Letter from ?,$f1758, July 27.

The summary of the letters received from Rajah Ram Prashad by Jagat Seth Sahib and Maharajah Sahib is that Nawab Sabit Jang Bahadur [Lord Clive] has sent a petition to His Majesty and the Nawab Wazir through Rajah Shitab Rai who has in turn asked Rajah Daler Singh to present it in the court. Rajah Daler Singh brought the contents of this petition to the notice of Nawab Wazir. The Nawab Wazir remarked that how is it that Jagat Seth Sahib and Rajah Shitab Rai have sent this petition to him [Daler Singh] without informing him first. The Nawab Wazir at once asked Daler Singh to bring the contents of this petition to the notice of Rajah Ram Prashad who was summoned to the court and given this petition to read. He replied that he should consult the writer of this report. Afterwards Rajah Daler Singh went with the Nawab Wazir to meet Malhar Rao and Raghu Nath Rao in their army camps. Whatever happens there I will send you a copy. -- After two days Rajah Ram Prashad went to the house of Maharajah Thakur Mall. The Maharajah enquired whether there was a complete understanding between the English, Jagat Seth Sahib and the Maharajah Sahib. Rajah Ram Prashad replied that he had earlier received a petition of Lord Clive from Jagat Seth Sahib and Maharajah Sahib, which he had submitted to the Nawab Wazir but he was not aware that he [Clive] could send this petition directly to him. The Maharajh replied that it was not an important matter as he always consulted Jagat Seth Sahib and Maharajah Sahib in these matters and the Nawab Wazir also had full trust in both.

Letter from Nandakumara,$f1758, July 27 /$cNandakumara, Maharaja.

The Vakil of the Governor of Bengal, Rajah Ram Prashad, wrote a letter from Shajahanabad on Tuesday, 11 Dhu al-Qa`dah, reg.yr 5 [i.e. 6 July 1759] which was delivered to the house of Jagat Seth Mahtab Rai and Maharajah Sarup Chand. After reading this letter both these men consulted with Reva Das Jiv. As I have very close relations with the latter, I was able to see this letter and make a close study of its contents. There were a number of things mentioned about you and the province of Bengal. A summary of these is being sent to you. It is rumoured that His Majesty will soon march towards Bengal but no date has yet been fixed. As soon as a date is decided I will inform you immediately. If you want me to come and see you earlier please let me know so that I could do so. On 11th of this month Gori Prashad Rae, son of Beni Prashad Rae, Rani Bhavani, a zamindar of Rajshahi were honoured by His Majesty with Khillat, etc. -- Jagat Seth has handed over his reply to your letter to me. This is being sent under separate cover. -- Another, contemporary translation of the contents is CC2/1, entry no. 30.

Letter from Nandakumara,$f1758, July 26 /$cNandakumara, Maharaja.

Rajah Dulabha Ram Bahadur is very unhappy and worried man nowadays and has written to Mr Scrafton as well as to you about his difficulties. He has no one else to turn to except yourself and I hope you will be able to consider his request for help with kindness and reply to him accordingly. Another, contemporary translation is CC2/1, entry no. 33.

Letter from Durlabhram,$f1758, July 26 /$cDurlabhram Mahindra, Raja Diwan of Bengal.

I have already written to you giving you news of this place. Whatever information I gather from here I send full details of this to Mr Scrafton and to Nand Kumar. Although in my mind I am quite satisfied about his intentions but the facts, which I have already sent you, tell a very different story. For this reason it is necessary that we confirm and evaluate whatever is received from him [most probably it refers to the intrigues of Nand Kumar]. Another, contemporary translation of the contents is CC2/1, entry no. 34.

Letter from Nandakumara,$f1758, July 22 /$cNandakumara, Maharaja.

Ganga Ram came to see Rajah Rajballabha Sahib and told him that Bishnu Charan Bose, son of late Ram Nath, owes him money, household utensils, clothes, etc., which he had left with him on trust. It is therefore requested that you may order your employees to call Bishnu Charan before them and recover the money, utensils and clothes, etc., from him.

Letter from Nandakumara,$f1758, July 20 /$cNandakumara, Maharaja.

On Tuesday, 11 Dhu al-Qa`dah, Raja Raj Ballabh Sahib was given the post of Diwani of Nawab Nasir al-Mulk Mir Muhammad Sadiq Khan Bahadur, along with the grant of a robe of honour/Khillat-I fakhirah, decorated head dress, elephants, etc. You may have read this report in my previous letter also. It will be appropriate if you could respond by sending your congratulations to him. The Rajah has made clear to me through his nephew that he has accepted this post on the condition that, (1) he will have the approval of Nawab Sabit Jang [Clive] who had already mentioned this to him (2) the approval of Nawab Nasir al-Mulk Bahadur himself so that it would not create any ill feelings between Nawab Sabit Jang Bahadur and Nawab Nasir al-Mulk Bahadur. I will be grateful if you could send us your views on this matter.

Letter from Tilok Chand's family,$f[1758, late July] /$cTilok Chand.

States that Rani Burdwan, Tilok Chand's grandmother, lapsed into the pangs of death on the 30th of the Bangla month of As [.e. 22 July]by the banks of the Katak. Shortly thereafter 2 or 3 people saw a star, and some said that she had in truth given up the ghost. Letter from Murli Dhar,$f1758, June 22 /$cMurli Dhar.

I sent you a letter through the Peshkar but have not received any reply. I hope you have received this letter. We are all praying here day and night for your welbeing. I was hoping that you would write to me when you arrive at Murshidabad but now we hear that you and the Nawab were going to Calcutta instead. I hope you will write to me from there. -- Earlier I had sent news reports from Shahjahanabad and from the court of Shuja al-Daulah. At present, I have no further news about the army of Shuja al-Daulah. The latest news about him is that he has gone to Jaunpore to settle matters between Benares and Jaunpore. Therefore, Rajah Balvind Singh has provided a bank draft of one Lac rupees and has promised to pay a further two Lacs. The Nawab after leaving Jaunpore marched towards the northeast to a place called Karakat, which is at a distance of seven Karohs from Jaunpore. From here he is going to Ghazipore. He has refused to accept fifty thousand rupees which were brought in by the vakil of Nawab Fazl Ali Khan. The Marhatta army, which had reached Lahore, is retuning to Shajahanabad. Their forward column has reached Sirhind and Nawab Ghazi al-Din Khan who did not agree with the Prince is staying in the mansion of Ali Mardan Khan.
