Four letters, mostly in English, May-October 1831, May 1834, from John Jones (Tegid), Oxford, to Henry Jones, Merthyr Tydfil, mainly concerning Tegid's dispute with William Bruce Knight on the proposed reform of Welsh orthography (see W. B. Knight, Remarks, Historical and Philological, on the Welsh Language (Cardiff, 1830) and John Jones, Reply to the Rev. W. B. Knight's 'Remarks' on Welsh Orthography (Cardiff, 1831)).
Tegid quotes excerpts from letters of support received from Aneurin Owen (f. 1 verso), the Rev. Walter Cecil Davies (f. 2), George Phillips, BA, (f. 2) and Walter Davies (Gwallter Mechain) (f. 5). Also included are holograph poems, in Welsh (ff. 5 verso-6, 7, 10), including 'Merch ieuanc mewn darvodedigaeth', 1833 (f. 7), which was published in the Cambrian Quarterly Magazine and Celtic Repertory, 5 (1833), 56.

Further typescript drafts of Mary Ellis's 'Walter Davies (Gwallter Mechain) 1761-1849', collated by the cataloguer and apparently preceding the drafts in ME 5/3. They consist of two almost complete drafts (ME 6/1-2), with a further copy of ff. 83-197 only, as well as disconnected fragments (22 ff.) from at least two different copies (ME 6/3). Each copy has at least some emendations in the hand of ME.

Transcripts and notes of Mari Ellis relating to Walter Davies (Gwallter Mechain), comprising transcripts of his correspondence, mainly from NLW MSS 1804-5E, 1808-9E, [1980s], [?2004] (ME 7/1-3); transcripts from his diaries, mainly NLW MS 1757B (ME 7/4); transcripts and notes concerning the provincial eisteddfodau of 1819-1834, [1990s] (ME 7/5); notes concerning Davies's connections with Penmaendyfi (ME 7/6); and translations into Welsh of letters of Walter Davies, Jane Davies and others mainly relating to their time at Llanrhaeadr[-ym-Mochnant, Montgomeryshire] (ME 7/7).

Journal,

A notebook written in pencil by Edward Williams, 'Iolo Morganwg', and containing an account of his journey from London to Merthyr, 29 May - (?) 24 June 1802. A few of the pages are now very indistinct and almost illegible. The places mentioned include Tatsworth, Oxford, Woodstock, Enstone, Long Compton and Rollright circle, Tidmanton, Alderminster, Stratford upon Avon, Wooton [sic], Henly [sic], Birmingham, Bromwich, Westbury, Bilston, Wolverhampton, Tettenhall, Shiffnal [sic], Madley ? [Madeley], Colebrook Dale, Buildwas, Hatcham, Salop (Shrewsbury), Crew Green, Meivod, Llanfair, Newtown, Ceri, Felindre, Bugeildy, Llanfair Waterdine, Knighton, Norton, Presteign, New Radnor, Old Radnor, Glasdre [? Gladestry], Pain's Castle, Clirow, Hay, Glasbury, Llyswen, Capel (y) ffin, and Brecon. Among the individuals briefly mentioned are the Reverend Walter Davies ['Gwallter Mechain'], curate of Meifod, with whom, 14 June, Iolo Morganwg sets out on a survey of South Wales, Mr. Weyman 'at Griffin Ffloyd', Mr. Richard Williams of the Duke's Arms, Knighton, Thos. Grove, Esqr., of Cwm Elen, and Mr. [ ] Morgan, wool-stapler, of Knighton. There are also some notes on the Vale of Glamorgan, including an air, and hymn stanzas, e.g. 'Rhodio gyda Duw'.

A 'poetical' exercise book of W. J. Roberts ('Gwilym Cowlyd') largely containing annotated transcripts of 'englynion' and other verses of the period 1820-1830 by Evan Evans ('Ieuan Glan Geirionydd'), William Jones ('Gwilym Cawrdaf'), Rowland Parry ('Ieuan Carn Dochan'), [William Williams] ('Gwilym Cyfeiliog'), Henry Griffith ('Hare Goch o Wynedd'), and Walter Davies ('Gwallter Mechain'). The collection is based on information received from Mary Richards ('Mair Risiart'), Darowen Vicarage, and contains copious extracts from 'Y Begeryn', being a manuscript in her possession containing impromptu verses by visiting poets, etc. The volume also contains transcripts of two letters, the one from J[ohn] Parry ['Bardd Alaw'] to the Reverend T[homas] Richards, Aberrhiw, 1822 (the success of Evan Evans ['Ieuan Glan Geirionydd'] as candidate for North Wales for a medal), and the other from Evan Evans ['Ieuan Glan Geirionydd'] to the Reverend T[homas] Richards, Caerwys [1816] (the recipient's promotion to the living of Caerwys, etc.); a list of books bought of the administrator of W[illiam] L[ewis] Walker [rector of Trefriw], 1863; and poetry by 'Gwilym Cowlyd' partly described as 'Y Ffetan Ysmaldod'.

