings and the other Nawab Sahib. He has now collected all revenues and reached Anbuh on the 10th of Bhadun. Because of the illness of my grandmother I had to delay my arrival there. I therefore sent Divan Ramchand and his assistants to Burdwan to arrange for the payments of wages of the soldiers and write to me. However, Rajah Rajbalab Sahib did not have the fifty thousand rupees he was required to pay. He has referred the matter to Murshidabad saying that he used to pay two Lac rupees to the two persons every year. The two officials have also written their statements and have sent them to Murshidabad. I am sending today, 4th of Katak, one Lac and twelve thousand rupees. It may be added to treasury according to the Chalan. I am completely bound by my circumstances but in spite of that and in spite of fact that it is the festival of Dushehra and all my employees have gone home to celebrate this festival I went round personally and arranged for this instalment. I have day and night no other worry but how to send the instalment in time. For this I work hard day and night. Because of this I had to recall my staff on the morning of Dusehra and ask them to despatch the above amount so that it reaches you in time for the payment of wages. I can assure you that I do not leave any stone unturned in order to accomplish this task.

I have already conveyed to you details of my sad circumstances. Today, 15th Katak (i.e. November 6th?) the Chothi Thakurani, that is the wife of the Maharajah Sahib accompanied the funeral out of the palace walls and brought it to a designated place at the banks of Ganges. I am also at present staying at the same place. I am planning to proceed to Murshidabad from here.

Since they day you arrived at Murshdabad the chief of traders has, two or three times, sent me an invitation but because of my physical condition I have not been able to avail this oppurtunity and travel to Murshidabad at such a short notice. I am at present feeling very weak and hope that by the time you visit Murshidabad again I will have recovered from my illness and be able to pay my respects.

You had written to me asking me to allow the samples of cloths belonging to the [East India]Company to be sent to the Nawab Sahib. As a matter of fact there was no permit with these cloths and it was being sent under the name of Ami Chand. As your instructions were that I should not allow any merchandise to be moved from here without the permit of the Company I had stopped the delivery of those cloths. Now that I have received your letter, I will make an exception to this rule but I hope that they will not do this again.

Just to let you know that after leaving your company I reached safely at Murshidabad at mid-day, Friday, 26 Dhu al-Hijjah.

Some of your messengers who had come this way to look for Mir Zain al-Abidin had informed that he was staying in Benares so that he could prevent me, Sukha Ram Pandit, to come and see you. Although I had sent him a message asking him not to travel as the roads were not safe and elephant and horses belonging to Odepuri Gosain, who was travelling in this area, were taken away from him by Raja Ajit Singh. However, the aforesaid Mir did not believe this and moved on. Meanwhile, I went to the river bank/Ghat and heard that Raja Vije Singh of Maulaganj had confiscated all belongings of Mir and had asked him to pay five thousand rupees if he wanted them back. He, with great difficulty, managed to provide only one thousand rupees and a horse. Later, two guards belonging to Raja Ajit Singh came there and took him into custody. We do not know what happened next and on what terms he was released. From here he is now travelling via Allahabad and will soon come to see you.

I had arrived here as a representative of Maharajah Januji Sahib Bahadur to discuss with you some outstanding issues between our states, but when I reached here I came to know that you had already left for Calcutta. Because of this I went to see Maharajah Shitab Rae and asked him to arrange a meeting with Navab Muin al-Daulah Bahadur as soon as possible. When I went to see the Navab I told him about the letter I had brought for you; he asked me to send this letter to you and he asked me to stay here until a reply to this letter is received from you. Initially I did not agree to this proposal but the Navab was able to persuade me to send this letter to you. He is also sending his vakil to Deccan to negotiate with Maharajah Januji. I was hoping to accompany this vakil but cannot do so until I receive a reply to my letter. I am sure the Navab Sahib and the Maharajah must have sent you further details about the purpose of my visit.
