Account book, 1846-1856, of Rowland Thomas ('Idris Ddu', 1789-1856) of Merthyr Tudful, co. Glamorgan, containing records of payments to members of the Solid Rock of Wales Society ('Cymdeithas Cadarn Graig y Cymry') meeting at the Harp, Penllwynderi, Merthyr, together with other miscellaneous accounts and memoranda, including an account of William Howel's journey with Abel Evans (d. 1866) and the Mormons from Merthyr to St Louis, Missouri, 1849 (ff. 79-81); additions, 1859-1868, in the hand of Rowland Thomas's son, William R. Thomas, include verses in Welsh (ff. 26v, 119v), and brief details of literary competitions at the National Eisteddfod, Rhuthun, 1868 (ff. 118v-19).

A notebook containing prose and poetry compositions, 1856-1858, mostly in Welsh, by the Reverend John Lloyd James ('Clwydwenfro', 1835-1919). Notes of publication in Welsh newspapers and periodicals, 1856-1857, are appended to some of the compositions.

Two essays in Welsh (one incomplete) on the Taf valley in counties Carmarthen and Pembroke by the Reverend John Lloyd James ('Clwydwenfro', 1835-1919) (ff. 1-39); two letters, 1895, from Jonathan N. Davies ('Carnalaw'), Liverpool, to 'Clwydwenfro' discussing the latter's poetry (ff. 40-5v); and poetry by 'Carnalaw' and 'Clwydwenfro'.

A volume belonging to the Rev. Ellis Thomas Davies, Independent minister, Abergele, containing poems and greetings in English and Welsh, autographs and sketches, 1849-1885, mainly by other Independent ministers, including Hugh Hughes (Huw Tegai), [1849x1864] (f. 3), Rowland Williams (Hwfa Môn), [1851], 1858 (ff. 3, 18 verso), William Williams (Caledfryn), 1852 (f. 5), William Rees (Gwilym Hiraethog), [1850s] (ff. 8, 55), Thomas Roberts (Scorpion), 1853 (f. 9), Michael D. Jones, [1857x1879] (f. 17), Henry Rees, 1863 (f. 50), Samuel Roberts (S.R.), 1867 (f. 54 verso), R. T. Evans, Oshkosh, Wisconsin, 1881 (f. 57 verso), Robert Parry (Robyn Ddu Eryri), 1880 (f. 98 verso), and many others including family members.
Among the works quoted are a Latin poem by George Herbert (f. 1 verso) and a Bengali version of John 3.16, 1885 (f. 75 verso). There are englynion in English by David Griffith (Clwydfardd) referring to a visit to the Great Exhibition, 1851 (f. 77). Also included are sketches of a dog, 1878 (f. 31), and of Abergele, 1866 (f. 67).

The majority of the poems were apparently copied from printed sources, including Blodeu-gerdd Cymry, selected by David Jones, Trefriw (Shrewsbury: Stafford Prys, 1759, Libri Walliae 2804) (ff. 22-34 verso) and numerous pamphlets. The volume also contains attempts by John Evans at composing an epitaph, in 1825 and 1830 (f. 44), and two versions of 'Cerdd yr Offeiriad Dur neu Steel Parson', possibly by John Evans, [1820s] (ff. 43, 46 recto-verso), with a typescript copy of both versions, [20 cent, second ½], [?by D. Tecwyn Lloyd], inserted loose in the volume (2 ff.). A sheet of arithmetical tables, sold by P. Sandford, Shrewsbury, [c. 1795], is pasted inside the front cover.

A copy, made about 1788 by Cadwalader Pugh, of the poetical works of Rhys Jones o'r Blaenau. Though it does not appear to have been made from the author's holograph collection (Mostyn MS. 163), it contains most of the items included therein.The latter portion of the book was used between 1836 and 1849 as a commonplace book and contains material taken from newspapers, including The Christian Advocate, The Weekly Dispatch, The Shropshire Conservative, The Sunday Times, and particularly The Carnarvon and Denbigh Herald. The longer poems include 'Ffarwel Caerludd' by R. D., 'Cerdd y Myglys' (anonymous), 'Hiraeth am Feirion' by Owen Thomas ('Twrog'), 'Carol Plygain' by O. Williams, 'Pennillion Serch' by John Jones ('Talhaiarn'), 'Can y Crys' by Edward Roberts ('Iorwerth Glan Aled'), and 'Meirion i mi' by William Roberts ('Gwilym Aran').

Miscellanea from the collection of Hugh Jones ('Erfyl'), consisting of poems by him and in his own hand, among them being 'Emyn y Tymmorau' translated from James Thomson's The Seasons and awarded a prize at the Tegeingl Eisteddfod, 1829, and 'Englynion i Fab ac Etifedd Syr W. W. Wynn, 1820, composed in a field near Wrexham; transcripts by 'Erfyl', including the 'Substance of a Sermon preached at the Baptist Chapel in Oswestry, on Sunday, August 13th, 1815. By the Revd. J. Palmer of Shrewsb[ur]y', a translation (copied at Whittington, 1814) of a petition to Governor [Warren] Hastings by the wife of Almas-ali-can 'who was seized upon and put to death for political purposes in India', and extracts from printed sources relating to Bangor, Tegeingl, etc.; a draft in the hand of Richard Llwyd, 'Bard of Snowdon', relating to the slave trade; a short-title list of Welsh periodicals ('Rhwydd Restr o Gyhoeddiadau Cym[r]aeg a Chymreig Amseriadol') in the hand of Robert Davies, Llansannan; and holograph poetry by Robert Ellis ('Cynddelw'), John Jones ('Myllin'), Thomas Edwards ('Caerfallwch'), and John Owen, Liverpool (1835) (awarded the prize at the Holywell Eisteddfod, 1834), etc.
