Pryse family probate records and settlements

Family deeds and documents of the Pryse family of Gogerddan, Woodstock and Buscot Park, comprising probate records, 1584-[19]16, and family deeds and settlements, 1549-1932. They include records of branches of the Pryse family of Glanfread, Ynysgreigog, Glanmeryn and Aberllefenni, and of Loveden of Buscot Park.

Gogerddan tithes, taxation and poor rate records

Records of tithes, 1749-1929, taxation, 1803-1929, and poor rates, 1899-1922, due on the Gogerddan estate in the parishes and townships in the Aberystwyth area. The tithe records comprise mainly extracts from the tithe apportionments, lists or schedules of the tithe rent charges, valuations, accounts and routine coorespondence. The other records in this section comprise mainly assessments and demand notices for both taxes and the poor rate, tax returns and objections to the poor rate valuation.

Papers relating to county administration in Montgomeryshire, 1603-1661, 1893-1929, Merioneth, 1580-1740, Breconshire, Herefordshire, Pembrokeshire and miscellaneous Welsh counties, 1607-1859, which reflect the public role of the families of Pryse of Gogerddan, Pughe of Mathafarn, Salesbury of Rug and Lewis [of Llan-gors] within those counties. The section includes a number of seventeenth century documents pertaining to the office of sheriff, deputy lieutenant and other county officials

Gogerddan household administration papers

Household administration papers, mainly from the Gogerddan estate but also occasionally naming London residences occupied by the Pryse family, 1668-1928. They include household accounts, bills and receipts, 1668-1925; household inventories from Gogerddan and London, 1744-1917; recipes, [18th cent.]-1844; and miscellaneous household papers comprising advertisements, medical prescriptions and a visitor book, 1848-1928.

Gogerddan estate letter books and postage books : outgoing correspondence

Gogerddan estate letter books, containing copies of the outgoing correspondence of the Pryse family and their agents, 1851-1925 (some years missing); and postage books, recording letters sent, 1904-1920. The letters concern mainly the routine administration of the Gogerddan estates but also some family and personal matters. They are described in detail at series level.

Gogerddan agency and tenancy papers

Papers deriving from the routine daily work of the Gogerddan agents and from the system of tenancy used on the estate. The documents include agents’ notebooks and work papers, 1810-1925; notifications to tenants, landlord and bailiff, 1851-1918; and registers and schedules of leases, (Watermark 1853)-1913.

Caernarfonshire deeds and documents

Title deeds and other documents relating to properties belonging to the Brogyntyn estate in Caernarfonshire, 1813-1924. There are four series, comprising leases of parts of Borth-y-gest farm, Ynyscynhaearn, for building plots, 1847-1924; miscellaneous deeds and documents for properties in Cricieth, Dolbenmaen, Llanfihangel-y-Pennant, Llanystumdwy, Morfa Bychan, Penmorfa, Treflys and Ynyscynhaearn, 1813-1909; licences and leases of mines and quarries in Caernarfonshire, 1845-1890; and licences for Ereiniog Peat and Brick Works, 1871-1883.

Poor law records of Penbryn parish, 1786-1787; Aberystwyth Union, 1836-(postmark 1924); and Berriw parish, 1832-1843, and Machynlleth Union, 1921, in Montgomeryshire, found in the Gogerddan estate records

Gogerddan shooting and game records

Shooting and game records of the Gogerddan estate, comprising game books and lists, 1804-1920s; and miscellaneous papers relating to gamekeeping and sporting rights, notably the control of poaching and vermin, sporting leases and agreements, and appointments of gamekeepers, 1814-1924.

Main Gogerddan tenancy agreements and leases

Tenancy agreements and leases (including memoranda and drafts), 1739-1924, for houses and lands situated in the parishes and townships of Eglwys-fach (Ysgubor-y-coed), Llanbadarn Fawr, Llanfihangel Genau’r-glyn, Llangorwen (from 1864), and Llangynfelyn in north Cardiganshire, and Machynlleth in Montgomeryshire. The years 1861 and 1864 each include additional files of arbitration agreements and valuations, and other related documents found with them. There are also numerous notices to quit, both to and by tenants of the estate.

Cardiganshire mining and quarrying records

Records mainly of the lead, silver and copper mines belonging to the Gogerddan estate in North Cardiganshire, at Allt y Crib, Blaenceulan, Bronfloyd, Bryn yr Afr, the Bog, Camdwr Bach, Camdwr Mawr, Cwmsymlog, Darren, Eaglebrook, Esgair Hir, Esgair Fraith, Hafan and Henfwlch, the Island, Loveden Mine, South Darren, Taliesin and the Vaughan Mines, mainly in the parishes of Llanbadarn Fawr, Llanfihangel Genau’r-glyn and Llangynfelyn, Grogwynion in the parish of Llanafan and numerous other locations. These papers often incorporate records of the stone quarries at Hafan, Cwmere, Pentalwr, Penrhyngerwyn, Penglais and other sites. The various series comprise ore weighing tickets, 1850-1862; tack (take) notes, 1732-1924; bargain books, 1825-1851; miscellaneous Gogerddan mining accounts, 1668-1918; mining ledgers, 1875-1918; mining receipt books, 1897-1918; Gogerddan and East Darren mining cost books and ledgers: 1842-1894; royalty returns, 1774, 1838-1910; leases and agreements, 1656-1918; mining surveys, reports, prospectuses, etc., 1670-1923; letters, 1697-1920; and sale catalogues, 1882-1915.

Gogerddan letters: specific correspondents

Letters mainly to the Pryse and Loveden family of Gogerddan, Buscot Park and Woodstock or their representatives, from specific correspondents, namely Charles Deare of the Inner Temple, 1803-1843, James Morse of Carmarthen and others involved in his case, 1831-1855,, and Boys and Tweedie, solicitors, of Ely Place and Lincolns Inn Fields, 1845-1924, whose files have also preserved the outgoing letters originally sent to them by the Pryses. The solicitors’ letters concern mainly the Pryse family settlements and trusts, provision for the family widows and younger children, estate purchases and sales, mortgages, and the financial management of the Buscot Park, Woodstock and Gogerddan estates. The letters and papers of James Morse discuss his case as a defaulter to the Crown but they also provide insights into his career and his involvement in Cardiganshire politics in the mid-nineteenth century. There is also a single file of letters to Charles Hayes, Deputy Governor of the Royal African Company, 1733-1748.
