[Mistake]

An abstract geometric pattern at odds with GVJ's other photographs. Photographs believed to have been taken subsequently display a black mark along the top suggesting camera malfunction. Could this image be a result of the camera having been dropped?

[Modern Photographs]

A variety of modern photographs connected with Gareth Vaughan Jones. These include a trip by Edward David to the place of GVJ's assassination ca.2005; copies of old postcards and family photographs; Chinese artefacts; Soviet propoganda posters from the 1930s brought home by GVJ.

[Mongolia & China]

Photographs believed to have been taken by Gareth Vaughan Jones in summer 1935. Most are of Mongolia, many being of The Great Mongolian Festival of the Princes at the Court of Prince Teh Wang. These show many of the tribesmen and their lifestyles. Included are a number of Prince Teh Wang (aka Prince Demchugdongrub), Mongolian military leader and his family; also Chinese General Tsai Ting Kai (aka Cai Tingkai). Some are annotated on the reverse. Included are pictures of monks, sacrificing of sheep, inside and outside yurts, wrestling etc.

[Mongolian Dog]

A large dog sniffing in the grass, its hindquarters blurred by movement. In the background can be seen a yurt and two carts.
