Vincent Evans, London, 1900-01, all relating to the transcription of Morris letters and manuscripts in the British Museum. Ii. File 5: A holograph letter from [the Reverend] W[illiam] Davies, Llanwryn [Montgomeryshire], 1710, to Henry Newman at the Reverend Mr Shute's in Bartlet's Buildings, London (receipt of letter and a packet from the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, subscriptions from other parishes, has partly prevailed with a certain minister to become a corresponding member). The letter bears the number 2381 (see Mary Clement (ed.), Correspondence and minutes of the S.P.C.K. relating to Wales 1699-1740 (Cardiff, 1952), p. 35. Abstract No. 2381). Holograph letters (13) and some poetry,1791-1819, of D[avid] Thomas ('Dafydd Ddu Eryri'), Waunfawr, Bettws St Garmon, etc. Some of the letters have been published in [John Jones] 'Myrddin Fardd', Adgof uwch Anghof (Penygroes, 1883). The letters are addressed to John Roberts ('Sion Lleyn'), Pwllheli (4), 1791-1806 (corrections to addressee's poetry, tributes to writer's brother, Humphrey, after his death, some short poetical compositions by the writer), to Griffith Williams ('Gutyn Peris'), Llandygai (8), 1799-1819, (poetry, subjects upon which writer desired addressee to compose hymns, meetings of bards and eisteddfodau, comments and news of contemporary poets, writer's health and work), and one letter, addressee not named, 1804, (addressee's poetry which writer had received, desires addressee to render 2 Samuel XXII in strict metres and to ask other poets to do the same). The poetry includes verses entitled 'Y Cynauaf mawr diweddaf' subscribed 'D. T. a'i cant allan o'r Saesneg ar ddymuniad John Jones Llandwrog Medi 10d 1804 (cf. Dafydd Thomas (Dafydd Ddû Eryri), Corph y Gaingc (Caernarfon, 1834), pp. 323-4), and 'Englynion newyddion i Long newydd o Gaernarfon yr hon a elwir Valiant'. A manuscript index to J. H. Davies (ed.), The Letters of Lewis, Richard, William and John Morris of Anglesey (Morrisiaid Môn) (Aberystwyth, 1907-9) compiled for J. H. Davies by T. Vaughan Roberts, London and completed in 1911. The general index (420 pp.) is followed by lists of 'Words and phrases characteristic of the Morrises or illustrating forms commonly used by them' and 'Books, Pamphlets, Manuscripts & Poems referred to', references to 'Trades & Professions', and a number of corrections. Other items ('Removed from the manuscript before it was sent to Mr Jenkin James, January 7, 1931') consist of a letter, 1911, from the compiler, T. Vaughan Roberts to J. H. Davies, and a letter, 1902, from John Ballinger, Cardiff to J. H. Davies enclosing notes and items of verse (mainly by Lewis Morris) copied by J. This manuscript is the source of the text of Series I of the Triads in the Myvyrian Archaiology Vol. ii, pp. 1-22. The englynion at ff. 119-122b are practically the same as those in Myvyrian Archaiology, pp. 543-547, col. i, but that the arrangement is different. The text at f. 132 was copied in September 1758 from an autograph manuscript of Edward Lhuyd. The text at f. 154 verso was transcribed from Llyfr Coch Nannau (see Mostyn MS 144) 'and collated it with my brother Lewis Morris MSS'.

A small eighteenth century manuscript containing a few 'englynion', etc., by John Griffith 'o Landdyfnan yn Môn', Owen Gruffydd, J. Rhydderch, Griffith Lloyd, and anonymous authors, with two anecdotes in Welsh. The name 'L. Morris' occurs beneath the anecdotes and the manuscript appears to be for the most part in the hand of Lewis Morris ('Llewelyn Ddu o Fôn').

A composite collection of Welsh poetry and prose entitled 'Crwth a Thelyn. Y Rhan Gyntaf, sef y Crwth. Yr hwn Grwth a Aing ynddaw Swrn o Orchestawl Waith y Cynfeirdd, ac Ychydig o Farddoniaeth yr oes hon'. The collection was compiled by Hugh Jones, Esqr., of Talyllyn, and was begun by him about 1730. E:h:'). In connection with the Reverend Evan Herbert, see Panton MS 24, p. 135; he was rector of Llanfairfechan, Caernarvonshire from 1801 until his death in 1830. The chronicles are to be found in Panton MS 23, pp. 155-229, and Panton MS 38, pp.137-145, but whether the Panton manuscripts contain a direct transcript from the present manuscript is uncertain. There are some pencil notes in the autograph of St George Armstrong Williams. The number '22' occurs on a label on the cover, with '384' written in pencil above.