Letters of John Jones (Tegid)

A volume made up of fourteen letters, 1819-1851, from John Jones (Tegid or Ioan Tegid, 1792-1852), Oxford and later Nevern, to various correspondents. The details are as follows: six letters, 1819-1826, to the Rev. Thomas Richards, Berriew (the education of the addressee's brother and of E. Evans [probably 'Ieuan Glan Geirionydd'], a 'cywydd' on the death of Mrs Bosanquet, literary matters, adverse criticism from the bishop of Llandaff [William van Mildert] of a proof-sheet of the edition of the Welsh Prayer Book which the writer had undertaken to superintend); four letters, 1820-1824, to the Rev. David Richards, Llansilin (the education of the addressee's younger brother [Lewis], literary matters, the addressee's marriage, etc.); one letter, 1839, to Miss Angharad Lloyd [sic] (the Liber Landavensis is now in the press, he has completed his Welsh version of Isaiah direct from the Hebrew); one letter, 1846, to Owen Williams, Waenfawr (literary matters, criticism of the addressee's proposed 'Vocabulary'); one letter, 1851, to [Ebenezer Thomas] Eben Fardd (re. adjudicating the 'pryddestau' on 'Golygfa Moses &c'); and one letter, 1850, to the Rev. Richard Richards [Meifod] (he is glad to hear of the addressee's success, a proposed monument to Bishop William Morgan and the Rev. Walter Davies (Gwallter Mechain) at Llanrhaiadr yn Mochnant, plans for a commentary in Welsh on the Epistle to the Galatians etc.). Also included in the volume are extracts, 1845, from a manuscript of Rowland Hugh 'o'r Graienyn ger y Bala' ('Brawd Nain Ioan Tegid o du ei fam oedd Rowland Hugh'), transcripts of two letters, the originals of which are to be found in Peniarth MS 11, viz. a letter, 1847, from [John Jones] Tegid, Nevern to the Lady Charlotte E. Guest and a letter, 1860, from Tho[ma]s Stephens, Merthyr Tydfil to W. W. E. Wynne, Esq., and an outline of 'Tegid's Feet [shoes] drawn at the Vicarage Darowen at the request of ?M. D. Inset at the end of the volume are transcripts of Montgomeryshire pedigrees, etc. Much of the material in the volume has been transcribed from other volumes now in the Cwrtmawr Collection (e.g. MSS 200, 222, 242 and 243) and there are references to such sources as 'un o lyfrau Maesglas Mallwyd' (transcribed in 1857) (p. 269), a manuscript in the hand of Robert Arthur (p. 342), 'Llyfr ym meddiant Lowri Jones' (p. 380), etc. A note pasted on the inside of the upper cover states 'This Vol. was copied by Owen Jones (brother of Myrddin Fardd) from a MS Vol. ... in the handwriting of Lewis Morris [Cwrtmawr MS 200] now at Bryntanad, Llanerfyl Montgomerys[hire] (Richards) E. Breese'. Owen Jones was for a short time a private tutor at BrynTanad (see The Dictionary of Welsh Biography). The spine is lettered 'Mannoethwy MSS'.

A note-book (pp. 1-80) and miscellaneous papers (pp. 81-268) containing notes, lists, extracts, transcripts, etc., in the hand of Edward Williams ('Iolo Morganwg') bound together in one volume. Page 1 is inscribed 'Cynnulliadau Tuag att Hanes Eisteddfodau Caerfyrddin, Caerwys, ag eraill Casgledig (gan mwyaf) yng Ngwynedd gan Iolo Morganwg', and this first section contains: a version of the 'statute' of Gruffudd ap Cynan as allegedly confirmed at an 'eisteddfod' held at Caerwys, co. In three instances the blank verso and margins of copies of a printed handbill (English) containing proposals, 1793, for publishing The Celtic Remains (vol. I by Lewis Morris, vol. II by Walter Davies) and of a printed handbill (Welsh) announcing an 'eisteddfod' to be held at Caerwys in 1798 under the patronage of the Gwyneddigion Society have been used for writing notes. Two volumes entitled 'Hen Gofion. Yr Ysgrepan neu Wyau Nythau Nathan', being a collection of autobiographical and other material compiled by Nathan Dyfed. The volumes include, in addition to the autobiographical material, notes and reminiscences relating to Glamorgan, its people and customs, a vocabulary of the Dyfed dialect, notes on 'eisteddfodau' mainly in Glamorgan, 1831-1888, an account of friendly societies in the Merthyr Tydfil district, poetry by Nathan Dyfed and others, a copy of Gwallteriana: sef y traethawd buddugol gan ...
