Fishing and shooting papers

Papers relating to sporting on lands belonging to Wynnstay, namely unlawful fishing in the river Tanat and in the Dovery fishery within the manor of Cyfeiliog, and agreements for shooting at Llangollen and on the Llwydiarth estate, 1877-1928.

Wynnstay estate letter books

An original series of volumes containing typescript copies of letters sent out from the office of Longueville and Co. on behalf of the Wynnstay estate, 1928-1957. The letters are addressed to the Wynnstay estate agents, other solicitors’ firms, private individuals, Wrexham Rural District Council, Denbighshire County Council, Machynlleth Urban District Council, Ceiriog Rural District Council, Cefn Mawr Parish Council, Penllyn Rural District Council, the County Council of Salop, utility companies, mining agents, land agents, the Coal Commission, insurance companies, banks, vicars, St Asaph Diocesan Registry, the War Agricultural Executive Committee (WAEC), the Inland Revenue, the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, the Forestry Commission, members of the Williams Wynn family and the trustees. The contents reflect the routine work of the solicitors’ practice, referring to estate sales and purchases; leases; financial management under the Wynnstay family trusts; tithe rent charges and chief rents; charities; sporting rights; mineral rights; manorial rights; and sales of Wynnstay land for housing, public utilities, amenities and commercial purposes. Most of the transactions concern the main Wynnstay estate and Llangedwyn estate in Denbighshire, Machynlleth, Cemais and Llanbryn-mair in Montgomeryshire, Llanuwchllyn and Bala in Merioneth, and Llanforda and Trefonnen near Oswestry, Salop. Notable land sales include Plas Kynaston Hall and estate, 1935-1947, 1951. Purchases include the Bryngwalia estate, Denbighshire, 1951-1954. Projects involving former Wynnstay lands are Liverpool Corporation waterworks and the Vyrnwy Aqueduct, 1930-1936, the Great Western Railway and Plas Madoc Branch, 1930-1934, the Swansea to Manchester Trunk Road, 1953, 1957, and the Dovey Valley Water Scheme, 1954-1957. Some of the contents demonstrate the local effects on the Wynnstay estate of various Acts of Parliament, such as the Housing Acts 1930, 1936 and 1949, the Tithe Act 1936, the Coal (Registration of Ownership) Act 1937, the Coal Acts 1938 and 1943, the Hill Farming Act 1946, the Town and Country Planning Acts 1947 and 1954, the Agricultural Holdings Act 1948; National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949; and the effects of the Second World War such as Defence Regulations 1939-1946, requisitioning by the WAEC, 1943, and the evacuation of [Hawtreys] School to Llangedwyn Hall, 1944-1946. Letters following the deaths of Sir Herbert Lloyd Watkin Williams Wynn in May 1944 and his son, Watkin Williams Wynn in May 1949, discuss the subsequent legal business under the terms of the will and the family trusts; recurrent themes are the separate trust of the Llanbryn-mair estate, death duties and the family heirlooms. The financial decline of the Wynnstay estate is perceptible in the negotiations for the sale of Llwydiarth, Glan-llyn, Aberhirnant, part of the Cefn estate, Eglwyseg, Erbistock Hall, Wynnstay Hall and its contents, Llandysilio Moor, Plas Isa, parts of the Llangedwyn and Llanforda estates, and many other individual properties, 1944-1957; the demolition of Llanforda mansion is recorded, 1949.

Miscellaneous Wynnstay (Longueville) files

Files of unsorted papers from the office of Longueville and Co. relating to the Wynnstay estate, 1717-1909. Many of the papers concern purchases, sales and exchanges of property in Denbighshire, Merioneth, Montgomeryshire and Salop, mainly in the mid-nineteenth century. Typically they include draft deeds, abstracts, particulars, plans, valuations and conditions of sale. Some deeds relate to disentailment and the release of encumbrances on parts of the Wynnstay settled estates prior to sale, and to the right of the trustees to sell. Several documents concern the sale of Wynnstay land for railway development schemes and for water supply, such as the Vyrnwy water supply under the Liverpool Corporation Waterworks Act 1880. Several of the bundles contain papers of Watkin Edwards Wynne of Llewesog and of Owen Wynne, his brother and executor, 1785-1800. Other recurrent themes include the manorial rights of Sir Watkin Williams Wynn in the manor of Cyfeiliog, the sale of timber from the Wynnstay estates, Wynnstay finances, and the work of the trustees for the purposes of the estate sales and purchases. Several files contain statements of conveyances of parts of the Wynnstay estates and trustees’ accounts, 1858-1860. Most files contain routine accounts and correspondence of Longueville and Co., of the Wynnstay agents and other interested parties.

