Llangedwyn estate rents

The collection comprises property in p's Oswestry, Bishop's Castle, Shropshire, Wrexham, Gresford, Ruabon, Holt, Llangollen, Llandysilio-yn-Iâl, Llanarmon-yn-Iâl, Llandegla, Llangedwyn, Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog and Llansilin, co. Denb., Llansanffraid-ym-Mechain and Pennant, co. Mont., Bangor Is-coed, co. Flint, and Tilston, Cheshire. The pre-1897 Llangedwyn estate rents (the estate of Lady Williams Wynn) are not contained in separate volumes as below, but, rather, with other estate rentals in the series of Farm and Cottage receiving rentals. After 1911 (RD29), the Llangedwyn rents re-appear in those rentals. Some additional properties are included in the Llangedwyn rentals from 1897 onwards as a result of the transfer of certain properties from the Wynnstay and Ruthin estate to the Llangedwyn estate. Llangedwyn rents will also be found in the series of general rentals (see Farm and cottage rents, 1863-1898). The Llangedwyn rentals are half-yearly, ending either at Lady Day or Michaelmas. Cynllaith Owain chief rents, consisting of property in t's Lloran and Priddbwll [p. Llansilin], co. Denb., are also included from 1898 (RD4). However, since these chief rents were collected yearly, at Michaelmas, they will only be found in the Michaelmas volumes. Details of Cynllaith Owain chief rents before 1898 will be found in the general rentals, and in the series of Tithe, chief and fee farm rentals.

Farm and cottage receiving rentals

The collection comprises the following: (i) Llangedwyn and Llanforda rents, comprising property in p's Oswestry, Bishop's Castle (from RC11 onwards), Shropshire, Llangedwyn, Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog and Llansilin, co. Denb., Llansanffraid-ym-Mechain and Pennant, co. Mont., and Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, cos Mont. and Denb. The Llangedwyn and Llanforda rents collected between 1898 and 1910 (RC35-RC47) are not contained in the volumes described below, but rather, are contained in separate volumes (see series entitled Llangedwyn Estate Rents). In 1911 (RC48), when this collection re-appears in the volumes described below, properties in the following parishes have been added: Wrexham, Gresford, Ruabon, Holt, Llangollen, Llandysilio-yn-Iâl, Llanarmon-yn-Iâl and Llandegla, co. Denb., Bangor Is-coed, co. Flint, and Tilston, Cheshire. (ii) Wynnstay and Ruthin rents, comprising property in p's Wrexham, Llangollen, Llandysilio-yn-Iâl, Erbistock, Ruabon, Gresford, Holt, Marchwiail, Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd, Llanfwrog, Llanbedr Dyffryn Clwyd, Llanynys, Ruthin and Llanhychan, co. Denb., and Bangor Is-coed and Overton, co. Flint. Contained with this collection are details of Mrs Strangeways and Mrs Jane Hughes's charities, consisting of rent charges issuing out of lands in p's Carno and Llanwnnog (RC18-RC50), co. Mont., and t. Knolton [p. Overton], co. Flint (RC18 onwards); also included are details concerning interest on road bonds for the second (RC18-RC23) and fourth division (RC18-RC27) of Montgomeryshire roads, and the Dolgellau, Mawddwy and Towyn