Farm and cottage receiving rentals

The collection comprises the following: (i) Llangedwyn and Llanforda rents, comprising property in p's Oswestry, Bishop's Castle (from RC11 onwards), Shropshire, Llangedwyn, Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog and Llansilin, co. Denb., Llansanffraid-ym-Mechain and Pennant, co. Mont., and Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, cos Mont. and Denb. The Llangedwyn and Llanforda rents collected between 1898 and 1910 (RC35-RC47) are not contained in the volumes described below, but rather, are contained in separate volumes (see series entitled Llangedwyn Estate Rents). In 1911 (RC48), when this collection re-appears in the volumes described below, properties in the following parishes have been added: Wrexham, Gresford, Ruabon, Holt, Llangollen, Llandysilio-yn-Iâl, Llanarmon-yn-Iâl and Llandegla, co. Denb., Bangor Is-coed, co. Flint, and Tilston, Cheshire. (ii) Wynnstay and Ruthin rents, comprising property in p's Wrexham, Llangollen, Llandysilio-yn-Iâl, Erbistock, Ruabon, Gresford, Holt, Marchwiail, Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd, Llanfwrog, Llanbedr Dyffryn Clwyd, Llanynys, Ruthin and Llanhychan, co. Denb., and Bangor Is-coed and Overton, co. Flint. Contained with this collection are details of Mrs Strangeways and Mrs Jane Hughes's charities, consisting of rent charges issuing out of lands in p's Carno and Llanwnnog (RC18-RC50), co. Mont., and t. Knolton [p. Overton], co. Flint (RC18 onwards); also included are details concerning interest on road bonds for the second (RC18-RC23) and fourth division (RC18-RC27) of Montgomeryshire roads, and the Dolgellau, Mawddwy and Towyn Turnpike Trust (RC18-RC22). Property in p. Llandegla, co. Denb., contained from RC22 to RC34. Property in p's Llandysilio-yn-Iâl, Llanarmon-yn-Iâl and Holt are omitted from RC34 onwards (transferred to the Llangedwyn Estate Rents). Details of the rent on 20 St James' Square, London, contained from RC43 onwards. From RC46 onwards, the Wynnstay rental is arranged as follows, with the following places named as parishes: Ruabon, Cefn, Pen-y-cae, Erbistock, Eyton, Royton, Marchwiail, Abenbury-fawr, Esclusham, Erddig (omitted after RC52), Llai, Gwersyllt, Llangollen, Ruthin (omitted after RC48), Llanynys (omitted after RC48), Llanhychan (omitted after RC47), Llanbedr Dyffryn Clwyd (omitted after RC47), Llanfwrog (omitted after RC48) and Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd, co. Denb., Erbistock and Overton, co. Flint, and London (20 St James' Square). (Iii) Llwydiarth rents, comprising property in p's Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, Llanfyllin, Hirnant, Pennant, Llanwddyn, Llanfihangel-yng-Ngwynfa, Llangadfan, Llanfair Caereinion, Llanerfyl and Garthbeibio, co. Mont. Property in p. Pennant is omtted after 1897 (RC34), and property in p. Hirnant after 1914 (RC51). (Iv) Cyfeiliog / Llanbryn-mair rents, comprising property in p's Cemais, Llanwrin, Machynlleth, Penegoes, Darowen, Llanbrynmair, Carno, Llanwnnog, Trefeglwys, Llanidloes and Llangurig, co. Mont. Property in p. Llanbadarn Fawr, co. Card., is added in 1866 (RC3), in p. Pennal, co. Mer., in 1879 (RC16), and in p. Llanfihangel-y-Creuddyn, co. Card., in 1900 (RC37). Property in p. Llanwnnog omitted after 1873 (RC10). Rents for sporting in the manors of Cyfeiliog and Arwystli are included with the Cyfeiliog rental from 1876 (RC13), having been in the Glan-llyn rental in RC11-12. Encroachments in p. Llandinam are contained from 1878 (RC15). (v) Glan-llyn rents, comprising property in p's Llanfor, Llanycil (including the town of Bala), Llanuwchllyn (including charity lands), Llangywer and Trawsfynydd, co. Mer. The Glan-llyn rents are included from 1867 (RC4). Details of boats on Bala Lake are contained from 1874 (RC11), as are rents for sporting in p. Trawsfynydd. (vi) Mine rents and royalties, including mines in cos Mont. and Denb. and Shropshire (the mines are named but not the parishes in which they are situated. These rents are included from 1879 (RC16). No mines in Shropshire are contained after RC34 (except for RC46 and RC47). No mines in co. Mer. after appear RC45 (except for RC62). Farm and cottage rents as described above will also be found in the series of general rentals (Farm and Cottage Rents, 1863-98). With regard to the dates in this series, the year given will represent the last date when the rents were due (be it Lady Day or Michaelmas or any other date). For example, RC3 contains rents collected at Michaelmas 1865 and Lady Day 1866, but the date given is 1866. Mine rents and royalties, in particular, were collected at various times throughout the year. The volumes for 1884 and 1920-1924 are not at NLW. The numbers RC21 and RC57-61 have been provided in case NLW should acquire them at some future date.

