Tithe, chief and fee farm rentals

This collection comprises the following: (i) Wynnstay fee farm rents, comprising property in p's Wrexham, Ruabon, Erbistock, Llangollen, Llandisilio-yn-Iâl, Llanarmon-yn-Iâl, Llansanffraid Glyn Ceiriog, Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant. Erbistock is omitted from 1880, Llansanffraid from 1888, and Llanarmon from 1917. Wynnstay fee farm rents, 1860-1898, are also contained in the series of general rentals. (Ii) Ruthin fee farm rents, comprising property in p's Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd, Llanrhaiadr yng Nghinmeirch, Denbigh, Llangwm, and Ruthin. Llanfair is omitted from 1877, and Llanrhaiadr from 1880. Ruthin fee farm rents up to 1898 are also contained in the series of general rentals. (iii) Cynllaith Owain chief rents, comprising property in p. Llansilin (t's Lloran, Moelfre, Estynallan, Priddbwll, Sycharth, Rhiwlas). Estynallan and Sycharth are omitted from 1880, Moelfre from 1886, Rhiwlas from 1889, and Priddbwll from 1915. Cynllaith Owen chief rents, 1808-1896, are also contained in the series of general rentals, and also in the Llangedwyn estate rentals. (iv) Arwystli chief rents, comprising property in p's Llandinam, Llanidloes forming the Berthlwyd estate, and property in p's Penystrywaid, Llandinam (t's Maes-mawr, Llandinam, Trewyddan, Carnedd, Gwerneirin, Hengynwydd, Deddenydd), Carno, Llanwnnog (t's Uwchlaw'r-coed, Surnant, Esgob, Wig, Ystradfaelog, Caer-sws), Trefeglwys (t's Esgeiredd, Bodaeoch, Maestregymer, Dolgwden, Glyntrefnant), Llanidloes (t's Manledd, Brithdir, Glynhafren Iscoed, Ystradhunod, Cefncroesllwybr, Morfodion, Treflyn, Rhydfaes), town of Llanidloes, p. Llangurig (up to 1898) are also contained in the series of general rentals. (vii) Llanidloes parish tithes, comprising property in t's Brithdir, Cilmachallt, Hengynwydd, Treflyn. Tithes for p. Llanidloes (up to 1898) are also contained in the series of general rentals. (viii) Trefeglwys parish tithes, comprising property in t's Glyntrefnant and Esgeiredd, together with p. Llanbryn-mair. Tithes for p. Trefeglwys (up to 1898) are also contained in the series of general rentals. From 1866 (RB4) the Glan-llyn chief rents, collected at Michaelmas, are added, comprising property in p's Llanfor, Llanuwchllyn, Trawsfynydd, Llangywer, Llanycil, Llandrillo-yn-Edeirnion, Llanfihangel-y-traethau, and boats on Bala Lake. Boats on Bala Lake are omitted from 1874, property in Trawsfynydd and Llanfihangel-y-traethau are omitted from 1880, and in Llangywer from 1914. Glan-llyn chief rents up to 1898 are also contained in the series of general rentals. From 1890-1892 (RB14) Plas Madoc tithes, collected on 1 Jan., are added, comprising property in p. Ruabon (t. Cristionydd Cynrig). From RB17 (1899-1901) to RB21 (1911-13) the Cynllaith Owain chief rents are omitted. With regard to the covering dates in this series, the fee farm and chief rents were collected at Michaelmas and the tithes were collected on 1 Jan. The rental dated, for example 1893-1895, includes collection sheets for chief rents due Michaelmas 1892-1894 and tithe rents due 1 Jan. 1893-1895.

Tithe rentals, co. Mont.

Tithe rents in p. Llangurig (t's Cefn (yr) hafodau, Glyngynwydd, Glynhafren, Glynbrochan, Llanifyny, Llaniwaered), p. Llanidloes (t's Cilmachallt, Brithdir, Treflyn), p. Trefeglwys (t's Esgeiredd, Glyntrefnant, Dolgwden, Faerdref), and p. Llanfair Caereinion (t's Rhosaflo, Brynelen, Cil-yr-ych, Rhiwhiriarth, Llanloddian, Bryn-glas, Dol-ged, Llanfair, Gwenynog and Pen-tyrch), all in co. Mont. With regard to the dates in this series, R47/3, for example, would contain a rental for the year 1779 (not necessarily collected in 1779). Collectors: Edward Devereux 1780, 1783-4. R51/3 (1787) contains a rental of Llanfair Caereinion tithe corn for 1787, while the remaining rentals only contain the tithes for p's Llangurig, Llanidloes and Trefeglwys. After R63/16 (1807), the tithes for p's Llangurig, Llanidloes and Trefeglwys are contained in the Arwystli collection, while rentals of p. Llanfair Caereinion tithes are contained in a separate collection.

