‘Documents and letters re inclosure of Cors Fochno’

Papers concerning the enclosure and drainage of Cors Fochno (Borth Bog), 1743-1829. For general contents see series level description. The file includes a release of the right to Wern Lery common by John Pierce of Lodge Park to Pryse Pryse of New Woodstock, 1799; an agreement for the construction of the Dovey embankment, 1816; and a brief list of occupiers with rights of common. There are letters to Pryse Pryse, James Morice of Moelcerney, William Cobb Gilbertson of Cefn Gwyn and David Joel Jenkins of Lampeter; correspondents include Thomas Lloyd of Peterwell, 1780, Thomas Jones of Machynlleth and Robert Williams of Moel Ynys and Bangor, 1816-1820, William Jones [?of Bangor] at Aberystwyth, 1819-1828, and Richard Griffiths of Gwynfryn, 1824-1825.

‘Documents re. Gogerddan and Mathafarn estates’

Documents mainly concerning the financial and legal affairs of the Gogerddan and Mathafarn estates, 1660-1790. They include a discharge by Edward Perry to Sir Richard Pryse for £75, 1660; a perambulation of the boundaries of the manor of Glyndyfrdwy, 1661; a sequestration order against Lewis Pryse in the suit of Mr Jodrell, plaintiff, 1707; schedules of mortgages and bond debts of John Pryse, Walter Pryse, John Pughe of Mathafarn, and Thomas Pryse, executor of Thomas Pryse, his step-father 1715-1738; a letter (copy) to Sir William Williams about a trespass by Charles and Rodericke Richardes; Lord Harrington’s letter (copy) with Mr Robinson’s translation concerning the war of the Austrian Succession, 1741; a ‘schedule of papers brought from the closet’; a list of charges of John Lloyd and Maria Charlotta his wife, defendants in a suit by John Pughe Pryse, infant, 1757; a declaration of trust by John Pughe Pryse in a mortgage by Thomas Johnes of Abermad, 1761; inventories of goods in rooms at Gogerddan belonging to John Pughe Pryse, 1768; and a receipt to Edward Loveden Loveden for documents relating to his Cardiganshire estate, 1790.

‘Election bills paid by W.W’

Original bundle containing accounts, bills and receipts for expenses mainly at Aberystwyth in connection with the election of Pryse Pryse for the Cardigan Boroughs,in 1841, paid by his agents, William Williams, and Oliver Lloyd, 1840-1843. Includes receipts for measuring voters’ distance by road in 1839, transport of voters by boat, painting a banner and gilding the coat of arms, and the valuation of houses in Aberystwyth for election purposes; notices to the overseers of the poor of claims to be inserted in the list of voters; relevant letters from Edward Williams of Aberystwyth and others; and ‘A Parody on a Certain Address to the Deluded Freeholders of the County of C____’

‘Election papers from 1816’

Original bundle containing mainly accounts and letters relating to elections in Cardiganshire, 1816-1853. The accounts include expenditure on the services of James Hughes of Aberystwyth, 1816, and James Evans, 1841, bills for musicians, mace bearers, flag bearer, chairman, constables, taverns, election dinners, etc. 1837-1852, a bank book of T.O. Morgan, chairman of Pryse Pryse’s election committee, 1849, and the election committee account book, 1852-1853. The letters are to Pryse Pryse and Pryse Loveden, with a copy of an outgoing letter by Jane Pryse. Correspondents of interest include B. Millingchamp of Llangoedmor Place, on a Roman Catholic Relief bill, 1821; Lewis Evans, town clerk of Cardigan, with a copy of a letter by Sir Charles Watkin Williams Wynn, on the desirablitiy of local Acts for the improvement of towns in Wales, 1829; and Henry Lewis Davies, curate of Troed-yr-Aur, requesting a permanent living, 1840. Other correspondents are John Davies of Newport, James Thomas of Newcastle Emlyn, Joseph Rees of the Red Cow, and Thomas Davies of Cardigan, about the claims (sometimes inflated) for election bills, with Mr Atwood’s observations and summary of the bills at Cardigan, Newcastle Emlyn and Aberaeron, 1852-1853,. The file also contains an officiial order for Pryse Pryse to attend the House of Commons, 1819.