'Non-Wynnstay rentals'

The 'non-Wynnstay rentals' described below (RA 30-40) are mostly strays. Where known, the reasons for their presence among the Wynnstay archives are indicated. Cross-references are given where there appear to be links between 'non-Wynnstay rentals' and the general series. Included with the 'non-Wynnstay rentals' described below are stray rentals which are to be found in the general series (R 3/3-5 and R 3/10-12).

Mine rents and royalties

The collection comprises mines and quarries in cos Denb., Mont., Mer., and Salop. The mines and quarries are named but not the parishes in which they are situated. The rents specified below were due at various times throughout the year. Collector: Owen Hughes, 1877-1880. 'Rents for sporting'

The collection comprises lands in the manors of Cyfeiliog and Arwystli, and in p. Trawsfynydd, co. Mer. Lands in p. Llangurig, co. Mont., are mentioned from 1886 (R141/1c) onwards. Lands in p. Llangywer, co. Mer., mentioned from 1892 (R147/1c) onwards. Lands in p's Llangollen, Llandegla, Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd, Ruthin, and Llandysilio [yn-Iâl], co. Denb., and in p. Llanbryn-mair, co. Mont., and part of the Llwydiarth estate, contained in one or more of the volumes from 1894 (R149) onwards. Collector: Owen Hughes, 1874-1880. Encroachments in the manors of Cyfeiliog and Arwystli

The collection comprises property in the manor of Cyfeiliog (p's Machynlleth, Cemais, Llanwrin and Llanbryn-mair), and the manor of Arwystli (p. Llangurig), all in co. Mont. From 1878 (R133/1b) onwards, property in p's Darowen and Penegoes (Manor of Cyfeiliog) and p. Llandinam (Manor of Arwystli) are included. From 1885 (R140/1b) onwards, property in p. Carno (Manor of Arwystli) is included. Property in p. Penegoes (Manor of Cyfeiliog) is omitted after 1891 (R146/1b). Collector: Owen Hughes, 1874-1880. Farm and cottage rents

Sir Watkin Williams Wynn, 6th bart, died on 9 May 1885, and from 1885 (R141/1a) onwards, the properties in the preceding series are arranged as follows: (i) The estates of which Lady Williams Wynn is seised for life with remainder in tail male, consisting of property in Oswestry, Bishop's Castle, Wrexham, Gresford, Ruabon, Bangor Is-coed, Tilston, Holt, Llangollen, Llandysilio-yn-Iâl, Llanarmon-yn-Iâl, Llandegla, Llangedwyn, Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog, Llansilin, Llansanffraid-ym-Mechain and Pennant [i.e. Llangedwyn estate]. Llangollen, co. Denb.

