Miscellanea by W. J. Roberts ('Gwilym Cowlyd') - notes on Welsh books, literary figures, the 'chart of Queen Elizabeth for holding the Caerwys Eisteddfod, 1568', 'Achau teulu Pentref y Foelas', extracts from a Welsh pedigree book by Owen Gruffydd in the possession of Owen Jones ('Meudwy Mon') (Wynnstay MS 6), a note of reservation of a right to the Glan Geirionydd Bardic Union to hold Gorsedd Meetings at the Taliesin monument in Glan Geirionydd, 1895; and a transcript of a book of medical recipes.

A collection of poems, medical and veterinary recipes, and miscellanea entitled 'Ail Biser Sioned sef Casgliad Cadwalader Davies [Gwyddelwern] wrth ei bleser . . .', with some additions. The poems include 'carolau', 'cerddi', 'cywyddau' and 'englynion' by Hugh Morys, Dafydd Nanmor, Maredudd ap Rhys, William Wynne, John [Siôn] Cadwaladr, Jonathan Hughes, Lewis Morris ('Llywelyn Ddu'), Ellis Roberts, Rees Ellis, Roger Thomley, Ellis Cadwaladr, Matthew Owen, Edmwnd Prys, Dafydd Manuel and others. A valentine from Cadwaladr Davies to Jane Jones is dated 14 February 1749.

Three music books bought by Isaac Williams 'of Mr. Parry, Relieving Officer, Dolgellau, Sept. 1903' and bound together into a single volume. They contain hymn-tunes, anthems and psalm-tunes, mainly by John Williams, Dolgellau, with a few tunes by R[ichard] Mills ['Rhydderch Hael'], one by I. R. Ellis, Dolgellau, 1841, and traditional and anonymous tunes; a poem entitled 'Amgylchiadau Marwolaeth Crist', an 'englyn' ('Y Farchnad Ysprydol'), 'englynion' by 'Shion Rhydderch', three hymns ('Mae'r gwaed a redodd ar y Groes', 7 stanzas, and 'Wrth edrych ar y sail', 4 stanzas, 'Ni'm diystyrir gan fy Nuw', 1 stanza), and a recipe for a cough.

The prescription book of Daniel Lewis, M.D., Plas Llangeitho.

A medical student's notebook, [?1860s], containing mostly medical notes and medicinal recipes.
The volume includes notes on scarlet fever (f. 30 recto-verso), on typhoid fever, taken mostly from Thomas Hawkes Tanner's Manual of the Practice of Medicine (see 5th edn (London, 1965), pp. 166-171) (ff. 35 verso-38 verso), and on the pelvic bones and female regenerative organs, taken from Fleetwood Churchill's On the Theory and Practice of Midwifery (see 3rd edn (London and Dublin, 1855), pp. 2-52 passim) (ff. 40 verso-62); as well as general 'Notes on Clinical Surgery', concerning bone fractures and various other conditions, with repeated references to Drs Cameron and Morton (ff. 67-79). Also included are medicinal recipes for stimulants, tonics, alteratives and antacids (ff. 32 verso-34 verso); extracts from the 'Royal Free Hospital Pharmacopoe[i]a' (ff. 63-66 verso, Latin); and horse and cattle medicines (ff. 25-28).

A volume, c. 1820, containing notes on the astrological practice of medicine and miscellaneous medical recipes, apparently compiled mostly from printed sources, notably Richard Saunders, The Astrological Judgement and Practice of Physick (London, 1747) and Nathaniel Williams, Pharmacopoeia, or Medical Admonitions in English and Welsh (Trevecka, 1793-6).

Farming account book originally belonging to David Evans of Ayngstree, Clifton-on-Teme, Worcestershire, who seems to have moved there from the Llandysul area of Cardiganshire. The volume comprises accounts, 1897-1915, of sales of farming produce and of wages and allowances to servants and labourers (ff. 1-31, 148 verso-67 verso, 173 verso-7); a few veterinary, household and culinary recipes (ff. 2, 16, 30 recto-verso, 31 verso-2); and family and other memoranda. There are also farming accounts and memoranda, 1943-1968, probably from the Llandysul area (ff. 33 verso-41 verso, 144-6 verso, 172-4).