‘Gorsfochno acts, papers, letters, etc.’

Parcel of papers concerning the enclosure and drainage of Cors Fochno (Borth Bog), 1781-1835, and claims to the allotments by other landowners, notably Davies, 1852-1866. For general contents see series level description. The file includes a valuation of allotments near Moel Ynys [1816]; letters and invoices from Charles Hassall of Tenby, 1813; Robert Williams, 1816-1822, Richard Griffithes of Bishops Castle, 1827-1847, Oliver Lloyd of Cardigan, 1835, Charles Mickleburgh of Montgomery, 1852-1862, Parry and Atwood, 1853-1864, Boys and Tweedie, 1856-1866, and an incomplete letter explaining the construction of the sluice at Ynyslas.

‘Jones & Atwood. Original Correspondence’

Original envelope containing letters to Capt. Edward Lewis Pryse and copies of his replies to his brother John, Matthew Davies of Penpompren, Matthew D. Williams of Cwmcynfelyn, Edward Davies and Mrs Davies of Tanybwlch, and others, 1852-1860. Most of the letters discuss the assertion of Pryse Loveden’r rights as lord of the manor of Genau’r-glyn, in response to landowners’ complaints about trespasses committed by mining prospectors on the farms of Blaennant, Doleruddlan, Lluestgotta and Cyneiniog, and about encroachments on the sheepwalks. The file also contains notes by Capt. Pryse and an information of intrusion commenced in the Court of the Exchequer by the Attorney General representing the Crown against Pryse Pryse and the family trustees, concerning Cwmsymlog mine, asserted by the Crown to be in the royal manor of Perfedd (Watermark 1862).

‘Leases granted by Mr John Lewis…upon the Llangors estate about the yr 1700.’

Leases by John Lewis of Coedmor in Cardiganshire and Hurst in Berkshire, of properties in the parishes of Llan-gors and Llanfihangel Nant Bran, 1683-1722. They include parcels of tithe land belonging to the rectory of Llan-gors; a house and smith’s shop, Y Clouty Bach, Coyd y Perthy, Garthe ir Moate, Tir Pen Twyn, Criggie Ycha, and The Lodge, Llan-gors; and Cwmb Llythlin with a corn mill, and Vanvelen in Llanfihangel Nant Bran. The majority include a reservation of the timber to John Lewis.

‘Ledger : Lead and copper mines on Sir Pryse Pryse’s estate’

Small notebook labelled ‘Ledger’, containing accounts of the ore sold and royalties from lead and copper mines on Sir Pryse Pryse’s estate, and notes on the leases at East Darren, Grogywynion, South Darren, Bronfloyd, New Bronfloyd, Cambrian Mine, Blaenceulan, South Cambrian Mine, Old Bog Pool, Cefngwirion, Bryn Dyfi or Neuadd-lwyd, North Cardiganshire or Tal-y-bont, Bryn yr Afr, Cwm Brwyno and Ystrad Einon, 1880-1883, and copies of returns, 1877-1880

‘Letters and papers relating to the manor of Nantyarian’

Papers deriving from the claim of Pryse Pryse to the lordship or manor of Nantyrarian, Cardiganshire, disputed by the Crown which asserted its right within the surrounding lordship of Perfedd, 1745-1867. The file contains correspondence with the Office of Woods and Forests, 1833-1834; earlier letters from George Jones of Rhoskillan (Rhoscellan) to John Hedley at Dyffryn Melindwr, 1745, and Thomas Lloyd of Abertrinant to Mr Waller, which also mentions a shipwreck in the lordship of Genau’r-glyn, 1747; an agreement for a mining lease by the trustees of Thomas Pryse’s will, 1754; a case investigating the attendance of inhabitants of Nantyrarian at the manorial court of Perfedd, 1756, citing the actions of Lewis Morris in 1746; a sketch taken in 1833 from a map by Lewis Morris; an account of fines in the court leet of Perfedd, 1756, a court leet presentment from the manor of Nantyrarian, 1833; and a demand for rent on an encroachment in the manor of Perfedd, 1867.

