Transcripts by Thomas Richards and David Richards, etc.

A composite volume comprising three exercise books and insets largely in the hands of Thomas Richards, Darowen and David Richards, Llansilin. The contents include a list of names, ages and dates of death of 176 eminent ecclesiastics ('Cofrestr o Enwau, Oedran ac amser marwolaeth y Gwyr enwog canlynol ... '); a tract, 1753 (transcribed 1822), explaining the reasons for the adoption in Great Britain in 1752 of the Gregorian or New Style Calendar ('... y Rhesymmau amlycaf paham y gwnaed y cyfnewidiad diweddar yn y Flwyddyn, ydys yn alw yr Ysteil newydd'); short biographies of early and late British historians ('Ychydig o hanes yr Awdwyr mwyaf hynod a ysgrifennasant am y Brutaniaid yn yr Ynys hon yn gynar ac yn ddiweddar ...'), based on Joshua Thomas: Hanes y Bedyddwyr, Ymhlith y Cymry... (Caerfyrddin, 1778); 'Ymddiddan Myrddin a Gwenddydd' and prophecies attributed to Myrddin and Taliesin; prophetic poetry ('cywyddau', etc.) by Dafydd Llwyd Llewelin ap Griffydd, ?Griffidd ap Dafydd Fychan, Robin Ddu, Owain Twna, Dafydd Gorllech, Ifan Brydydd hir, Huw Pennant, Edwart [ap Rhys], Dr Sion Cent, Ie[uan] Dyfi, Iolo Goch, ?Meredith ap R[hys], Llywelin ap Owain, Rhys Goch or Yri, Thomas Prys (Plas Iolyn), etc.; 'englynion' by Davydd Richard ('D[ewi] Silin') and [John Jones] ('Myllin'); Awdl i'r olygfa o ben clochdy St Paul, Llundain, 1825, by [William Williams] ('Gwilym Cyfeiliog); 'Awdl Ymweliad ei Fawrhydi Sior y Pedwerydd ag ynys Fon' by [William Ellis Jones] ('G[wilym] Cawrdaf') (said in an accompanying note by Mary Richards to be in the hand of Evan Evans ('Ieuan Glan Geirionydd'); 'Coelbren y Beirdd'; a table of first lines of 'cywyddau', etc. by mediaeval Welsh bards; a list of titles of books of Welsh poetry and pedigrees, etc. The first exercise book, belonging to Thomas Richards, is dated 1814 and the second and third, belonging to David Richards, 1811-14?

Transcripts of letters,

A volume containing copies in the autograph of Owen Jones ('Manoethwy') of twenty letters, 1824-35, from John Blackwell ['Alun'], writing from Mold, Oxford, Berriew, Kerry, Holywell and Cardigan, chiefly to [the Reverend Thomas] Richards, Berriew and Llangynyw, and, to a lesser extent, to John Hamer, the Reverend Lewis Richards, Berriew, the Reverend E. Davies, Llan merewig and the Reverend Thomas Richards, Darowen. Two of the letters written from Oxford to the Reverend Lewis Richards contain letters also from John Antes La Trobe and J. Hamer in the one instance and J. Hamer in the other. Other items include a copy of a list of subscribers towards the education of John Blackwell of Mold, 1824, and copies of two other letters -, one, 1823, from R[ichard] Richards to his brother, [Thomas] Richards, Berriew, the other, 1827, from Evan Evans, ('Glan Geirionydd'), Christleton to Mr Richards, Llangynyw [i.e. Thomas Richards]. Some of the letters and the list of subscribers have been printed in Adgof Uwch Anghof. Some of the original letters are in Cwrtmawr MSS 74 and 872 and the list of subscribers is in Cwrtmawr MS 869.

Tune book,

Tune book, watermarks 1812, of Evan Evans ('Ieuan Glan Geirionydd', 1795-1855), containing psalm-tunes, hymn-tunes and anthems. The volume includes 'Ton y Meudwy wedi ei hysgrifenu a phwyntel gan E. Evans ai hadysgrifo mor gywir ac y gellio ac inc gan G Cowlyd' (ff. 23 verso-24 recto).

A copy of Evan Evans, Y Seraph, sef casgliad o donau crefyddol, ar amrywiol fesurau (Caerlleon & Llundain, 1838) in three parts, bound with a manuscript tune book, middle of the nineteenth century, containing anthems with accompanying Welsh words, including 'Teyrnasoedd y Ddaear' by J. Ambrose Lloyd (ff. 5 verso-9).

Vocabularies,

A small notebook bearing the name of 'Evan Evans, Trefriw, Carnarvonshire' [i.e. 'Ieuan Glan Geirionydd'; 1795-1855] containing Welsh, Greek and Latin vocabularies. The cover appears to be part of printed proposals for a Family Bible, 1814, and the contents appear to be of about the same date.
