Title deeds of the Gogerddan estate, 1332-1930, mainly relating to properties in the north Cardiganshire parishes of Aberystwyth, Llanbadarn Fawr, Llanfihangel Genau’r-glyn and Llangynfelyn, and the townships of those parishes. The group contains a small number of deeds for properties in Machynlleth, Montgomeryshire, 1584-1862; and miscellaneous deeds of the Gogerddan estate and elsewhere in Cardiganshire, for which the provenance is more doubtful, 1476-1881. Some sixteenth century documents concern the lands once belonging to Gruffith ap Lle'n Vayne and Rice ap Griffith, attainted for high treason.
The deeds provide an overall view of the early acquisition of lands by John Pryse and Sir Richard Pryse from the sixteenth to early seventeenth centuries, and by Margaret Pryse of Woodstock, Oxfordshire, in the late eighteenth century. By the late nineteenth century the deeds record the sale by Sir Pryse Pryse and his trustees of portions of the settled estates, which by that date were heavily mortgaged. There is much scope for researching the land ownership of north Cardiganshire by the Crown and by prominent families, notably Pryse, Clement, Phellippe (Phillips) of Aberystwyth, Vaughan, Glais, Davies of Crigie, Pugh of Cwmsymlog, and Johnes of Abermarlais. Early deeds show the layout and development of Aberystwyth town, naming some local landmarks which still exist. The effects of the Genau’r-glyn enclosure acts are shown in the deeds for Llanfihangel Genau’r-glyn and Llangynfelyn from the first half of the nineteenth century.

Printed sale catalogues for portions of the Gogerddan estate and for other Cardiganshire estates in which Gogerddan may have had an interest, 1858-1923; and sale agreements, notices, schedules of property for sale, etc, 1813-1921. The properties were situated mainly in the parishes of Aberystwyth, Llanbadarn Fawr, Llanfihangel Genau’r-Glyn and Llangynfelyn.

Papers relating mainly to the Gogerddan hunt but also to a small number of other hunts in Wales and England. The Gogerddan group comprises personal hunting journals or diaries of several members of the Pryse family, 1836-1923, Gogerddan Hounds pedigree books, 1834-1899, and Gogerddan Hunt hound pack lists, accounts, etc., 1840-1935. The non-Gogerddan group, relates to other hunts in west Wales and the Cotwolds, and to various hunting associations, and comprises mainly hound pack lists, reports and year books, 1848-1910

Papers deriving from the foundation and early years of the Welsh National Agricultural Society, based at Cambrian Chambers in Aberystwyth, 1904-1910. They comprise several files of loose letters and papers accumulated by its first secretary, Lewes Pryse of Gogerddan, relating to the purpose and formation of the Society, and to the organisation of the national agricultural show; and printed schedules of the shows held initially at Aberystwyth, 1903-1909, then at Llanelli, 1910.

Records mainly of the lead, silver and copper mines belonging to the Gogerddan estate in North Cardiganshire, at Allt y Crib, Blaenceulan, Bronfloyd, Bryn yr Afr, the Bog, Camdwr Bach, Camdwr Mawr, Cwmsymlog, Darren, Eaglebrook, Esgair Hir, Esgair Fraith, Hafan and Henfwlch, the Island, Loveden Mine, South Darren, Taliesin and the Vaughan Mines, mainly in the parishes of Llanbadarn Fawr, Llanfihangel Genau’r-glyn and Llangynfelyn, Grogwynion in the parish of Llanafan and numerous other locations. These papers often incorporate records of the stone quarries at Hafan, Cwmere, Pentalwr, Penrhyngerwyn, Penglais and other sites. Records of the manor of Genau’r-glyn (Genaur-glyn) , Cardiganshire, belonging to the Pryse family of Gogerddan, who were lords of the manor. The main series comprise chief rentals, [1682]-1894; court leet presentments, 1721-1918; perambulations of the boundaries, 1857-1908; estreats, 1622-1820; affidavits and notices concerning wrecks, 1747-1882; and officers' papers such as appointments of officers, constables’ returns and notices to the bailiff to summon the court leet, 1752-1913. A further series contains assorted papers including a table of court fees, jury lists, a valuation, a constable’s list of estrays, and other documents relating to the administration and the title of the manor, 1729-1913.