Turnpike Trust (RC18-RC22). Property in p. Llandegla, co. Denb., contained from RC22 to RC34. Property in p's Llandysilio-yn-Iâl, Llanarmon-yn-Iâl and Holt are omitted from RC34 onwards (transferred to the Llangedwyn Estate Rents). Details of the rent on 20 St James' Square, London, contained from RC43 onwards. From RC46 onwards, the Wynnstay rental is arranged as follows, with the following places named as parishes: Ruabon, Cefn, Pen-y-cae, Erbistock, Eyton, Royton, Marchwiail, Abenbury-fawr, Esclusham, Erddig (omitted after RC52), Llai, Gwersyllt, Llangollen, Ruthin (omitted after RC48), Llanynys (omitted after RC48), Llanhychan (omitted after RC47), Llanbedr Dyffryn Clwyd (omitted after RC47), Llanfwrog (omitted after RC48) and Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd, co. Denb., Erbistock and Overton, co. Flint, and London (20 St James' Square). (Iii) Llwydiarth rents, comprising property in p's Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, Llanfyllin, Hirnant, Pennant, Llanwddyn, Llanfihangel-yng-Ngwynfa, Llangadfan, Llanfair Caereinion, Llanerfyl and Garthbeibio, co. Mont. Property in p. Pennant is omtted after 1897 (RC34), and property in p. Hirnant after 1914 (RC51). (Iv) Cyfeiliog / Llanbryn-mair rents, comprising property in p's Cemais, Llanwrin, Machynlleth, Penegoes, Darowen, Llanbrynmair, Carno, Llanwnnog, Trefeglwys, Llanidloes and Llangurig, co. Mont. Property in p. Llanbadarn Fawr, co. Card., is added in 1866 (RC3), in p. Pennal, co. Mer., in 1879 (RC16), and in p. Llanfihangel-y-Creuddyn, co. Card., in 1900 (RC37). Property in p. Llanwnnog omitted after 1873 (RC10). Rents for sporting in the manors of Cyfeiliog and Arwystli are included with the Cyfeiliog rental from 1876 (RC13), having been in the Glan-llyn rental in RC11-12. Encroachments in p. Llandinam are contained from 1878 (RC15). (v) Glan-llyn rents, comprising property in p's Llanfor, Llanycil (including the town of Bala), Llanuwchllyn (including charity lands), Llangywer and Trawsfynydd, co. Mer. The Glan-llyn rents are included from 1867 (RC4). Details of boats on Bala Lake are contained from 1874 (RC11), as are rents for sporting in p. Trawsfynydd. (vi) Mine rents and royalties, including mines in cos Mont. and Denb. and Shropshire (the mines are named but not the parishes in which they are situated. These rents are included from 1879 (RC16). No mines in Shropshire are contained after RC34 (except for RC46 and RC47). No mines in co. Mer. after appear RC45 (except for RC62). Farm and cottage rents as described above will also be found in the series of general rentals (Farm and Cottage Rents, 1863-98). With regard to the dates in this series, the year given will represent the last date when the rents were due (be it Lady Day or Michaelmas or any other date). For example, RC3 contains rents collected at Michaelmas 1865 and Lady Day 1866, but the date given is 1866. Mine rents and royalties, in particular, were collected at various times throughout the year. The volumes for 1884 and 1920-1924 are not at NLW. The numbers RC21 and RC57-61 have been provided in case NLW should acquire them at some future date.

