Extract from the Court Roll of the "Curia. quinta Commoti de Kymerghi", held at Dynbiegh, before Sir Thomas Salisbury, Lieutenant of the Lord Giles Daubeny, chamberlain of the Lord the King. Steward of the Lordship of Denbiegh, on Monday next before the Feast of the Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary [8 Dec.], 16 Henry VII [1500]. At this Court, the lands and tenements of the late Griffith ap Madoc ap Deicus in the town of Lloyn' and elsewhere within the lordship of Denbigh were proclaimed, having came to the King's hands because the said Griffith was a Welshman holding by Welsh tenure, and died without heirs within the third degree of relationship. Whereupon Ycecka ap Llewelin ap Madoc made an offer for the premises, but subsequently Richard Smythe, and Margery, his wife, produced closed letters of the Prince directed to Sir Thomas Salisbury, Knight, deputy of Sir Giles Daubeney, Lord de Daubeney, Chamberlain of the King of England, Chief Steward of the Lordship of Dynbiegh, recited herein at length, in English, showing that it has come to his knowledge "that certain landes lying in the compote of Kymergh within the lordship there, late belonging to con Gruff' ap Mad' ap Deicus deceased by reason of his dethe be fallen in to oure handes, Wer'upon proclamacons in the Courtes there have been made according to the custome of that lordship, and offrees for the same to the valour of xliiij li. xiij s. iiij d. So it is nowe that cure Welbelovid Richard Smythe, Porter of oure Castell there hathe pursued unto us and oure counsail of the said lands offering the said somme for the same, etc., we remembering the Gode service he hathe doon unto my most dred lord and ffader the Kyng and dayly dothe unto us ther and for that also he hathe con xx ti 1. of the said summe and iiij li. xiij s . iiij d for his fyne unto oure cowffers, be content that he have and enjoy the said lands puttyng in good sureties, etc. We wol and desire you to delyver unto hym and Margery his wyffe astate in the said landes accordingly to the gode usaige and custome of the said lordship; Given under oure signet at the Castell of.
