Llanddewi Ystradenni, Abercamddwr, p's Llanbister and Llanddewi Ystradenni, Cefn Bronllys, Bronllys, Trouscoed, Tyn llidiart, Pantygravolen and Moel Willim, p. Llanbister, all of which were purchased from R. L. B. by Sir John Walsh [for £9,463. Acreage 8-900 a. Annual rent £365 - see Sir John's entry in his diary in Jan. 1838, Fg 1/10, p. 211]. Account Book of John Benn Walsh containing details of monies invested in mortgages and the funds and of interest received, together with valuations of his properties and shareholdings and of annual income derived from the same, 1801, 1802, 1806 (Fd 1/1) and a similar account book containing periodic valuations by John Benn Walsh of his landed estate in Cos. Kerry and Cork, Ireland, Cumberland, Berkshire and co. Rad. and of his stocks and shares, and continued after his death in 1825 by his son, John Walsh, 1803-66 (Fd 1/2). The last vol. also contains details of stocks held in the French funds, 1820-5, Danish bonds held, 1823-4, and railway shares held, 1845-7; list of purchasers of properties in p. Warfield, 1764-1837, 1837 and observations on agricultural conditions on various parts of the estate including a note that the co. Rad. tenants were 'plodding and frugal' and an appreciation of the electoral significance of the co. Rad. estate and of the borough of Cefnllys which was in the family's control, 1829.

(pp. 25-59) including an account of a meeting with Sir James Graham (pp. 54-5); a visit to his father's Cumberland estate, 17 Oct. - 2 Nov. where he met the poet Southey (p. 66) and, unfortunately, burnt the papers of his father's uncle Dr Brownrigg the chemist [see DNB, vii, p. 85] (p. 70); a brief visit to the Ravenshead glass works (p. 74); another lengthy stay in Edinburgh in vain pursuit of Lady Charlotte Charteris, 13 Jan. - 20 Mar., 1823 (pp. 111-78), including an account of a meeting with Sir Walter Scott who related a number of anecdotes including one told to him by Castlereagh about seeing a ghost in Ireland (pp. 131-6); a visit to co. Rad. where he was sheriff for that year and giving an account of the Great Sessions, 4-19 Apr. (pp. 181-5); references to Captain Rock, arson and Whiteboyism during a visit to his Irish estates in Apr. (pp. 194-5, 198) and of a stay in Spa, Belgium, 24 Aug. - 23 Sept. (pp. 228-48) and Brussels, 26 Aug. - (pp. 248-53) which is continued in Fg 1/4. The diary ends (pp. 254-75) with a review of his current situation, his character and prospects and of his failure to make a mark on society, a failure which he attributes to the scattered nature of his landed estates, to the seclusion of Warfield 'Berkshire being but a county of small villas' [i.e. bereft of large estates with connexions] and to his father's sole interest in estate management. This review, which is continued in Fg 1/4, pp. 20-9, 40-80, 110-30 also includes a brief biography of his great uncle John Walsh and also of his father.