Tithe, chief and fee farm rentals

This collection comprises the following: (i) Wynnstay fee farm rents, comprising property in p's Wrexham, Ruabon, Erbistock, Llangollen, Llandisilio-yn-Iâl, Llanarmon-yn-Iâl, Llansanffraid Glyn Ceiriog, Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant. Erbistock is omitted from 1880, Llansanffraid from 1888, and Llanarmon from 1917. Wynnstay fee farm rents, 1860-1898, are also contained in the series of general rentals. (Ii) Ruthin fee farm rents, comprising property in p's Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd, Llanrhaiadr yng Nghinmeirch, Denbigh, Llangwm, and Ruthin. Llanfair is omitted from 1877, and Llanrhaiadr from 1880. Ruthin fee farm rents up to 1898 are also contained in the series of general rentals. (iii) Cynllaith Owain chief rents, comprising property in p. Llansilin (t's Lloran, Moelfre, Estynallan, Priddbwll, Sycharth, Rhiwlas). Estynallan and Sycharth are omitted from 1880, Moelfre from 1886, Rhiwlas from 1889, and Priddbwll from 1915. Cynllaith Owen chief rents, 1808-1896, are also contained in the series of general rentals, and also in the Llangedwyn estate rentals. (iv) Arwystli chief rents, comprising property in p's Llandinam, Llanidloes forming the Berthlwyd estate, and property in p's Penystrywaid, Llandinam (t's Maes-mawr, Llandinam, Trewyddan, Carnedd, Gwerneirin, Hengynwydd, Deddenydd), Carno, Llanwnnog (t's Uwchlaw'r-coed, Surnant, Esgob, Wig, Ystradfaelog, Caer-sws), Trefeglwys (t's Esgeiredd, Bodaeoch, Maestregymer, Dolgwden, Glyntrefnant), Llanidloes (t's Manledd, Brithdir, Glynhafren Iscoed, Ystradhunod, Cefncroesllwybr, Morfodion, Treflyn, Rhydfaes), town of Llanidloes, p. Llangurig (t's Llaniwaered, Cefnhafodau, Llanifyny, Glynhafren Uwchcoed, Glyngynwydd, Glynbrochan). Arwystli chief rents, 1804-1898, are also contained in the series of general rentals. (v) Cyfeiliog chief rents, comprising property in p's Penegoes, Llanwrin, Cemais, Darowen, Llanbryn-mair, Machynlleth, Machynlleth town. Manor of Cyfeiliog chief rents, 1808-1898, are also contained in the series of general rentals. (vi) Llangurig parish tithes. Tithes for p. Llangurig (up to 1898) are also contained in the series of general rentals. (vii) Llanidloes parish tithes, comprising property in t's Brithdir, Cilmachallt, Hengynwydd, Treflyn. Tithes for p. Llanidloes (up to 1898) are also contained in the series of general rentals. (viii) Trefeglwys parish tithes, comprising property in t's Glyntrefnant and Esgeiredd, together with p. Llanbryn-mair. Tithes for p. Trefeglwys (up to 1898) are also contained in the series of general rentals. From 1866 (RB4) the Glan-llyn chief rents, collected at Michaelmas, are added, comprising property in p's Llanfor, Llanuwchllyn, Trawsfynydd, Llangywer, Llanycil, Llandrillo-yn-Edeirnion, Llanfihangel-y-traethau, and boats on Bala Lake. Boats on Bala Lake are omitted from 1874, property in Trawsfynydd and Llanfihangel-y-traethau are omitted from 1880, and in Llangywer from 1914. Glan-llyn chief rents up to 1898 are also contained in the series of general rentals. From 1890-1892 (RB14) Plas Madoc tithes, collected on 1 Jan., are added, comprising property in p. Ruabon (t. Cristionydd Cynrig). From RB17 (1899-1901) to RB21 (1911-13) the Cynllaith Owain chief rents are omitted. With regard to the covering dates in this series, the fee farm and chief rents were collected at Michaelmas and the tithes were collected on 1 Jan. The rental dated, for example 1893-1895, includes collection sheets for chief rents due Michaelmas 1892-1894 and tithe rents due 1 Jan. 1893-1895.

'Non-Wynnstay rentals'

The 'non-Wynnstay rentals' described below (RA 30-40) are mostly strays. Where known, the reasons for their presence among the Wynnstay archives are indicated. Cross-references are given where there appear to be links between 'non-Wynnstay rentals' and the general series. Included with the 'non-Wynnstay rentals' described below are stray rentals which are to be found in the general series (R 3/3-5 and R 3/10-12).

Much Wenlock collection

The collection comprises property in p. Much Wenlock, t. Stanwardine [p. Baschurch], and Oswestry, Shropshire. However, in RA2 & RA3 (1552/3 and 1580), several place-names are mentioned including the following: Weston Oxenbold, Shipton, Burton, Sturchley, Deuxhill, Sutton, Madeley, Presthope, Lushcot, Hatton, Stoke St Milborough, Downton, More, Caughley, Acton Round, Harley, Wigwig, Benthall, Posenhall, Atterley, Walton and Wyke, all in Shropshire. RA4 (1581) contains a rental of lands belonging to the Chantry of Wenlock, due unto Richard Modlicott, while RA5 [16 cent.?] contains a particular of all the lands belonging to the monastery of Wenlock. Collectors: Thomas Butler, vicar of Wenlock, 1643, Thomas Greene and Samuel Littlehales 1716-1718, Randle Jones, 1729-1738, John Croft, 1744-17767, and John Jones 1768-1771.

Llwynymaen estate

The Llwynymaen estate collection comprises property in t's Trefarclawdd and Llanforda, p. Oswestry, Shropshire. Collectors: Richard Jones Croxon, 1839-1843, John Croxon, 1844-1851, and Nathan Burlinson 1852-1854. Post-1854, the above estate has not been numbered separately, but, rather, is included with the collection entitled Oswestry or Llanforda estate.