Expired tenancy agreements and associated papers, Llwydiarth, Llangedwyn and other Montgomeryshire estates,

Bundles which appear to form an original sequence of expired tenancy agreements and associated papers, firstly of the Llwydiarth estate and the Montgomeryshire portion of Llangedwyn, for properties and sheepwalks situated mainly in the parishes of Garthbeibio, Hirnant, Llanerfyl, Llanfair Caereinion, Llanfihangel-yng-Ngwynfa, Llanfyllin, Llangadfan, Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, Llanwddyn and Pennant [Melangell]. From nos. 1010 onwards they also include the Mathafarn, Tirymynech and Rhiwsaeson estates, filed in the same numerical sequence, covering the parishes of Carno, Cemais, Darowen, Llanbryn-mair, Llangurig, Llanwrin, Machynlleth, Penegoes and Trefeglwys. There are 10 files of numbered expired tenancy agreements for Llwydiarth and Llangedwyn, nos 101-999 (with gaps) dated 1839-1927, one file for Llwydiarth, Llangedwyn, Mathafarn, Tirymynech and Rhiwsaeson, nos 1001-1100 (with gaps) dated 1858-1920, and 4 files for Mathafarn, Tirymynech and Rhiwsaeson, nos 1102-1431 (with gaps) dated 1861-1927; also expired unnumbered tenancy agreements from Llwydiarth and Llangedwyn, 1839-1871; agreements of farms sold, Llangedwyn estate, 1843-1858; old agreements to Lady Day 1862, Llwydiarth estate, 1843-1861; agreements of tenements sold, Llwydiarth estate, 1845-1858, 1922; old agreements to Lady Day 1862, Llangedwyn estate, 1848-1859; notices to quit tenancies, Llwydiarth and Mathafarn estates, 1862; and sporting leases, 1889-1929.

Miscellaneous papers deriving from administration of the Arwystli and Cyfeiliog estates, comprising estate correspondence, 1784-1873; Dyfi (Dovey) fishery receipts, balance sheets, etc., 1789-1913; forestry time book, sale notices, etc., 1820-1874; an agreement for making bricks, 1863; a game book of the Llanbryn-mair estate, 1868-1891; and particulars of farms, 1907.

Agents’ correspondence (main series),

Bundles of correspondence filed by the Wynnstay agents, Samuel Sidebotham, 1777-1789, and William Parry Richards, 1808-1813. Two of the files consist exclusively of letters from Sir Watkin Williams Wynn, 4th Bart., and his wife, Lady Charlotte, 1783-1789. Other regular correspondents include Francis Chambre and Jonathan Barff of Oswestry, John Evans of Llwynygroes, and Edward Jones [?steward] of St James’s Square. The letters concern routine administration of the estate and household, the private life of Sir Watkin Williams Wynn, coal mining enterprises in Wrexham, Ruabon, Gwersyllt, Rhosllanerchrugog and Trefarclawdd, possession of the small tithes of Wrexham, the living of Llanuwchllyn, a new church gallery and staircase by [?George] Wilkinson, appeals for charity or personal assistance, the Denbighshire election, 1784, and political, social and local news. Many of the letters reflect the personal interests of the fourth baronet, describing the landscaping and improvements at Wynnstay by John Evans, [?John] Midgley, [George] Wilkinson and James Wyatt; the Handel commemoration in 1784, subsequent concerts in Westminster Abbey, and the baronet’s increasing financial difficulties. The file of later letters, 1808-1813, shows the 5th baronet’s more systematic approach to financial affairs and the practical management of the estates, mainly in Denbighshire, Montgomeryshire and Bala.

Scope and content: Records deriving from mining enterprises mainly in Montgomeryshire and to a lesser extent in Cardiganshire, comprising leases of mines in Llanidloes, 1739-1777; leases of mines in Llanbryn-mair, Penegoes and Darowen, 1775-1786; leases of mines in Darowen, Trefeglwys, Llangurig and Llanidloes, 1776-1787; royalty returns book (lead, copper and slate), 1855-1878; reports on lead mines in Montgomeryshire, 1871-1872; royalty returns book (lead mines), 1877-1891; and an agreement permitting a search for minerals in Marchnadd Issa, 1883.

Letters to Sir William Williams of Llanforda,

Letters to Sir William Williams of Llanforda from James Evans in Gray’s Inn, 1701-1704; various business and social acquaintenances, 1705-1733; his son, Watkin Williams Wynn, 1706-1735; his son, Robert Williams, 1709-1737; miscellaneous family members, 1711-1727; his daughter, Sidney Wynne, 1714-1735; his son, Richard Williams of Penbedw, 1717-1730; and his brother, John Williams of Chester, 1727. The letters provide a view into the private affairs of this influential family, their position in Welsh gentry society, and their involvement in local life and in parliamentary politics during the early Hanoverian period. Recurrent family topics include the death of Sir John Wynn, Sir William Williams’s second marriage, 1719, and private financial arrangements.

Papers, probably in their original bundles, deriving mainly from the election of a burgess to represent the borough of Montgomery in Parliament and concerning the corrupt practices employed in the procedure. The files comprise lists of burgesses in Llanfyllin, Montgomery and Welshpool, 1657-1679; election returns of the borough of Montgomery, 1661-1727; miscellaneous petitions relating to election of a burgess to represent Montgomery, 1679-1689; election returns of Edward Vaughan, MP, 1679-1705; the case and petition of Charles Herbert, 1685; and the case and petition of Robert Williams, 1727. Several of the cases and petitions are accompanied by copies of earlier documents to provide evidence of precedents, 1545-1685.