Tithe apportionments and other tithe papers, Wynnstay and Vale of Clwyd,

Papers deriving from the ownership and apportionment of tithes concerning the Wynnstay and Vale of Clwyd estate, comprising lists of tithes in the Manor of Valle Crucis, Wrexham, Stansty, etc., [pre-1719]; a tithe apportionment for Llangollen, 1841; tithe apportionment for Erbistock, 1843; tithe apportionment for Erlas, Gresford, (Watermark 1849); table and list of tithe rent charge, Plas Issa and Tatham farms, Ruabon, (Watermark 1859)-1873; and particulars of tithe rent charges due to the owners of Plas Madoc, 1890.

Stray bonds,

Bonds, recognizances in the nature of a statute merchant or statute staple, etc. separated from other documents with which they once belonged. They relate mainly to payments of debts, appearances in court, covenants in title deeds or obedience to arbitration awards. A large proportion of them concerns the Thelwall family of Plas y Ward. They are listed as "a bundle of old bonds", 1489-1669; miscellaneous bonds, 1518-1613; bonds for payment, recognizances, etc., 1520-1682; a parcel of "old bonds", 1554-1687; bonds for performance of covenants, 1614-1698; bonds of Sir Richard Wynn and Sir John Wynn of Gwydir, 1619-1638. and bonds for payments for Caernarfonshire rectories, 1624-1631.

Stanwardine collection

Property in Stanwardine, [p. Baschurch], co. Shrop., and p. Holt, co. Denb. From R10/1 (1707) onwards, property in p's Wrexham and Broughton is added; from R10/9 (1712) onwards, property in p. Is-y-Coed, previously contained in the Wynnstay Home Rents Collection, is also added. R9/6a and R9/6b contain property in Holt only. Collectors: Thomas Hanmer (1707-1709), Allen Pidgeon (1735), Randle Jones (1736-1746 and 1772), and Thomas Jones (1748-1770). For the continuation of this collection post 1772, see Collection II.

St Martin’s (Weston Rhyn), title deeds,

Title deeds for properties in the township of Weston Rhyn and parish of St Martin’s. Many of the deeds relate to the Trehowell estate of Richard ap Robert, which was sold to Watkin Kyffin of Glascoed in 1656. The files describe Cae Meddyg, Mays Weston, etc., 1456-1597; Tir y Maip, Mays Weston, Bryn Coch, etc., 1601-1613; Gwerglodd Sarne y Cwtta, Gweirglodd y Kay Newydd, etc., 1619-1640; purchase of Trehowell by Watkin Kyffin, 1647-1663; Morton, 1648-1701; and a messuage in Trehowel and Erwe, 1767-1809.

Somerset deeds,

Two mediaeval deeds concerning lands in Wick, Carswell and Wroxhale [Wraxhall] in Somerset. The first [late 12 x early 13 cent] is a grant by the Beket family pertaining to land at Wick, containing specific boundary clauses and details of the payment made partly in money and partly in high-status goods. The second, a quitclaim dated 1307, may be part of a settlement involving families located ‘atte Wike’ and Clopton, relating to lands at Carswell and Wroxhale [Wraxhall].

Title deeds relating to properties in Shropshire. The files describe the parishes and/or manors of Acton Scott – Colemere, 1723-1809; Condover, 1697-1742; Cound – Lydbury North, [pre-1290], 1418, 1460, 1620-1787; Meole Brace, 1592-1772; Moreton Corbett and Newport, 1719, 1763; Pontesbury and Westbury (Cruckton, Horton, Oldbury, Yockleston, etc.), 1612-1768; Pulverbatch –Selatyn, 1692-1734; Stretton in the Dale, 1728-1807; Tong – Wollerton, 1605-1824; Worthen and Trelystan, 1562-1771; Wroxeter, 1588; Yockleton and Stretton, 1636-1742; and miscellaneous Shropshire deeds, 1715-1740.

Shrewsbury title deeds,

Title deeds for properties in the town and parish of Shrewsbury, in Castle Foregate, Meryvans Street, Corvisers’ Row, High Street, 1564-1680; St Chad, 1564-1778; Frankwell, 1578-1727; Whitley Hall, Benthall and Allesley estates, 1583-1773; Barker Street and Knockin Street, 1597-1674; Clarimond Hill, 1602, 1762; Fish Street alias Milk Street, 1603-1792; miscellaneous properties in Shrewsbury, 1604-1791; Coleham, Sturreyes Close, Abbey Foregate, etc., 1618-1692; a shop in High Street and stable in Rowshill Lane, 1629-1761; properties of the Nicolls family in St Mary and St Chad, 1634-1745; Abbey Foregate, 1730-1744; shops adjoining the guild hall, St Chad, 1748-1755; and Wyle Cop, 1762-1767. The deeds are highly informative for street names, inhabitants and buildings which have since been altered or demolished. Some of the deeds, at least, may have derived from the Purcell estate or the Mytton estate (see Wynnstay rental RA38).