Farm and cottage rents

The collection comprises property in p. Oswestry, Shropshire; in p's Wrexham, Gresford, Holt, Llangollen, Llandysilio-yn-Iâl, Llanarmon-yn-Iâl, Llandegla, Llangedwyn, Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog, Llansilin, Erbistock, Ruabon, Marchwiail, Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd, Llanfwrog, Llanbedr Dyffryn Clwyd, Llanynys, Llanhychan, and Ruthin, co. Denb.; in p. Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, cos Denb. and Mont.; in p's Bangor Is-coed and Overton, co. Flint; and in p's Llansanffraid-ym-Mechain, Pennant, Llanfyllin, Hirnant, Llanwddyn, Llanfihangel-yng-Ngwynfa, Llangadfan, Llanfair Caereinion, Llanerfyl, Garthbeibio, Cemais, Llanwrin, Machynlleth, Penegoes, Darowen, Llanbrynmair, Carno, Llanwnnog, Trefeglwys, Llanidloes and Llangurig, co. Mont. These properties were formerly to be found in the following estates or collections: Oswestry or Llanforda estate, Llansilin collection, Llwydiarth estate, Arwystli collection, Manor of Cyfeiliog collection, Llangedwyn collection, Wynnstay collection and the Vale of Clwyd/Ruthin estate collection. Farm and cottage rents are also contained in a separate series of Farm and cottage receiving rentals, 1864-1925. Until 1885 (R140/1a), the rentals below are arranged according to whether the estates were held in fee simple, tail male or tail general, whereas the properties in the separate series of Farm and cottage receiving rentals are arranged according to the more familiar pattern of estates (Llangedwyn and Llanforda rents, Wynnstay and Ruthin rents, Llwydiarth rents, Cyfeiliog/Llanbryn-mair rents, Glan-llyn rents). Collectors: Thomas Adey Cox, 1863, William Jones, 1863-1872, Owen Hughes 1872-1880. From 1865 (R120/1a) onwards, property in p. Llanbadarn, co. Card., is included. From 1868 (R123/1a) onwards the Glan-llyn estate collection is included (except for the chief rents), consisting of property in p's Llanfor, Llanycil, Llanuwchllyn, Llangower and Trawsfynydd, co. Mer., and from 1878 (R133/1a) in p. Pennal, co. Mer. From 1874 (R129/1a) onwards, property in Bishop's Castle, Shropshire, is included, and from 1877 (R132/1a) onwards, property in p. Tilston, Cheshire.

Wynnstay fee farm rents

The collection comprises property in p's Wrexham, Erbistock, Llangollen, Llandysilio-yn-Iâl, Llanarmon-yn-Iâl, Llansanffraid Glynceiriog, and Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, co. Denb. The rents are due at Michaelmas, not Lady Day. From 1884 (R140/1d) onwards, property in p. Erbistock is omitted. From 1890 (R146/1d) onwards, property in p. Llansanffraid Glynceiriog is omitted. Collectors: Nathan Burlinson, 1861, Thomas Adey Cox, 1862, William Jones, 1863-1871, Owen Hughes, 1871-1879. Llwynymaen estate

The Llwynymaen estate collection comprises property in t's Trefarclawdd and Llanforda, p. Oswestry, Shropshire. Collectors: Richard Jones Croxon, 1839-1843, John Croxon, 1844-1851, and Nathan Burlinson 1852-1854. Post-1854, the above estate has not been numbered separately, but, rather, is included with the collection entitled Oswestry or Llanforda estate.

Llanfair Caereinion tithes

Containing details of tithes in p. Llanfair Caereinion, co. Mont., including t's Rhosaflo, Brynelen, Cil-yr-ych, Rhiwhiriarth, Llanloddian, Bryn-glas, Dol-ged, Llanfair, Gwenynog and Pen-tyrch. The dates of the volumes refer to the year for which the tithes are due, e.g. the 1815 tithes are detailed in R71/7, but were not necessarily collected in 1815. Collectors: Samuel Hughes, 1817-1833, David Jones, 1834-1856, Joseph Owen Jones, 1856-1860, and Nathan Burlinson, 1861.

'Rental, freehold property'

A single, separate volume containing a rental which includes tenants from the following places: p's Wrexham, Ruabon, Llangollen, Erbistock, Gwersyllt, Marchwiail, Bryneglwys, Holt, Llandysilio[-yn-Iâl] and Llanarmon [-yn-Iâl], co. Denb., and p's Bangor Is-coed and Overton, co. Flint. Collectors: D. Parry, 1813, and E. Pickering 1814-1821.

Trefarclawdd and Overley Hall Colliery payments

Contained in these payments are details relating to amounts of money paid to colliers, labourers, etc., at Trefarclawdd (in p. Oswestry, Shropshire) and Overley Hall collieries. Collectors: E. Pickering, 1809-1817, and John Howell, 1819-1822. For other accounts pertaining to these collieries, see Wynnstay MSS 104-109, and RA22.