Manor of Valle Crucis and Wrexham Abbot

Property in p's Wrexham, Ruabon, Llangollen, Llandysilio-yn-Iâl, Llansanffraid Glyn Ceiriog, Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, co. Denb., is from R9/8 (1702) onwards combined with property on Llantysilio Commons, Bryneglwys Commons, Llanarmon Commons, the late lands of Nathaniel Williams in t. Wrexham Abbot, the late lands of Elias Price purchased in 1702 in t. Wrexham Abbot, and Oernant Slate Quarries. From R27/9 (1744) onwards property in p's Ruthyn, Llanfrothen is added. This had formerly been included in the Glasinfryn Collection. However, Llanfrothen is omitted from R29/9, R30/12, R40/6. It has been incorporated in R29/5 (1748), R29/6 (1748), R29/13b (1749), R29/13c (1749), R30/6 (1750), R30/9(1751), R40/11 (1772). R21/6 (1721) includes election bills. L1291 (1663), L1286b (1664) indicate that at that date the manors belonged to the Rt Hon. Baptist, Viscount Campden. Collectors: John Edwards (1702-1711), Randle Jones (1713-1748), Thomas Jones (1748-1770), Randle Jones (1772). Post 1772, property in co. Denb. is contained in Collection II and property in p. Llanfrothen in Collection I.

Glasinfryn and Gwydir estates

The Glasinfryn estate comprised property in p's Llanfechell and [Llangwyllog] (hamlet of Tresgawen), co. Ang, and in p's Conwy (t. Y Gyffin), Treflys, Pwllheli, Clynnog and Llanberis, co. Caern. R8/1 (1678) and R8/6 (1680) contain the Glasinfryn estate only. From 1683 (L1301) it is combined with property which formed part of the Gwydir estate, in p's [Waunfawr formerly Llanbeblig] (t. Treflan), Llanfair-is-gaer, Llandeiniolen, Llanrug and Bangor, and Caernarfon town, all co. Caern, p. Llysfaen in co. Denb., and p. Llanfrothen in co. Mer. From 1691 (R8/9) property in [p. Conway] (t. Y Gyffin) purchased from William Robinson, esq. is added. From 1684 (L1301) to 1737 (R24/6) one property in Ruthin is added. From 1697 (R9/6a) property in co. Ang. is omitted. In 1741 (R26/1) p. Llanfrothen is transferred to the manor of Valle Crucis collection. Collectors: John Jones, 1678-1701, Randle Jones, 1708-1737, Edward Lloyd, 1741-1752, William Owen, 1759-1769, William Griffith, 1770-1771. Llanfair Caereinion tithes

Containing details of tithes in p. Llanfair Caereinion, co. Mont., including t's Rhosaflo, Brynelen, Cil-yr-ych, Rhiwhiriarth, Llanloddian, Bryn-glas, Dol-ged, Llanfair, Gwenynog and Pen-tyrch. The dates of the volumes refer to the year for which the tithes are due, e.g. the 1815 tithes are detailed in R71/7, but were not necessarily collected in 1815. Collectors: Samuel Hughes, 1817-1833, David Jones, 1834-1856, Joseph Owen Jones, 1856-1860, and Nathan Burlinson, 1861.

Rhiwgoch estate and other properties in co's Mer. and Denb.

This series of rentals combines: (1) property on the Rhiwgoch estate, acquired by Henry Wynn through his marriage with Catherine, heiress of Ellis Lloyd of Rhiwgoch, namely property in p's Trawsfynydd, Dolgellau, [Llanddwywe] (t. Is-y-graig) and Llanfair-juxta-Harlech, co. Mer.; and (2) property which had formed part of the Wynn estate in cos Mer. and Denb., namely property in p. Llandderfel in Penllyn hundred, and p's Llandrillo-yn-Edeirnion, Corwen (Ddwyryd) and Betws in Edeirnion hundred, all co. Mer., and p. Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr (t. Llysan), co. Denb. R7 (1669-1673) contains property in Trawsfynydd, Dolgellau, Llanfair-juxta-Harlech, and Abermouth only. From L1301/5 (1688) to R9/6e (1701), only property in Corwen (Ddwyryd), Betws, Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr (t. Llysan), Llanfor and Llandrillo is included, except for R8/6 (1680) which only includes property in Llanfor and Llandrillo. Collectors: Evan Lloyd 1669-73, Griffith Roberts 1707-1718, Randle Jones 1725-1751, John Evans 1728, Thomas Jones 1752-1772. From R11/8 (1707) the Rhiwgoch estate is resumed. R17/16 (1728) omits p. Llandderfel and t. Llysan. From R30/9 (1751) onwards property in p's Llanfair-juxta-Harlech and Llandderfel are omitted. For the continuation of this collection, post 1772, see Collection I.

