Family papers and estate records, 1370-1941, of the Baker-Gabb family of The Chain, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, and their antecedents, mainly deeds and documents relating to lands in Monmouthshire and Herefordshire, mainly from the second half of the sixteenth century, when the Bakers first appear as stewards of the lordship of Abergavenny, including deeds relating to the town and castle of Abergavenny, the Priory of Abergavenny, and the Priory of Llanthony Prima; records of the following Monmouthshire manors: Cwmyoy, Llanthony, Stanton, Redcastle, Oldcastle, Triley, Abergavenny, Ewyas Lacy, Crickhowell, Hothneslade, and Newton or St Margaret's from 1632 onwards, including court books, perambulations and rentals; a breviary in the English style of the fourteenth-fifteenth century (NLW MS 16147A); papers relating to David Lewis, Catholic bishop of Llandaf, including his speech at the place of his execution, 1679; and diaries etc. of John Baker Gabb, private chamberlain to Pope Leo XIII, 1859-1892; a poll of burgesses of Monmouth, Newport and Usk, 1715, and material on the genealogy of the Baker Gabb family. -- Many of the letters and deeds belong to the solicitor's practice established by Thomas Gabb in 1760.

Papers of Bodfan, 1893-1935, comprising letters received by him, 1899-1935, mainly from friends discussing current literary trends and etymological and lexicographical matters; sermons, 1895-1901; miscellaneous poems, notes and printed matter, 1905-1933; and papers, mainly notebooks, relating to his brother Sir Edward Anwyl, 1893-1918.

The fonds consists of three groups of papers of the Campaign for the Protection of Rural Wales (CPRW), formerly the Council for the Preservation of Rural Wales, and the Council for the Protection of Rural Wales, the first dated 1928-1961, deposited in 1966, the second (papers of the Caernarfonshire branch) dated 1976-1986, deposited in 1986, both of which had been described in a separate, earlier schedule. Manuscripts once held in the library of Plas Llanstephan, Carmarthenshire. The collection comprises mainly transcripts from medieval Welsh manuscripts such as the Red Book of Hergest, the Black Book of Carmarthen and the Red Book of Talgarth which include poetry, triads, pedigrees, arms, lives of saints, Brut y Brenhinedd, Brut y Tywysogion, the Laws of Hywel Dda, etc.; grammars and vocabularies; translations, mainly from Latin and English sources; proverbs; theological tracts; medical recipes; etc. The earliest of the manuscripts date from the thirteenth to the fifteenth centuries. Most of the manuscripts are in the hands of Moses and Samuel Williams, with other scribes including Dr John Davies, Mallwyd, Dr John David Rhys, William Maurice, 'Iaco ab Dewi', Edward Lhuyd and William Owen-Pughe.