Wynnstay collection

The Wynnstay collection comprises property in p's Wrexham, Ruabon, Holt, Marchwiail, Erbistock, Gresford, Llangollen, Llandysilio-yn-Iâl, Llanarmon-yn-Iâl, Bryneglwys, Llansanffraid Glynceiriog, Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant and Gwersyllt, co. Denb., and in p's Overton and Bangor Is-coed, co. Flint. The rentals for 1832-1834 (R87/2, R88/2 and R89/2) contain details of election disbursements. RA26 contains details of Wynnstay rents in 1848, with detailed descriptions of each property (acreages of meadow and pasture, arable and rough, houses and outbuildings, etc.). For tithe rent charges in p. Ruabon, 1830-1846 and 1847-1855, see RA23 and RA25. RA28 includes a survey of the collection, [late 1850s-early 1860s], giving field names, details of acreages and annual rent due, together with plans of some of the properties in p. Ruabon. Collectors: David Parry, 1810-1813, E. Pickering, 1814-1835, Edward Tench, 1835-1855, and Nathan Burlinson, 1856-1860. For details of this collection before 1810, see Collection II. Post-1860, most of the properties in the collection will be found in one or more of the following rentals, before they appear together once again in the collection entitled Farm and Cottage Rents: R116/3a and R117/2a (being estates of which Sir Watkin Williams Wynn is seised in fee simple), and R116/3c and R117/2b (being settled estates). However, the Wynnstay fee farm rents contained in R115/3e, will be found post-1860 in a separate collection for Wynnstay fee farm rents 1860-1898. They are also contained in the series of Tithe, Chief and Fee Farm Rentals. See also the series of Farm and Cottage Receiving Rentals containing Wynnstay and Ruthin rents, 1864-1925.

Maenan lordship

The Maenan lordship collection comprises property in p's Eglwysfach, Llansanffraid Glan Conwy, Llangernyw, and Llysfaen (ecclesiastical parish in Llandrillo-yn-Rhos), cos Denb. & Caern. With regard to the dates in this series, R64/12 (1809) would contain a rental for the year 1809, rather than a rental collected at Lady Day 1809. This pattern has been followed throughout this collection, since some of the rents are collected at Lady Day, others at Michaelmas, while the dates of others are not given. Collectors: William Williams, 1809-1823, John Maughan, 1824-1838, and Thomas Turnor, 1839-1857.

Vale of Clwyd/Ruthin estate

The collection comprises property in p's Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd, Llanelidan, Derwen, Llanfwrog, Ruthin, Llanynys, Llanbedr Dyffryn Clwyd, Gyffylliog, Llandyrnog, Denbigh, Llanrhaeadr-yng-Nghinmeirch, Llangwm, and Llanhychan, co. Denb. RA28 includes a survey, late 1850s-early 1860s of the above collection (giving field names, details of acreages, and annual rent due), together with a plan of part of Plas-y-ward farm sold to the Denbigh, Ruthin & Corwen Railway Co., 1860. Collectors: John Williams, 1809-1829, William Turnor, 1830-1832, Thomas Turnor, 1833, Thomas and Walter Turnor, 1834-1837, Walter Turnor, 1838-1839, Thomas Turnor, 1840-1858, Nathan Burlinson, 1859-1861, Thomas Adey Cox, 1862, William Jones, 1863-1871, and Owen Hughes 1871-1879. From R116/3f (1860) onwards, only property in p's Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd, Llanrhaeadr-yng-Nghinmeirch, Denbigh, Llangwm and Ruthin remain. Ruthin estate fee farm rents as specified below are also contained in the series of Tithe, Chief and Fee Farm Rentals. Property in p. Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd and in Ruthin will also be found in R116/3d and R117/2c (being rentals of settled estates in cos Denb. and Mont.), then in the collection entitled Farm and Cottage Rents. Property in Llanfwrog, Llanynys, Llanbedr Dyffryn Clwyd and Llanhychan will not be found in the rentals described below, but in R116/3d and R117/2c, then in the collection entitled Farm and Cottage Rents. See also the series of Farm and Cottage Receiving Rentals (Wynnstay and Ruthin rents). In 1879 (R135/1e) only property in p's Llanrhaeadr-yng-Nghinmeirch, Denbigh, Llangwm and Ruthin remains; in 1880 (R136/1e) only property in p's Denbigh, Llangwm and Ruthin remain; and from 1881 (R137/1e) onwards only property in p's Denbigh and Llangwm remains. For details of the above rents after 1898, see the series of Tithe, Chief and Fee Farm Rentals, which contain Ruthin Fee Farm Rents from 1863 to 1918.

