Personal notebooks and address books

The series comprises pocket notebooks, 1929-[1970s], and address books,[1930]-[1990], kept by Eirene White, containing rough notes, lists of names and addresses, notes on travels, engagements, etc.

Address book

The file consists of an address book kept by a secretary or friend of Lady White and containing notes of addresses, c. 1980-c. 1990.

Foreign travel notes, speech notes, press cuttings etc.

The series comprises personalia and mementos accumulated by Eirene White, 1920-1996, including souvenirs of university life and lecture notes, material deriving from the Second World War, material collected during her trips abroad, articles and pamphlets published by her, speech and lecture notes and papers relating to the award of the life peerage in 1970 and other honours and distinctions awarded to Lady White, and papers concerning the writing of Eirene White, The Ladies of Gregynog (1985).

Souvenirs and mementos

The file comprises souvenirs and stray personal items collected by Eirene White during the course of her life and career. They include copies of her curriculum vitae, references and testimonials, invitations and tickets of admission to notable events, a ration book etc.

Papers deriving from Eirene White's early life

The file consists of correspondence and papers, including many printed items, deriving from Eirene White's early life and career, notably her period as an undergraduate student at Somerville College, Oxford, and as a Labour politician.

University lecture notes

The file comprises notes and essays written by Eirene Jones while an undergraduate student at Somerville College, Oxford.

Personalia

This file comprises a small quantity of personal items relating to Eirene White's life and career. They include her MA degree certificate of the University of Oxford, 1940, an undated membership card of the National Union of Journalists, a copy of her will made in August 1944, copies of articles which she wrote for publication, and the text of her 'Personal View' broadcast on the radio during January 1971.

World War Two

The file consists of various printed and typescript materials, including a few press cuttings, 1944-1945, acquired by Eirene White. Most relate to the conclusion of hostilities and the signing of the peace treaties. They include the texts of broadcasts made and speeches delivered by politicians and public figure at this time.

Congratulatory messages

The file consists of letters and messages, 1975-1978, sent to Lady White extending congratulations on appointments which have been given to her and distinctions conferred upon her. Copies of her replies are attached in some cases.

Domestic politics

The series comprises correspondence and papers relating to political subjects, among them social services, the House of Lords, pensions, housing, regionalism and metrication. Several of the files relate to the Labour Party.

Workers' control

The file comprises printed items, typescripts and press cuttings relating to industrial relations, the role of the trades unions, the nationalised industries and the relationship of management and labour.

The Fabians

The file comprises miscellaneous printed items, including several issues of Fabian Society, 1992-1993, relating to the Fabians. There is also a copy of the illustrated booklet 100 Years of Fabian Socialism, 1884-1984 (1984).
