The file comprises a notebook which contains notes by Roland Mathias whilst at Oxford, [1933x1938], and lecture notes, 1944-1951. Also included is correspondence, 1931-1936, including letters from Roland Mathias, and letters congratulating him on his first class honours degree, 1936, together with miscellaneous papers (this bundle includes some items pertaining to Caterham School). In addition, the file contains notes relating to Roland Mathias's dissertation, 'The Economic Policy of the Board of Trade 1696-1714', 1936-1938; cuttings from the Jesus College magazine, 1933-1938; and letters, notes and printed leaflets relating to the Oxford University Students' Campaign, 1934, to promote the Christian faith.

Miscellaneous papers, 1958, 1962 and 1964, relating to the Herbert Strutt School, Belper, Derbyshire, where Roland Mathias served as Headmaster between 1958 and 1964, including typescript copies of the 'Founder's Day Report', 1962. Also included are related newspaper cuttings, 1959x1966; and a report by Roland Mathias following his Schoolmaster-Studentship at Balliol College, 1961.

Pembroke Dock Grammar School

The file contains various papers relating to Pembroke Dock Grammar School, 1949-[?1959], including printed copies of the school's reports, 1953-1957, and copies of The Penvro, 1954-1958; together with manuscript and typescript copies of articles printed in The Penvro, 1949-1958, which appear to have been written by Roland Mathias; programmes for various events, including the ceremonial opening of the school, 1955, and prize-giving ceremonies, notes for speeches and an article, 'The Grammar School, Pembroke: an experiment in education for agriculture', 1955-1958.

The file contains cuttings from the magazine The Cowleian, 1938-1941; together with cuttings from the Carlisle Grammar School magazine The Carliol, 1945-1946; and material relating to the St Clement Danes Holborn Estate Grammar School, including incomplete copies of the magazine The Dane, 1946-1949. Also included is a typescript copy of the 'Account-book of the management of Sarah Cowley's estate', [1942], which appears to have been used for an article by Roland Mathias on the Cowley Trust; a transcript of Sarah Cowley's will, and notes relating to the history of St Helens and Lancashire, 1932, [1938x1942].

Among the papers are manuscript and typescript copies of poems by him; his tribute to Mansel Thomas published in Welsh Music, (1986), together with programme notes for the Llantilio Crossenny music festival, 1976, which included 'Raiders' Dawn' by Mansel Thomas ('Craswall' by Roland Mathias was among the poems featured in the song cycle); recollections of Harold Wilson, [1992x2000]; 'Poems by Paul Ramsey echoing Roland Mathias', 1989; notes regarding Whitsun riot [1963]; notes concerning some Anglo-Welsh writers, [1980x1990]; and two typescript poems by Elwyn Davies. In addition, the file contains research notes, 1940-1943, regarding mining in Cardiganshire (later used for the short story 'Digression into miracle'); papers, 1957-1958 and 1998, relating to the Pageant of Pembroke, 1958, including copies of the narrator's script by Roland Mathias; correspondence and notes, 1980-1983, relating to Henry Vaughan, with a script, [?1972], for a television programme about Breconshire which refers to the poet; and typescript drafts of 'A history of Wales', intended for the Pall Mall Press, together with related notes, cuttings and letters, 1968-1985.

Talks and lectures

Papers relating to talks and lectures by Roland Mathias, [1943]-1982 (with gaps), a number of which discuss Anglo-Welsh literature and writers. Also included is a typescript copy of poems for a poetry reading at the Reardon Smith Lecture Theatre, 1968, which include 'Absalom in the Tree' and 'Indictment' by Roland Mathias; and copies of the radio talk by him entitled 'The Best of the Anglo-Welsh?', 1963.

T. Harri Jones

Three copies of a script, [1972-1973], for a television programme about T. Harri Jones, which appears to have been written, and possibly presented, by Roland Mathias. Also included are typescript copies of poems by T. Harri Jones, 1973; and a cutting of a review by Roland Mathias, 1977, of The collected poems of T. Harri Jones.

The file contains mainly typescripts (including drafts), [1974], 1977-1986, of book reviews by Roland Mathias for various periodicals, including Poetry Wales, The Powys Review, Poetry Wales, Ninnau, British book news, Book news from Wales, and The Western Mail. Also included amongst The Powys Review papers is a copy of his article, 'John Cowper Powys and 'Wales': a limited study'.

Correspondence, 1977, including draft letters by Roland Mathias, relating to entries by him on Myfanwy Haycock and Kathleen Freeman included in The dictionary of Welsh biography, 1941-1970 (London, 2001); together with typescript copies of both articles.