Oswestry/Llanforda estate

The collection comprises property in p. Oswestry (including t's Trefarclawdd, Maesbury, Cynhinion, Pentre-gaer, Trefonnen, Llanforda and Treflach), p. Selatyn, p. St Martin's, p. Baschurch, (t. Soughton) p. Llansilin, and Tancoedygaer, all in Shropshire. Collectors: Richard Croxon, 1809-1838, John Croxon, 1839-1851, Nathan Burlinson, 1852-1860. From 1855 (R110/1a), the collection includes the Llwynmaen estate (see the Llwynymaen Estate collection, 1839-1854). After 1860, the property will be found in R116/3a, then in R117/2a, both of which are rentals of co. Salop. and co. Denb., estates of which Sir Watkin Williams Wynn is seised in fee simple; then they will be found in the collection entitled Farm and Cottage Rents. Much Wenlock collection

The collection comprises property in p's Much Wenlock and Harley, Shropshire. Also details relating to Wenlock and Westwood tithes, and lists of limeburners. Collectors: Richard Collins, 1810-1838, Humphrey Hinton and Edward Jeffreys, 1839-1841, Humphrey Hinton, 1842-1847, and Edward Hinton 1848-1857.

Glan-llyn estate

The collection comprises property in p's Llandderfel, Llandrillo-yn-Edeirnion (including t. Branas), Llanfor, Gwyddelwern, Bettws Gwerfil-Goch, Llanfihangel y Traethau, Llanycil, Llanuwchllyn, Llanymawddwy, Mallwyd (transferred to the Cyfeiliog estate), Llangywer, Trawsfynydd, Llanfrothen and Llanfachreth, all in co. Mer., and in p's Penmachno, Clynnog and Llanbeblig (including properties in Caernarfon), co. Caern. This collection also contains the chief rents for some of the above parishes, including Llanfor, Llanuwchllyn, Llanfachreth, Llangywer, Llanycil, Llandrillo-yn-Edeirnion, Llanfihangel, Llanbeblig and Trawsfynydd; also, a statement of account of almshouses in Llanuwchllyn, R79-R121; election expenses in co. Mont. (1830s); and details of boats (and their owners) on Bala Lake; R83/7e (1828) contains a rental of estates had in exchange from Viscount Clive, consisting of property in p's Llanerfyl, Llangadfan and Llanfair Caereinion, co. Mont. By 1861, some of the above-named places have been gradually omitted from this collection, and only the following parishes in co. Mer. remain: Llandderfel, Llanycil, Llanuwchllyn, Llangywer, Trawsfynydd, Llanfor, Llandrillo and Llanfihangel y Traethau; and from R118/2 to R135/1i chief rents are contained for the following parishes in co. Mer. only: Llanfor, Llanuwchllyn, Trawsfynydd, Llangower, Llanycil, Llandrillo and Llanfihangel y Traethau. Collectors: Griffith Richards, 1809-1821, Samuel Hughes, 1824-1834, Pryce Jones, 1835-1839, John Williams, 1839-1864, John Williams (executor of the first named John Williams), 1865-1866, William Jones, 1867-1871, and Owen Hughes 1871-1879. R122/1b (1867) contains rents only for p's Llanfor, Llanycil, Llanuwchllyn, Llangower and Trawsfynydd, co. Mer., while R122/1h (1867) contains chief rents as specified above; R123/1g (1867) and all succeeding volumes contain the chief rents only, while the other rents of the Glan-llyn estate have been transferred (see R123/1a) to the collection entitled Farm and Cottage Rents. By R135/1i (1879), only the chief rents for the following parishes in co. Mer. remain: Llanfor, Llanuwchllyn, Llangywer, Llanycil and Llandrillo. Lordship/Manor of Cynllaith Owain chief rents

The Lordship/Manor of Cynllaith Owain chief rents collection comprises property in p. Llansilin, co. Denb., including t's Llansilin, Lloran, Moelfre, Estynllan, Priddbwll, Sycharth, Rhiwlas and Bodlith. From R64 to R92, 1808-1835, some cottage and enclosure rents are included with the chief rents, but chief rents only appear in the rentals from R94 to R151, 1837-1896. The rents are collected at Michaelmas, not Lady Day. Collectors: Samuel Lovett, 1808-1835, John Croxon, 1841-1842, Nathan Burlinson, 1852-1862, William Jones, 1863-1871, Owen Hughes, 1871-1879.