Notebook, 1834-1861, of the Rev. Evan David, Y Groes-faen, Llantrisant, Glamorgan, containing sermons; accounts and other particulars, 1845-1856, relating to Fforest-fawr and other farms in the Llantrisant area (ff. 6-9, 10 verso-11 verso, 14-15); medical and domestic recipes (ff. 5, inverted text 59 recto-verso); and a list of those pledging themselves to total abstinence (inverted text ff. 51 recto-verso, 52 verso). A newspaper account of the funeral of Evan David is on f. 70 verso.

A volume containing recipes, household and medicinal but mainly relating to the craft of bookbinding (ff. 5-10); a list of books lent, 1827-1837, from an unspecified library, with observations on their condition (inverted text ff. 44 verso-7 verso); notes on the rudiments of music (ff. 2-4, originally pasted together onto f. 1); with late nineteenth and early twentieth-century additions by William Morris, Cydweli.

Prescription book, 1892-1899, of D. Thomas, Chemists (Cardiff) Ltd, which includes names of patients and dates alongside the formulae. The front cover bears the inscription 'Register of Members' (presumably of the Pharmaceutical Society). Inserted at the beginning of the volume is a typescript letter, dated 8 March 1950, from D. Thomas, Chemists of Cardiff to the National Library of Wales and inserted at the back of the volume (ff. 89-90 verso) is a typescript letter, dated 10 July 1902, from the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, with a printed copy of an extract from the London Gazette relating to new Society regulations passed, 5 June 1902, at Whitehall. Also included are medicinal and veterinary recipes inside the frontispiece and on f. i, together with rough memoranda on ff. 87 verso-88.

These are in the autograph of Edward Williams, 'Iolo Morganwg', and they include the poems now known as 'Cywyddau'r Ychwanegiad'. A volume written in several hands of the seventeenth century and containing Welsh poetry mainly of a religious nature in strict and free metre ('cwndidau', 'cywyddau', 'penillion', etc .), a few medical and veterinary recipes, some in English, Welsh triads (f. 33 verso, 'llyma drioedd pawl'), and (ff. 36 verso, 40 verso) two items of religious verse in triplet metre in English. The poets whose work is represented are Thomas Lle'n (Thomas Lle'n Daio Pwel), Lle'n Daio Pwel, Thomas ap Ieuan ap Rys, Siankin Thomas, Gronw Wiliam, Davydd ap Risiart, Howell Siankin, Ieuan ap Rys 'o verthyr kynon', Wiliam Prys, Sion Siankin 'o benllin', Ll'n Sion, Sion(n) y Kent, Thomas Harry Morgan, Rys Goch, Howel Swrdwal, Iolo Goch, Howel D'd ap Ieann [sic] ap Rys, Davydd Ddu Hiraddig, Sion Tydr, Risiart D'd, Rees Pritchard (Rhys Prichard), Watkin Powell, and Jenk: [Richard]. Ff. 42 recto-69 verso contain poetical compositions by Rhys Prichard ['Yr Hen Ficer'], one dated 1616, and someone has supplied page references (in pencil) where possible to [Y Seren Foreu, neu Ganwyll y Cymry. Gan Rhys Pritchard A.M. . . . (Llanymddyfri: Rhys Tomas, 1770)]; there are, however, some differences between the manuscript and the printed text and not all the items in the manuscript are to be found in the printed volume. The handwriting of ff. 73 recto-74 verso is the same as that of NLW MS 13072B and I. A. Williams MS 7 and the contents of these pages relate in part to the year 1660. The last item in the volume is an incomplete copy of a long series of religious 'englynion' according to the letters of the alphabet by [Lewis Glyn Cothi]. There are a few annotations by Edward Williams, 'Iolo Morganwg', and a piece of paper bearing the name 'Taliesin Williams (Ab Iolo)' has been pasted in at the beginning of the volume.