Family and personal papers of various members of the Pryse family of Gogerddan, 1641-1952. They comprise royal appointments to the baronetcy and grants of the name of Pryse or Loveden, 1641-[late 19th cent.], genealogical papers, 1738-1928, sermon books from Cardiganshire and Berkshire parishes, 1747-1853, pocket books of Pryse Pryse, 1760-1803, 1821-1838, manusrctipt poetry and other literature, [1650x1950], printed books and pamphlets, 1714-1912, newspapers and cuttings, 1760-[1925], membership books and papers of various clubs and societies including the freemasons, [post-1804]-1925, Pryse family letters, 1697-1952, and miscellaneous Pryse family papers.1673-1674, 1828-1919. This section reflects the status of the Pryse family, their interests and family relationships. The pocket books of Pryse Pryse supplement the diaries which are listed as NLW Manuscripts (q.v.). The family letters reveal a deep concern over the deteriotating financial position of the estate, leading to a serious decline around the turn of the twentieth century.

Family deeds and documents of the Pryse family of Gogerddan, Woodstock and Buscot Park, comprising probate records, 1584-[19]16, and family deeds and settlements, 1549-1932. Papers deriving from trusts involving members of the Pryse family of Gogerddan, 1587-1950. These comprise trusts administered on behalf of the Pryse famliy and also trusts undertaken by the Pryses on behalf of others. The first series describes trusts involving various members of the Pryse family, 1587-1950, notably Sir Richard Pryse (d. 1623), and Richard Pryse (d. 1675) administrator of the estate of Lady Mary Vandyke in 1653; this series also includes two reports on the settled estates of Sir Pryse Pryse, 1888 and 1896, and later accounts to 1950. The second series concerns exclusively the administration and trust papers of Pryse Loveden who died intestate in 1855.

Papers relating to various railways in which the Pryse family of Gogerddan had an actual or speculative interest. There are two series, respectively relating to the Aberystwith and Welsh Coast Railway which ran through Gogerddan land, 1860-1867, and The Cambrian Railways Company, 1873-1899, followed by a single file of papers relating to miscellaneous railway companies in Wales and Shropshire, 1852-1900. The contents include letters, field books, particulars of the land taken for use of the railway, reports, accounts, official notices, two deeds, Acts of Parliament, maps and a list of employees of the Cambrian Railways Company in 1873.

Title deeds of houses and lands relating to the Mathafarn estate in the county of Merioneth, situated in the several parishes of Dolgellau, Llanelltud, etc., Llanfihangel-y-Pennant, Llanfor, Llangywer, Llanycil and Llanymawddwy, 1544-1704; the parish of Mallwyd, 1571-1701; and the parishes of Pennal and Tal-y-llyn, 1558-1629.

Family deeds and settlements of the Pughe family of Mathafarn, Montgomeryshire, and of individuals related to them by birth or by marriage, 1565-1742, and probate records, 1631-1718.

Papers deriving from the leasing and management of the coal mines in Pembrokeshire, held successively by the Lewes family of Abernantbychan, Lewis Pyrse of Woodstock, Edward Loveden Loveden of Buscot Park and their successors in the Pryse family of Gogerddan, 1745-1866. They comprise leases and lease agreements, 1745-1839, accounts, 1753-1866, letters, 1773-1866, and letters and papers relating to the dispute with Lord Milford over Moreton Colliery, 1773-1798. The contents refer mainly to Moreton Colliery in the parish of St Issells near Saundersfoot but also include records from Trevane, Picton Moor, Vadson and Hopshill. There are frequent references to Sir John Philipps of Picton Castle, his son, Sir Richard Philipps (Lord Milford), William Hopkins, Henry Phelps of Norchard, James Child of Begeli and others. Much information is revealed about the practical and economic aspects of coal mining in Pembrokeshire, the individuals involved, the transgressions by other proprietors and the ensuing legal disputes.
