Letters to friends

The series comprises draft and incomplete letters from David Jones to friends and acquaintances, relating to his work as author and artist, as well as other disparate topics. The series also includes some draft letters to the press which are mixed within the same files.

Letters to the press

The series comprises draft and incomplete letters from David Jones to editors of newspapers, such as The Tablet, The Times, The Listener, and The Catholic Herald relating to history, literature, religion and other topics. The series also includes letters to friends and acquaintances, which are mixed within the same files.

Manuscript and typescript drafts

The series consists of manuscript and typescript drafts of some, but not all (18 of the 27) of the selected writings. There are multiple files relating to some of the articles. The series does not contain material relating to the following writings which form a part of the book: Autobiographical talk (See 'In illo tempore', Dying Gaul), Preface to In Parenthesis (See In Parenthesis), Welshness in Wales (See CF2/11), Welsh Wales, Preface to Anathemata (see Anathemata), Eclipse of a Hymn, Abstract Art, If and Perhaps and But, and Christopher Smart.

Material used

The series comprises material actually published in Dai Greatcoat, including copies of David Jones' letters, drafts and settings copies of the book, and related material.

'Notebook notes'

The series comprises manuscript notes by David Jones which Harman Grisewood refers to as the 'Notebook notes'. Although David Jones did not keep many research note books, these papers correspond to what they might have contained. They include sketches, notes, drafts of incomplete letters and texts (possibly of parts of In Parenthesis), Welsh and Latin words, historical dates, lists etc. A few pages are dated 1944, 1946, 1955, 1962, 1963, 1951, 1971. There is a coloured list of David Jones' medication in file 1 f.1, a note on an unused illustration to In Parenthesis in file 2 f. 1, and a coloured history 'map' in file 3, ff. 1-6.

Other literary papers

The series comprises other literary papers produced by David Jones, and papers relating to literary works by him. They include an article by David Jones about going to war, his reply on receiving the Hawthornden award, his speech in absentia when receiving his honorary degree from the University of Wales, Bangor, and a review by him of Rejoice in the Lamb. There are also papers relating to The Anathemata, 'Art and Democracy', The Sleeping Lord, Epoch and Artist, 'The Tutelar of the Place', The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, In Parenthesis, and 'A,a,a, Domine Deus'.

Proofs

The series comprises part of an early proof probably printed in 1936, twelve sets of proofs printed in 1937, and an unbound edition of the 1961 edition of In Parenthesis. The proofs were printed by Hague and Gill Limited, High Wycombe.