'Rental, freehold property'

A single, separate volume containing a rental which includes tenants from the following places: p's Wrexham, Ruabon, Llangollen, Erbistock, Gwersyllt, Marchwiail, Bryneglwys, Holt, Llandysilio[-yn-Iâl] and Llanarmon [-yn-Iâl], co. Denb., and p's Bangor Is-coed and Overton, co. Flint. Collectors: D. Parry, 1813, and E. Pickering 1814-1821.

Much Wenlock collection

The collection comprises property in p's Much Wenlock and Harley, Shropshire. Also details relating to Wenlock and Westwood tithes, and lists of limeburners. Collectors: Richard Collins, 1810-1838, Humphrey Hinton and Edward Jeffreys, 1839-1841, Humphrey Hinton, 1842-1847, and Edward Hinton 1848-1857.

Glan-llyn estate

The collection comprises property in p's Llandderfel, Llandrillo-yn-Edeirnion (including t. Branas), Llanfor, Gwyddelwern, Bettws Gwerfil-Goch, Llanfihangel y Traethau, Llanycil, Llanuwchllyn, Llanymawddwy, Mallwyd (transferred to the Cyfeiliog estate), Llangywer, Trawsfynydd, Llanfrothen and Llanfachreth, all in co. Mer., and in p's Penmachno, Clynnog and Llanbeblig (including properties in Caernarfon), co. Caern. This collection also contains the chief rents for some of the above parishes, including Llanfor, Llanuwchllyn, Llanfachreth, Llangywer, Llanycil, Llandrillo-yn-Edeirnion, Llanfihangel, Llanbeblig and Trawsfynydd; also, a statement of account of almshouses in Llanuwchllyn, R79-R121; election expenses in co. Mont. (1830s); and details of boats (and their owners) on Bala Lake; R83/7e (1828) contains a rental of estates had in exchange from Viscount Clive, consisting of property in p's Llanerfyl, Llangadfan and Llanfair Caereinion, co. Mont. By 1861, some of the above-named places have been gradually omitted from this collection, and only the following parishes in co. Mer. remain: Llandderfel, Llanycil, Llanuwchllyn, Llangywer, Trawsfynydd, Llanfor, Llandrillo and Llanfihangel y Traethau; and from R118/2 to R135/1i chief rents are contained for the following parishes in co. Mer. only: Llanfor, Llanuwchllyn, Trawsfynydd, Llangower, Llanycil, Llandrillo and Llanfihangel y Traethau. Collectors: Griffith Richards, 1809-1821, Samuel Hughes, 1824-1834, Pryce Jones, 1835-1839, John Williams, 1839-1864, John Williams (executor of the first named John Williams), 1865-1866, William Jones, 1867-1871, and Owen Hughes 1871-1879. R122/1b (1867) contains rents only for p's Llanfor, Llanycil, Llanuwchllyn, Llangower and Trawsfynydd, co. Mer., while R122/1h (1867) contains chief rents as specified above; R123/1g (1867) and all succeeding volumes contain the chief rents only, while the other rents of the Glan-llyn estate have been transferred (see R123/1a) to the collection entitled Farm and Cottage Rents. By R135/1i (1879), only the chief rents for the following parishes in co. Mer. remain: Llanfor, Llanuwchllyn, Llangywer, Llanycil and Llandrillo. Lordship/Manor of Cynllaith Owain chief rents

