The memoir was originally intended as an introduction to Margaret Walsh's mathematical MSS [Fe 1/1-7: for references to the writing of the memoir see Sir John Walsh's diaries between 1852-9 Fg 1/19-24] but ended up as a lengthy biography of her. The vols include details of Margaret Walsh's life in India between 1776-86 (Fg 5/1, ff. 59-95) and descriptions of her two continental tours, in 1787-9 (Fe 5/1, ff. 104-13) and 1816-20 (Fe 5/1, ff. 149-79). The memoir contains a wealth of biographical information about the Benn (later Benn-Walsh) and Fowke families. A photocopy of the memoir is available in the India Office Library (Ref. Photo Eur. 32).

Deeds and documents received from Farrer & Co. of Lincolns Inn Fields, London, solicitors, per the British Records Association (parcel 2749) in October 1999 (NLW acc. no. C1999/12). These papers are supplemental to the Ormathwaite Papers, and mainly relate to the marriage settlement, mortgages, bankruptcy, receivership and executorship of Arthur Henry John Walsh (1859-1937), third baron Ormathwaite. The papers were accumulated by partners of Farrer & Co. who acted for Marquis Camden, Ormathwaite’s brother-in-law and main creditor, as well as acting as Ormathwaite’s estate receiver after his bankruptcy, and acting for his executors after his death. Included are papers relating to estates in Radnorshire, the Warfield Park estate (Bracknell, Berkshire), the Ormathwaite Hall estate (Keswick, Cumberland) and various freehold and leasehold properties in London and Middlesex, as well as a very few papers relating to the unsaleable remnants of an Irish estate (Counties Cork and Kerry). A further three boxes of papers relating to the family was received, together with a portrait of Jane Walsh and a collection of photographs. This deposit remains uncatalogued.
