A fine, but chipped impression in dark green wax, originally appended to a deed by green silk cords, of the seal of Gilbert de Clare, surnamed The Red, seventh Earl of Hertford, third Earl of Gloucester; he was married to Alice of Angoulême niece of the King of France, in 1257. He was a zealous adherent to the cause of the Barons, and knighted by Montfort, Earl of Leicester, at Lewes, where he commanded a division. Afterwards, however, he changed sides, and obtained a royal pardon. By his help, with that of others, he brought about the restoration of the King. Edward I was entertained by this Gilbert at Tonbridge Castle with great splendour. In 1289 he married Joane of Acre, daughter of Edward I. He died in 1295. A folded sheet endorsed 'Verses on Mrs Hoby's Journey to England' but bearing only memoranda, including a list of persons, e.g., Madam Hoby, Philip Williams, etc., who represented the characters in a [play?]. [Several county names in the list of characters, including Griffith Rice, the Dynevor ancestor who married Catherine Hoby and died in 1729, Thomas and Barbara Button, Charles and Sarah Matthews, etc. The Coal accounts on pp. 1 and 3 belong to 1684-85. Verses are referred to in the title, but they are missing. D.R.P.].

A further codicil to the last will and testament of Thomas Mansel Talbot of Penrice Castle, which was made on 18 Nov. 1805. (Copy).

Beginning: 'As I on my Jorney was coming from France / I hardd att Carmarthen a story by Chance ...'. [It is directed: 'For Mr Godwynne Herbartt, att Ty-yn-Ton, Glamorganshire'. This Godwin was one of those who signed the Neath articles for a cock-match, (A98). His daughter Mary married Edward Evans of Eaglesbush, Neath.].

Rent. 26s. 3d., etc. (b) Attached is a power of attorney by the same to Randolphe Purcell to deliver seisin. [English]. Dated: 12th April, 5 Edw. VI [1551]. Each document is signed by Res Manxell. Endorsed with a clause setting forth the delivery of seisin by the above, in the presence of Richard Pygge, Richard Gybbe, and Richard Howell. Dated: 16th Dec., 5 Edw. VI [1551]. Across the top of the indenture the following text is written, cut through by a wavy line: ‘Come [unto me al]l ye that labour and are heavy lad]en, and I shall [refres]he you.’ Indistinct seal, red wax (c.17mm).