The Lordship/Manor of Cynllaith Owain chief rents collection comprises property in p. Llansilin, co. Denb., including t's Llansilin, Lloran, Moelfre, Estynllan, Priddbwll, Sycharth, Rhiwlas and Bodlith. From R64 to R92, 1808-1835, some cottage and enclosure rents are included with the chief rents, but chief rents only appear in the rentals from R94 to R151, 1837-1896. The rents are collected at Michaelmas, not Lady Day. Collectors: Samuel Lovett, 1808-1835, John Croxon, 1841-1842, Nathan Burlinson, 1852-1862, William Jones, 1863-1871, Owen Hughes, 1871-1879. Llansilin collection

The collection comprises property in p's Llansilin, Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, Llanarmon Mynydd Mawr, Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog, Llangadwaladr, Llansaffraid Glyn Ceiriog, co. Denb. Collectors: Samuel Lovatt, 1809-1837, David Jones, 1838, John Croxon, 1839-1851, Nathan Burlinson, 1851-1860. After 1860, property in p's Llansilin, Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog and Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, will be found in R116/3a and R117/2a (being rentals of estates in Shropshire and co. Denb. of which Sir Watkin Williams Wynn is seised in fee simple), then in the collection entitled Farm and Cottage Rents. Property in p. The Llangedwyn collection comprises property in p. Llangedwyn, co. Denb., p. Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, cos Mont. and Denb., and in p's Pennant, Hirnant, Llanwddyn, Llangynog, Llanfyllin, Meifod, Llansanffraid-ym-Mechain, Llanfechain and Llandrinio, co. Mont. Collectors: Samuel Lovatt, 1809-1837, David Jones, 1838 and 1839-1857 (part of the estate only), John Croxon, 1839-1851 (part of the estate only), Nathan Burlinson, 1852-1860 (part of the estate only), Joseph Owen Jones, 1857-1861 (part of the estate only). From R94 (1839) onwards, details regarding this collection will be found in two different places in each volume: the first number given contains that part of the estate situated in co. Denb., and the second number contains that part of the estate situated in co. Mont. After R116/2e (1861), property in p's Llangedwyn, Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, Pennant, Hirnant, Llanwddyn, Llanfyllin, Llansanffraid-ym-Mechain, will be found in one or more of the following rentals, before they appear together once again in the collection entitled Farm and Cottage Rents: R116/3d and R117/2c (being settled estates in cos Denb. and Mont.), and R116/3a and R117/2a (being estates of which Sir Watkin Williams Wynn is seised in fee simple). Dwyriw), Llanwyddelan (t. Treganol), Garthbeibio, Llanwddyn, Llanllugan and Welshpool, all in co. Mont. Chief rents for p's Llanfihangel-yng-Ngwynfa (t's Rhiwlas, Dolwar, Cadwnfa), Llanwddyn (t. Garthbwlch) and Llansanffraid [?-ym-Mechain], co. Mont., are included from R99 to R116 (1844-1861). Manor of Cyfeiliog chief rents

The collection comprises property in p's Penegoes, Llanwrin, Cemais, Darowen, Llanbryn-mair and Machynlleth (including t's Isygarreg and Uwchygarreg), all in co. Mont. Most of the rents were collected at Michaelmas; the date of collection is not always given. Collectors: J. Manor of Cyfeiliog

Manor of Cyfeiliog comprises (i) Mathafarn estate, property in p's Llanwrin, Darowen, Llanbryn-mair, Machynlleth, Penegoes and Cemais, co. Mont.; (ii) Rhiwsaeson estate, comprising property in p. Llanbryn-mair, co. Mont.; (iii) Tirymynech estate, comprising property in p's Penegoes, Machynlleth, Llanbryn-mair, Cemais, Llanwrin and Darowen, co. Mont. L1256 contains a rental, 1831, of cottages in the Manor of Cyfeiliog, including in p's Llanbryn-mair, [t. Tirymynech,] Cemais, Llanwrin, Darowen, Machynlleth and Penegoes, co. Mont. Property in p. Mallwyd, co. Mer., taken from the Glan-llyn agency, are contained in most volumes from R93 (1838) onwards. Collectors: Rev. Trefarclawdd and Overley Hall Colliery payments
