Cases iof Lewis Lewis of Doleclettwr and other miscellaneous cases

Papers from miscellaneous legal disputes involving various individuals in Cardiganshire, 1727-1744. The most prominent of these involve Lewis Lewis of Doleclettwr, mainly in connection with debts and actions of trespass and ejectment, 1727-1732. One file contains cases against Thomas Powell of Nanteos at the time of the violent election at Cardigan in 1729. Other cases concern claims to the estate of Anthony Ball of Llanfair and late of Lodge Park, 1732-1734, matters affecting the estate of George Jones of Rhoscellan, 1732-1744, and a dispute over a seat in Llangynfelyn church, 1734-1736.

Cases of Dame Dorothy Pryse and Edward Pryse

Papers deriving from lawsuits heard in the Chancery division of the Court of Great Sessions for Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire and Cardiganshire, 1661-1711, involving Dame Dorothy Pryse of Bodvage Park (Lodge Park) and Edward Pryse of Llanvread, as executors of Sir Thomas Pryse, deceased, and subsequently involving Lewis Pryse. The majority of the cases concern the recovery of debts due to or owed out of the estate of Thomas Pryse. The most substantial files record an action by the executors against Sir Hugh Middleton, Sir Carbery Pryse, infant (per John Herbert his guardian) and William Wogan, 1661-1683; and a case brought by Martin de Carbonell and Justina his wife against Edward Pryse, Dame Dorothy Pryse and others, and subsequently by Carbonell’s executors, John Bontanden,, John Guerrier and Paul Jodrell, against Lewis Pryse, 1696-1711. Another file relates to claims for a debt due to Alice Lewis of Abergwili, 1685-1696.

Papers relating to complaints by George Jones of Rosgillan (Rhoscellan), Cardiganshire, firstly against Catherine Chichester of Arlington, Devon and other defendants, about a lease of the rectories and tithes of Llanbadarn Fawr and Aberystwyth, Llanfihangel Castell Gwalletr, Llanychaearn and other parishes in Cardiganshire, 1732; and secondly against James Lewes and Mr [Alexander] Gordon for their endeavours to cut a watercourse on George Jones’ estate at Dole without orders from Thomas Pryse, describing previous alleged misdemeanours, 1744

Cases of John Pryse, Thomas Pryse, John Pughe Pryse and Walter Pryse

Papers deriving from lawsuits and other legal matters involving John Pryse of Glanmeryn, Montgomeryshire, his son Thomas Pryse of Gogerddan, Thomas’s son John Pughe Pryse, and Walter Pryse [of Painswick], [1712x1717] -1755, and office copies, 1860. The most substantial of these concern a dispute between Walter Pryse and Lord Lisburne of Trawsgoed over the boundaries of Grogwynion lead mine, 1741-1751. Other files relate to the inheritance of the Gogerddan estate, 1720, 1749-1754, disputes over property and trespass in Llanglydwen, Carmarthenshire, [1712x1717]] and Llanbadarn Fawr, Cardiganshire, 1739-1744, and cases between John Pughe Pryse and his mother pertaining to his inheritance of the Gogerddan estate, 1753-1755. There are also two items of interest relating to the town of Aberystwyth, one being the case against William James for usurping the office of mayor, 1731, the other concerning the custom of suit of mill at Our Lady’s Mill, 1743-1744

Papers deriving from lawsuits involving Lewis Pryse of Gogerddan, concerning fishing rights on the river Rheidol, the possession of lands in Llanbadarn Fawr, and a fine and recovery of the Gogerddan estate, 1718-[c.1719]

Cases of Lewis Pryse (d. 1779), Margaret Pryse and Edward Loveden Loveden

Papers mainly from legal cases involving Lewis Pryse of Woodstock and Gogerddan, his widow Margaret Pryse, and Edward Loveden Loveden, husband of Lewis Pryse’s daughter, also named Margaret, [post-1753]-1792, and later notes, 1828. They include actions of trespass and ejectment to recover the mines at Esgair Fraith, 1772-1781, and Cwmsymlog, 1791; and actions in replevin, brought by Mathew Davies against agents of the Pryse’s tenant at Bwlchystyllen, 1784-1828. Other disputes concern financial issues between Edward Loveden Loveden and Samuel Wilson Warneford, trespasses on the Gogerddan estate, the title to a mill and debts owed to Thomas Lewes..

Cases of Pryse Pryse and Pryse Loveden

Papers from lawsuits and other legal matters involving Pryse Pryse of Gogerddan, his son, Pryse Loveden (d. 1855) and the latter’s son, also named Pryse Loveden (later Sir Pryse Pryse). The most substantial file consists of papers from several cases of trespass in the manor of Genau’r-glyn, culminating in an action brought in the Court of Queen’s Bench by Mathew Davies of Tanybwlch against Pryse Loveden in 1860,, together with documents used in evidence, 1852-1860, and papers from the subsequent enclosure award, 1861-1869. Several other cases variously concern turbary rights, rights of way, watercourses, mineral prospecting and encroachments in the manor of Genau’r-glyn, in the parish of Llanbadarn Fawr, Cardiganshire, and at Gwerglodd-y-Kippill in Montgomeryshire and Tywyn, Merioneth, 1817-[c. 1862]. There are also cases and opinions relating to family matters and trusts such as the will of Edward Loveden Loveden and adoption of the surnames Pryse and Loveden, 1823-1855, the custody of Mary Smith, 1827-1828, and the guardianship of the children of Pryse Loveden, 1855-1858.

Cases of Sir Pryse Pryse

Papers deriving from various lawsuits and other legal matters involving Sir Pryse Pryse of Gogerddan, 1826-[post-1908]. The most substantial file concerns a dispute in the Court of the Exchequer between the Crown, represented by the Attorney General, and Sir Pryse Pryse over the entitlement to lands and minerals in the crown manor of Perfedd in 1863-1864, together with stray papers relating to the manor of Genau’r-glyn and Braichgarw Common, 1826-1896. Other papers concern Edward Pryse’s bill in Chancery respecting Llanerchclwydie mine and Brynmawr Common, 1857; a declaration on the marriage of Pryse Pryse and Jane, sister of William Cavallier, 1860; the trusts of the will of John Lewes, 1861; an ejectment of David Davies of Llandinam from Gwernerin Farm, Montgomeryshire, 1867; the foreclosure of the mortgages on Cwmsymlog, 1873-1888; and several cases of debt or bankruptcy, one of which was John Humphreys of Rhydtir Issaf, 1893-1894.

Cases of Sir Richard Pryse (d. 1675) and Thomas Pryse

Papers from legal cases involving Sir Richard Pryse of Gogerddan (d. 1675). and his brother Thomas Pryse, 1657-1679. The two most substantial files relate to actions of trespass and ejectment against the Pryses from lands in Aberystwyth, Dynas, Cwm Rheidol, Rhyd Onnen and Llanbadarn Fawr, 1661-1662, and from Bodvage Park and the Lodge, Llangynfelyn, 1662-1679. Other cases concern suit of mill, 1657, and actions for debt, 1666-1673.

A statement and an affidavit from cases in the County Court of Cardiganshire at Aberystwyth, concerning respectively the estate of bankrupt Richard Jones, 1886, and a debt owed by John Jenkins of Penrhyn-coch to Sir Pryse Pryse of Gogerddan, [post-1889].

Items of interest include the opposing claims of the Hughes family to the Trefan and Hafodgaregog estates, Merioneth, 1809; a dispute between Dr Rees Williams against Rees Jones concerning land at Morfa Swnd, Aberystwyth, 1825; and trespasses on Cors Fochno, 1835.