‘Letters and papers relating to tithe commutation, tithe of milk… and liability of coppice wood to tithe’

Original parcel of valuations, letters and legal papers mainly relating to tithe commutation, tithe of milk and the liability of coppice wood to tithe on the Gogerddan estate, 1749-1845, enclosing a further bundle of letters, 1842-1845. The letters and legal papers, 1753-1845, reveal the differences at issue between Pryse Pryse and the tithe owner, Sir Bruce Chichester, providing historical details of the tithe owners and impropriators. Other letters concern the Cors Fochno enclosure, Hodgeston lease and the tithe commutation of Eaton Hastings, Berkshire. The main correspondents are Pryse Pryse and the tithe commissioners; others include Oliver Lloyd of Cardigan, J.J. Peele of Shrewsbury, Thomas Salt of Shrewsbury and the Gogerddan agents

‘Letters and plans, James auctioneer’

Original envelope containing letters to Pryse Pryse Pryse of Lodge Park, George Griffiths Williams and David Philip, from John E. James of Aberystwyth, auctioneer, surveyor and valuer, and relevant third party letters, 1894-1896. The letters mainly concern the sale of houses and land on the Gogerddan estate at Penbontrhydybeddau, Tal-y-bont, Glasbwll, Aberystwyth and Llanbadarn Fawr, including Penygraig, Penyfron, Cwmcynfelyn, Cwmere, the Gogerddan Arms at Ynyslas, and Rhydtir Issaf, tenanted by John Humphreys. There is also a copy of a contract for the sale of gardens and fields at Tal-y-bont, with plan, 1895. Two letters discuss the proposal for Tal-y-bont agricultural show, 1896.

‘Letters from Lord Milford, Mr Loveden and Mr Woolstonehulm’

Original bundle of letters and papers concerning the dispute with Lord Milford over Moreton Colliery, 1773-1779. Correspondents and recipients include Lewis Pryse, B. Allen of Cresselly, Lord Milford, Edward Loveden Loveden, Joseph Woolstenhulme and James Child of Begeli. The file also contains a report on the state of the colliery at Moreton by Jospeh Woolstenhulme, 1779; a case and opinion, reciting the original agreement between Lewis Pryse and Sir John Philipps in 1757; and accounts, 1778-1779.

‘Letters Re Bakers Lease Rhydapenau Farm’

Original envelope containing letters to George Griffiths Williams about the lease of Rhydypennau farm, from the lessee John Baker, auctioneer, and Arthur Johnson Hughes, solicitor of the Town Clerk’s Office, Aberystwyth, about the terms of the lease and the financial expenses incurred by Mr Baker, 1880-1889.

Gwynne of Glanlery, enclosing the resolution of a vestry to extend the road at Borth, 1854. The file also contains a valuation at Rhydypennau, 1853, a copy of an agreement between Pryse Loveden and the commissioners of the Turnpike Trust to widen the road from Aberystwyth to Ponterwyd near Parson’s Mill; and a small number of estate accounts and receipts, 1851-1853.

Original parcel labelled ‘Miss Loveden’s receipts 1833’, comprising bills and receipts, actually dated 1827-1841, mainly for building work, repairs and furnishings at her house in Bridge Street by various Aberystwyth tradesmen including Edward and John Lumley, Lewis Hopkins, William Williams, glazier and painter, and William Jones; some carriage and saddlery repairs; and the salary of William Williams for managing her affairs
