Arts Strategy for Swansea conference

Report on the Arts Strategy for Swansea conference which took place 28 March 2007 at the Liberty Stadium, Swansea, together with a bilingual leaflet titled A Policy for the Arts in Education for the City and County of Swansea. While the report suggests that Jen Wilson attended the conference, there is no indication that she gave a formal presentation.

Before Freedom

Material relating to a musical performance/workshop titled Before Freedom, which depicted the life of Willis, a freed slave who took up residence in Swansea, including school resource packs; completed student and teacher evaluation forms; posters and flyers; list of bookings; material relating to specific performance bookings; photographic prints; enquiry sheets; and application for grant aid to fund the project. The show, performed by members of Women in Jazz and others, toured schools, museums, theatres and other venues as part of the events commemorating the bicentenary of the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act of 1807.

The events marking Black History Month October 2006 coincided with celebrations to mark Women in Jazz's 20th anniversary, highlighted by a gala evening featuring Women in Jazz patron Dame Cleo Laine and a performance of Before Freedom - for which see Women in Jazz 20th Anniversary events. Bessie & Billie

Material relating to Bessie & Billie, a play in words and music performed by Joanne Bell and Cynthia Utterbach as part of Black History Month. The play, which re-enacted the lives and work of legendary jazz/blues singers Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday through the medium of dialogue and music, was first conceived as an improvised performance by Joanne Bell and Cynthia Utterbach in a Hamburg swing club. The parts of Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday were taken respectively by Bell and Utterbach.

Bicentenary of the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act 1807

Material relating to events marking the bicentenary of the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act of 1807, including details relating to individual events such as the multi-media performance Free at Last?; flyers; exhibition panel texts; calendar of events; enquiry sheets; correspondence; guide to resources produced by the Heritage Lottery Fund; and printouts from online sources relating to the history of slavery. Also including material relating to slavery and abolition not directly related to the bicentenary celebrations.

Black Environment Network Conference

Material relating to the BEN (Black Environment Network) Networking Conference held in Swansea, 4 June 2003, comprising conference schedule and booking form; list of delegates; correspondence and enquiry sheets; and brochures and information sheets relating to BEN projects and activities. It appears that Jen Wilson/Women in Jazz did not give a talk at this conference, being present as attendees only.

Black History Month

Material relating to Women in Jazz's participation in Black History Month, especially their involvement with Channel 4's Black History Map of Britain website, launched 1 October 2000 for Black History Month, including festival programme; press release; poster and flyer; exhibition texts; printouts and press cuttings; correspondence; and enquiry sheets. Together with material relating to Butetown History & Arts Centre's celebration of Black History Month 1999, 2001 and 2004, and postcards and press cutting relating to Butetown's mixed-race history.
