Yad-dasht -Receipt. The sum of one Lac rupees owed by the Nawab for the upkeep of the Company's army during the month of Dhu al-Qa`dah has been received from Maharajah Ram Narayan and salaries of the army paid from this amount.

Copy of a letter sent on Jumada I 16th 1171 [i.e. 26 January 1758] in reply to a letter received from the East India Company. It was a great joy to have Colonel Clive Sabitjang Bahadur join with me in chasing Siraj al-Daulah, punishing him and then receiving the Diwani of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa. I consider Nawab Sabitjang Bahadaur who has bestowed gifts of a kind which are not available in this country as my own son. I regard our friendship with the Company with great satisfaction and pray for the wellbeing and strengthening of the power of the Company.

I have received your letter demanding one Lac rupees for the upkeep of your men. I have tried my best to comply with your demand but I am short of cash at present and have not been able to pay even my own sepoys since the month of Safar. I have been able to collect fifty thousand rupees which I have given to your agent to forward to you for the upkeep of your army. As you have suggested, I have taken the case of Raja Ram Narayan to Huzur and it has been agreed that he will award him a Khillat on Thursday. And after enquiring about your wishes from George Camp[?] he wants to come and see you. Meanwhile, I have received a bottle of very useful kushtah from an Indian Hakim. If you wish I will be glad to send you this bottle to you. -- Another, contemporary translation of the contents is CR8/1, entry no. 408.

Thank you for your letter informing that until the case of my tax payment is settled I should send five Lac rupees to the treasury. I regard your happiness above all other consideration and will send you the required amount. However, I consider the sum of five Lacs more than sufficient to satisfy my tax demands and I would not owe any more amounts. As I am completely alone at present, I cannot return you the parvanah myself. I am sending it through Rajah Ram Narayan and hope it will reach you safely soon. -- Another, contemporary translation of the contents is CR8/1, entry no. 455.

Refers at the start to spending time in the garden of Mir Jafar, and ends with greetings to William Watts and a Mr Daley or Waley. The enclosure refers to problems with Ramnarayan.

News report from the Camp of the Prince [Ali Gauhar/Shah Alam II]. dated Sha'ban 9th, reg.yr. 5 [17 April 17 1758]. Early in the morning the Prince got up, washed himself and then went into the prayer room to perform his prayers. After four gharis of the day had passed he went into Tasbih Khanah where he was received by the Chief Butler, Rajah Ram Nath, Ali Akbar Khan, Hidayat Ali Khan, Bahadur Ali Khan and Riza Quli Khan. At yakpas he held a private meeting with the Chief Butler, Bahadur Ali Khan, Riza Quli Khan and Hidayat Khan. Later harkarahs brought news that the English would be entering the Jafar Khan Bagh soon and that the army of Nasir al-Mulk was encamped near the borders of Nikuthapore. The English army which was in the fort at Azimabad was also coming to join them in Jafar Bagh. After hearing this news the Prince summoned Madar al-Daulah, Muhammad Quli Khan, Ahya Khan, Naubat Khan and consulted with them for two gharis. He wrote a parvanah and at once sent a camel rider to deliver it to Nawab Shuja al-Daulah Bahadur. Later he called the harkarahs and interviewed them. At this time, Mirza Husain Beg and the French Monsiur Lally arrived there. The news of their arrival was conveyed to the Prince by Khvajah Bahadur Ali Khan. He went into his chamber with Ram Nath, Bahadur Ali Khan, Hidayat Ali Khan and Ali Akbar Khan and then called the above mentioned two persons in to his chamber to confer with them. Later, after lunch was served he went to his chamber to rest and pray. When four gharis of the day remained, he came to Divan Khanah where Khvajah Bahadur Ali Khan came to see him. He was followed by Ali Akbar Khan. Later he asked Ali Akbar Khan and Hidayat Khan to return to their residences. -- On the 10th of Sha'ban, reg.yr. 5 the army of the Prince marched from Muhab Alipore and entered Arval and the artillery came to Daudnagar. The day the Prince marched from Phulwari there was not a single harakara belonging to Nasir al-Mulk present in the camp. That is why we have not received any report of that day.

I was sad to have received your letter informing that you were not well but glad to know that you have now fully recovered. Kindly keep me informed about your health and welbeing.

As there was no seal of the Nawab Sahib on the envelope it is requested that it should be affixed on the back of the parvanah and returned. -- The pargana of Malda and the value of the properties in Basumukh belonging to the jagir of Nawab Samsam al-Daulah Bahadur Mansur Jang, which as cultivated lands were under the administration of officials, a price of these properties was agreed with the owner of the jagir as the Nawab Wazir has written on this subject.They should withdraw the administrators from the jagir of the Nawab and they should be handed over to Rao Shitab Rae, Assistant Divan of Bihar Province and the properties in districts of Balanj[?] etc., belonging to the aforesaid Nawab. -- Another, contemporary translation of the contents is CR8/1, entry no. 501.

Refers to entry no. 518 in CR8/1. I have not received any communication since your last visit here. I had sent letters of Maharajah Sahib, Jagat Seth Sahib and Maharajah Sarupchand Sahib, along with my report on 25th Ramadan, reg.yr. 5. I will be grateful if you could send their replies so that I can pass them on to the above-mentioned persons. Maharajah Sahib had written to you and Amir Beg Khan regarding the return of papers and staff of the districts of Hoogli and Panjali[?]. I hope you will be able to reply to them soon.

Thank you very much for your letter informing that you were going by high-speed coaches to the border areas of the province to subdue some of the zamindars there and that you have arrived at Manz/ Manar[?]Thursday and that you will be reaching Sarodha soon. With the grace of God you will achieve victory soon. Because of this news Nawab Nasir al-Mulk Bahadur [i.e. Miran] has decided to wait here today. I, too, am longing to join you but it is necessary that I too wait here

Received your letter and read its contents. I have passed the enclosed note to the person concerned. I will send you his reply as soon as I receive one. Please do let us know the news of your good health and welfare

I have not received any news from you since long. Please let me know about your wellbeing.

I would like to bring to your notice the following two cases. -- The first one concerns the parvanah received from the Nawab Vazir al-Mumalik in reply to your request for the grant of appropriate honours and titles to you and the second is about your annoyance at the troubles created by Genda Mall and the bad intentions of Ranjit Rae. As you very well know, I do not have the resources or power to resolve these issues but you will be pleased to know that I have now received documents relating to the grant of honours and status duly signed and sealed by the Qazi. As far as the cases of Genda Mall and Ranjit Rai are concerned, both have been exiled from their territories [see entry no 500 in CR8/1]. In addition, I can assure you that you will soon receive a firman from His Majesty, along with original documents relating to your awards.--Another, contemporary translation of the contents is CR8.1, entry no. 526.

In your recent letter you informed me that you have not received the letter of the Nawab Vazir along with testimonials of honours and high office. Secondly, he has also not given his views on the case of Genda Mall. Jagat Seth Sahib and Maharajah Sahib had also promised that they will make sure that you receive the testimonials of honours and grant of land and office within one month. As a consequence of this, testimonials with their copies attested by Qazi were received by us from his Majesty. Our enemies were no doubt disappointed when Jagat Seth Sahib and the Maharajah Sahib sent the kharita containing the reply from the Nawab Wazir and copies of the testimonials attested by Qazi to you. At the same time Genda Mall and Najib Rai were exiled from the city. --- I will appreciate if you acknowledge the receipt of these testimonials after you have had them examined by your judges.