Settled Land Acts estate improvement applications

Papers relating to applications between 1887 and 1905 by Sir Herbert Lloyd Watkin Williams Wynn, Lady Louise Alexandra Williams Wynn and the trustees of the Wynnstay settlement of 1884, under the provisions of the Settled Land Acts, 1882-1890, for improvements on the Glan-llyn estate in the parish of Llanuwchllyn, Merioneth, Llwynymaen and Llanforda near Oswestry, Salop, the Llangedwyn estate in Llansilin, Llangedwyn, Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant and Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog, Denbighshire, the Llanbryn-mair and Cyfeiliog estate, Montgomeryshire, and parts of the main Wynnstay estate in Bangor Is-coed and Wrexham. Typically the file contents comprise official application forms for the approval by the Board of Agriculture of a surveyor or engineer nominated by the Wynnstay trustees, orders issued by the High Court of Justice Chancery Division, building estimates, specifications, surveyors’ reports and certificates, accounts, agents’ receipts and relevant correspondence. Some files contain plans and elevations.

Schedules and abstracts of deeds,

Volumes containing original schedules of deeds compiled by the estate in 1710-1822, 1740-1789, 1770, and 1817, together with loose schedules and abstracts of deeds, [early 17th cent]-[c. 1910]. The original volumes list family settlements, wills and title deeds for estates gained though inheritance, marriage or purchase, although the order of the contents changes according to the cataloguing system adopted by the estate at the time. The total date range of deeds described in these schedules covers 1185-1910.

Ruabon title deeds,

Title deeds relating to properties in the parish of Ruabon, namely Llwyn [?], Tyddyn yn y Kevyn, etc., Cristionydd Cynrig, 1435-1511; miscellaneous properties in Ruabon, 1465-1621; miscellaneous properties in Dinhinlle, 1518-1621, 1691-1794; Ty yn Pen yr Allt and Cae Howell Voyle, etc., Morton Wallicorum, 1624-1812; miscellaneous properties in Ruabon, 1641-1859; lands of Edward ap David, Cristionydd Cynrig, 1655-1667; Bryn Llywenydd, Dinhinlle Isaf, 1679-[c.1775]; a smithy conversion, Ruabon, 1707-1754; Plas Kynaston estate, 1711-1851; miscellaneous properties in Cristionydd Cynrig, 1718-1815; messuages and two meadows, Ruabon, 1723-1787; Belan, 1727-1755; Trefechan, Dinhinlle and Cristionydd Cynrig, Cefn y Fedw and Hafod, 1728-1858; and Bodylltyn leases, 1779-1782. Some of the properties belonged to the Watstay estate of the Eyton family and Sir John Wynn, but several more were acquired in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to expand the Wynnstay home estate.

Rhuddlan and St Asaph and misc. Flintshire deeds,

Title deeds relating to properties in the parishes of Rhuddlan, and St Asaph, in files entitled the township of Faenol in Rhuddlan and St Asaph, 1687-1715; the Dean’s house, St Asaph, 1651; and miscellaneous Flintshire deeds, 1600-1652.

Rhiwgoch estate and other properties in co's Mer. and Denb.

This series of rentals combines: (1) property on the Rhiwgoch estate, acquired by Henry Wynn through his marriage with Catherine, heiress of Ellis Lloyd of Rhiwgoch, namely property in p's Trawsfynydd, Dolgellau, [Llanddwywe] (t. Is-y-graig) and Llanfair-juxta-Harlech, co. Mer.; and (2) property which had formed part of the Wynn estate in cos Mer. and Denb., namely property in p. Llandderfel in Penllyn hundred, and p's Llandrillo-yn-Edeirnion, Corwen (Ddwyryd) and Betws in Edeirnion hundred, all co. Mer., and p. Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr (t. Llysan), co. Denb. R7 (1669-1673) contains property in Trawsfynydd, Dolgellau, Llanfair-juxta-Harlech, and Abermouth only. From L1301/5 (1688) to R9/6e (1701), only property in Corwen (Ddwyryd), Betws, Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr (t. Llysan), Llanfor and Llandrillo is included, except for R8/6 (1680) which only includes property in Llanfor and Llandrillo. Collectors: Evan Lloyd 1669-73, Griffith Roberts 1707-1718, Randle Jones 1725-1751, John Evans 1728, Thomas Jones 1752-1772. From R11/8 (1707) the Rhiwgoch estate is resumed. R17/16 (1728) omits p. Llandderfel and t. Llysan. From R30/9 (1751) onwards property in p's Llanfair-juxta-Harlech and Llandderfel are omitted. For the continuation of this collection, post 1772, see Collection I.

'Rents for sporting'

The collection comprises lands in the manors of Cyfeiliog and Arwystli, and in p. Trawsfynydd, co. Mer. Lands in p. Llangurig, co. Mont., are mentioned from 1886 (R141/1c) onwards. Lands in p. Llangywer, co. Mer., mentioned from 1892 (R147/1c) onwards. Lands in p's Llangollen, Llandegla, Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd, Ruthin, and Llandysilio [yn-Iâl], co. Denb., and in p. Llanbryn-mair, co. Mont., and part of the Llwydiarth estate, contained in one or more of the volumes from 1894 (R149) onwards. Collector: Owen Hughes, 1874-1880. 'Rental, freehold property'

A single, separate volume containing a rental which includes tenants from the following places: p's Wrexham, Ruabon, Llangollen, Erbistock, Gwersyllt, Marchwiail, Bryneglwys, Holt, Llandysilio[-yn-Iâl] and Llanarmon [-yn-Iâl], co.
