Alan Bullock, St Catherine's Society, Oxford. T. J. Morgan of Cardiff has suggested that the writer contact Huw T. Edwards for assistance with the life of Ernest Bevin which he is writing. Is especially anxious for information on EB's early life. He is unable to read Welsh himself, and so cannot make use of Huw T. Edwards's autobiography.

Loti [Rees Hughes], Hafodlasau, 29 Heol Goffa, Llanelly. Thanks for Huw T. Edwards's kind words about the Newtown meeting and the inspiration about television. Has enjoyed reading Tros y Tresi. Received a word the previous day from Sir Grismond Phillips who had recently met Huw T. Edwards. Enquires whether there is any chance of getting 'Codi Cwestiwn' on the air again. Congratulations on Huw T. Edwards's most recent honour. Welsh.

Thomas Parry, Librarian of the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth. Has greatly enjoyed Tros y Tresi. Congratulations on the contents and the lively style. Huw T. Edwards clearly has the makings of a writer. Has also read Silyn by David Thomas. Both works act as a mirror of the development of the Labour movement in North Wales. Is struck by the high idealism which inspired the movement's leaders, notably the thirst for learning. Much laments that the unions have lost that idealism in the intervening years. But all movements later lose the heat which inspired them in their early years. Welsh.

T. Lloyd Roberts, 23 North Drive, Rhyl. Congratulations on Tros y Tresi and on the favourable reviews which it is receiving. Refers to the reviews in the Herald of Wales and other newspapers. The writer and others have defended the quarrymen in an article published in Y Cymro shortly before Christmas in response to an attack by Ernest Jones. Was in correspondence on the subject with Sir Wynn Wheldon who sent the writer a copy of his address to the Cymmrodorion Society. Reflects on his childhood at Ffestiniog. Found the whole of Huw T. Edwards's autobiography interesting. The references to Ro-wen and Gillea chapel within the book. Discusses Ernest Bevin's career. The writer's article in the Christmas number of Y Faner, and the place which he accorded the Welsh language in the Pension Appeal Hearings. Reflects on the subsequent changes which have taken place. The use of the Welsh language in government and administration. Welsh books are very few in the local library. Welsh.

M. Chapman-walker, TWW Ltd, Independent Television for South Wales and the West of England, 30 Bouverie Street, London EC4. Gives an update of the negotiations concerning the studio site. Has submitted an application for planning permission for Pontcanna Farm House (in place of Cefn-Coed House), and understands that it is likely that permission will be granted. Feels that it is essential to proceed with their search for a studio. Is anxious that the matter should not be referred to the Minister for approval as this would prove very time consuming. The political difficulties of securing a licence are more problematic than the physical difficulties of getting the station on the air.

M. Chapman-walker, TWW Ltd, Independent Television for South Wales and the West of England, 30 Bouverie Street, London EC4. Wishes to give a progress report on their 'troubled affairs in Wales'. Outlines the progress of the application for Pontcanna Farm, and the proposed erection of the mast. The Minister for Housing and Local Government and Wales has decided to hold a Local Enquiry into the application by the Independent Television Authority for the erection of the mast at St Hilary. It is possible that the mast could be located in Somerset although the studios will be in Wales. Intends to press on with the Cardiff Studio. For reply see A2/122.

Jenkin [Alban] Davies, Oakhurst, Stradbroke Drive, Chigwell, Essex. Encloses a copy of a letter which he has sent to Mr Chapman-Walker (not attached). Feels that, for the sake of Wales, Sam [Jones] should be approached in relation to the post. Is determined that the Welsh service should begin with the best possible prospect of success. Has enjoyed Huw T. Edwards's book.

Henry Brooke, Minister for Welsh Affairs, Whitehall, London SW1. Has appreciated the opportunity of meeting the members of the Council for Wales and Monmouthshire the previous Friday and savoured the tone and contents of Huw T. Edwards's speech. Finds Huw T. Edwards's wisdom in these matters a reassurance and a stimulus to him. The writer and his wife thoroughly enjoyed the five days which they spent in south-west Wales. 'Private'.

J. R. [Jones], c/o The Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank, Hong Kong. Huw T. Edwards and [T.] Mervyn [Jones] were responsible for making the month which the writer recently spent in Wales so enjoyable. Would very much like them to pay a return visit to Hong Kong. Enjoyed reading Tros y Tresi very much, and was particularly impressed by the first part of the book. Has learned much of the political and economic history of Wales by reading the book. Considers it a privilege to be one of the Vice-Presidents of the 1958 Festival of Wales. What duties can he perform in this position? Would like to receive further details of the Festival when these are available. Will much look forward to meeting Huw T. Edwards and other friends in 1958. 'Personal' Welsh.
